8-30-07 MMS Karting Hits Jackpot in Reno IKF

MMS Karting went to the IKF region 11 race in Reno with high hopes in bringing the new Engine Shop victories. MMS got just that as 7 drivers from the MMS Karting tent came home with first place trophies.

Austin DeMent took his MMS tuned Birel to victory twice. Capturing pole, heat race and Main event wins in both HPV-1 and Jr Comer classes. Glenn McKinnon also got a big victory in 125 cc National Cup Masters with his Doug Sharp built and tuned Iame Leopard.

Also winning with the Iame Leopard was Mike Botelho jr. Botelho got the lead halfway in the highly competitive National Cup Sr class and rode to victory, while David Brant also drove the Doug Sharp Iame setup to victory in the TAG Jr class. Lastly, in the Formula 80 Sr Mark Nason drove to a big victory over the younger kids while also putting in a dominant run in the Formula 80 Masters class.

As the season whines down MMS Karting gets ready for next year while winning races in the 2007 season.

8-29-07 IKF Region 11 Race #6 Day 2

After Day 1 of Racing, the teams conveyed toward the middle of the pit at the Scribner Motorsports tent as Norcalkarters.com was handing out free margarita's to anyone with a wrist band. As the night settled down things became quiet as the teams were preparing for day 2.

HPV-1 took to the track first and local MMS driver Austin DeMent picked up where he left off by grabbing pole position with a qualifying time of 53.079. DeMent would cruise to an easy victory as Bordogna's Jonny Norris broke a throttle cable. Norris had to start from the back in the Final as Bordogna's other Jr 1 Driver Justin Cole grabbed the lead early. As Norris came through the pack he heated up his tires and DeMent was just coming in and got his second win Sticker of the weekend. Norris and Cole were in tow, as Joseph Keaton and Ian Fryer were the top five.

National Cup Masters was up next and another local MMS driver Glenn McKinnon grabbed pole with a 49.800. Steve Slacks got the early lead in the Heat, but Mckinnon  was to tough and got the win. Glenn got the victory in the Final as well as he was never challenged. Slacks was second, Emmick's Lance Grimm, Wayne Lorenz and Carol Brown the top five.

The HPV-2 Jr was next on the track and 8x National Champion Dylan Albiani came to play once again grabbing fast time with a 50.378. Albiani once again ran ahead of the field. Dylan got easy wins in both the heat and the main winning by 5.372 seconds in the Final. Cambrian's David Vasquez was second, Kartworld's Kiel Spaulding, MMI's Kelsey Nilsson, and Ryan Garcia finished fifth. The same story was with Sr Superbox with Bryan Stephenson. Stephenson went wire to wire for the victory with Emmick's Jesse Gwin earning a hard fought second.

In Formula 80 masters Steve Dow grabbed pole in qualifying with a 49.630. In the heat Mark Nason again went to the front as he did the previous day. In the Final Nason checked out early leaving the fight for second between Dow and Gerry Williams. Dow got the position leaving Williams with third. Emmick;s Tony Rodriguez was fourth and Jay Neely fifth.

Jr TAG was up next and MMS driver David Brant qualified pole with 48.692. Brant would get an early lead in the heat but would get the black for a loose side pod. This setup a fight between Cody Kay and Tyler Bradstock, as Bradstock would gap Kay for the pole in the Final. Brant would start last and get the lead early as Bradstock would stay close. A few times Bradstock attempted to mount a challenge but would come up unsuccessful. Brant would go on to victory with Bradstock second. Chelsi Wagner would finish third as Cody Kay was fourth.

Last up for the day was the 100cc National Cup. Corse Kart's Nic Leduc got pole with a 50.151. NorcalKarters.com Chris Scribner would get the early lead but would fade as Corse Kart's Cody Hodgson would get the victory. On the Start of the final, Corse Kart team drivers Leduc and Hodgson would get together ending Leducs day and putting Hodgson at the rear of the field. Scribner led from the get go but Hodgson ran him down for a last lap battle. Scribner held the protective line throughout the last lap. Scribner and Hodgson would get together down the side stretch and then again racing to the line. Scribner got the victory and Hodgson was second. Fastechs Travis Duhn was third with Kevin Knight and Nic Leduc the top five.

Next race is hosted by Kinsmen Kart Club in Dixon for round seven September 29-30 before the series heads to Atwater for the Finale.

8-28-07 IKF Region 11 Race #6 Day 1

The Jim Russell IKF Region 11 norcal series sponsored by Bridgestone was heating up in Reno at Desert Park Raceway for the sixth race out of eight for the season. Action was Hot Hot starting on Friday as practice began. Points battles were heated from Stockton. Friday the weather was clear, sunny and hot, but Saturday things really began to heat up.

The first class on the track was Jr. Comer and MMS Karting Austin DeMent grabbed the pole position with a 54.909. On the start Bordogna's Jonny Norris grabbed the point and took control. But local, Austin DeMent, took away the lead as the race went on and once again would start pole. The main was the same song. Norris again got the jump, but DeMent had the setup and as the race went on DeMent took control and rode to victory. Norris was second, Ian Fryer, Joseph Keaton and Brody Zink round the top five.

125 National Cup was up next. NorcalKarters.com Chris Scribner took pole with a 48.669. In the heat Scribner went to the point on the start and rolled to an easy victory. In the main, Scribner again went to the point but with MMS Karting Mike Botelho pressuring. Scribner looped it in turn one after learning later of Brake issues, and Botelho cruised to the victory for the second year in row at Reno earning some valuable points. Corsa Kart Nic Leduc and MMS Karting Zachary Dericco and Corsa Kart Cody Hodgson, Scribner fell to ninth but recovered to fifth.

Formula 80 limited took to the track next as Fastech Travis Duhn grabbed the pole with a 48.740. An interesting heat race gave Kevin Tannaka the win setting up a great race between the top five in the main. Local Mark Nason grabbed the lead early and cruised to victory as MMI Trevor Schmid rode in second. Cody McKinney held on for third while Kevin Tannaka and Travis Duhn came home fifth.

Next up was the HPV-4 Jr. class as local Cody Kay grabbed the pole with a 50.842. MMI Kelsey Nilsson got the Heat win. In the main a bad start ended up as a bad first turn. Trackmagic Brett Felkins and Kelsey Nilsson got together ending Felkins day and making Kays as he cruised to an easy victory. Kelsey Nilsson was second, Wyatt Nilsson, Janna Spear and Felkins for the top five.

Sr. Superbox Heavy was up and the man of the season has been Fastech Bryan Stephenson. Stephenson continued his dominance while sweeping qualifying pole, Heat race and Final wins. Paul Carter won World Formula as Tyler Agan won Animal. Trevor Agan won Jr. 2 Animal.

Last up was Jr. Superbox. Region 7 pro and 8x National Champion Dylan Albiani got pole with a 51.894. Dylan went on to win both heat and final in an easy fashion with a lead in an 8.8 second dominance.  MMS Karting David Brant, Cody Kay, Cambrian David Vasquez, and Ryan Garcia for the top five.

8-28-07 Jim Russell Shifter Race #5

Race Report: Jim Russell Shifter Sunday Series Race #5 – August 19, 2007

Another wonderful weather day at the Infineon track, mid 75’s with a bit of a breeze. Turn out for the August event was somewhat light due to vacations and such, but this did not take away from some great competition and strong performances. Chris Scribner was the guest Race Director for this event, and he had an easy day of it, until the last turn of the last lap of the last race of the day, then he had a tough call to make.

KLS Racing 125 Stock Honda Light
As was the trend of the July race, the rest of the pack has been getting closer to ending the dominance of Brad Lloyd in this class. Well, on Friday, Brad showed up and put in some last minute practice and it paid off. In Qualify, Brad took the poll for the first time in three races over Steve Libby and Matt Hauff. In the Prefinal, Brad won the race by 5 seconds over Joe Hammill with Libby third. And again in the Main, Lloyd won by 2 seconds over a strong Joe Hammill with Libby again 3rd. Brad also turned the fastest lap of 48.996, the only driver in the Main to get into the 48 second bracket. So much for the field getting closer to Brad, he seems to know when to turn up the wick.

Fastech Racing 80 Grand Masters
Month after month, 10 to 12 45+ year old drivers show up to have their monthly dose of racing fun and this day was no exception with 10 entries. Bill James has been improving over the last couple of races and he made it pay off by taking the pole in Qualify ahead of Bill Wages, Marc Stanley and the winner of the last couple of races Bob Lesnett. At the start of the PreFinal, James had a great start, but his front row buddy, Bill Wages, had one of the worst starts and fell back several positions. Mid way through the hear race, Marc Stanley made the move to take over the lead and went on to a 1.3 second win over James followed by Lesnett, Tom Nelson and Wages. In the Main, Stanley and James got away clean, but Wages put his had up as he entered turn one and exited the track through the In gate. Bill was out with no brakes. Mark went on to take a 2 second win over a strong James with Lesnett settling in for an easy third. Roger Cornwall and Steve Peterson both got by Nelson to take the 4th and 5th spots.

ICC/Moto Grand Masters
Two months ago Tom Fallon entered this class using his stock Honda engine and was competitive. Last month Brad Shaffer entered with his stock Honda and won. So Michael Sherrard said why not,and moved from the Stock Honda Light class to the ICC/Moto Grand Masters class. And this turned out to be a good move for Michael. In Qualify, Sherrard took the pole ahead of Shaffer and Geoff Provo (ICC). In the PreFinal, Shaffer took the win ahead of Sherrard and Fallon, all three running stock Hondas. In the Main, Shaffer proved to be the fittest taking the 15 lap race by 11 seconds over Sherrard, with Fallon third, John Coyle 4th and Geoff Provo 5th. With half the field of 8 entries being stock Honda engines, expect to see more drivers consider this class, but remember, you must be 45 years of older.

Infinity Karting Services 125 Stock Honda Heavy
Like the Stock Honda Light class, the Heavy class has an all conquering driver who no one has figured out how to beat. Matt Alcorn comes into Race #5 with 4 wins in a row and looks too fast and confident to lose. But that did not stop Mark Drennan from trying. In Qualify, Drennan put his kart on pole ahead of Alcorn, Donald Durbin and Marc Elliott. At the start of the PreFinal, carb problems hit Durbin and he fill back until he finally pulled off. Drennan took the PreFinal, but Alcorn was right on his tail all the way, checking out Mark’s every move and plotting where he would make the pass in the Main. Marc Elliott took 3rd followed by Andrew Kidd and Alex Keith. In the Main, Mark took the lead over Alcorn, but on lap 3 Alcorn made a strong out braking pass to take the lead. Well, the race is over, oh not quiet yet. Drennan attacked a few turns later to take over the lead. Now Alcorn had to look for another way by. But unlike the PreFinal where Alcorn was right on the bumper of Drennan most of the race, Alcorn had a hard time getting to the bumper of Drennan’a kart. Drennan did not make any mistakes for the remainder of the race and took a 1 second win over the 4 time winner Alcorn. Marc Elliott took third and Durbin came from last to take the 4th place spot ahead of a strong drive from Andrew Kidd.

Cameron Karting ICC/Moto Masters
With 12 drivers entered, this was the largest ICC Masters field of the year. And making a rare Masters class appearance was Steve Cameron, who was wanting to start his prep for the SuperNationals by running at the 400 pound weight in the Masters class. Of course, this is bad news for the regular Masters drivers, they have yet to beat Cameron when he runs with them. And nothing looked any different this race as Steve put his kart on pole by over a half second over defending champ JP Cadoux, followed by Jim Kidd, Ethan Wilson and Ron Tamba. In the PreFinal, Cameron shot out to a quick lead and went on to 5 second win over Cadoux, Kidd, James Syar and Wilson. Again in the Main, Cameron lead from the green flag with the same 4 spots from the PreFinal filling in the 2nd through 5th positions in the Main. The best performances of the race were James Syar in 4th and Ethan Wilson, both putting in their best drives of the year.

ICC
With only two entries, it was again the Derek and Tommy show. In this the 5th chapter of this duel, Thompson took control of the race at the Qualify, but stumbled on the start and Tillett was able to take the lead. But Thompson was dialed in and tracked down Derek and took the lead mid way through the 10 lap race and went on to a 1.5 second win. In the Main, Tommy took the lead at turn one after the green flag and was never headed to take the win. After 3 races, Derek has three wins, Tommy has 2 wins. Next Chapter on Sept 16.

Fastech Racing Senior 80 and 80 Heavy
The last race of the day turned into the most back and forth race. 6 Senior drivers and two 80 Heavy drivers took the green. In Qualify, Robert Porter took the pole ahead of Nathan Breitling and Eddie Veyl. Tag Expert driver Craig DiGrazia had to settle for 8th position due to breaking down on lap 2 of the timed session. In the PreFinal, Porter took a slim win over Breitling followed by Veyl. DiGrazia stalled on the start and had to drive catch up the whole race finally taking 4th and posting the fastest lap of the PreFinal. In the Main, Porter took the lead but was shortly overtaken by Breiting. Porter then out broke Breitling to take the lead again and Breitling went off track and lost a couple more spots. All the time DiGrazia was moving forward. Now it was Porter, Veyl, DiGrazia and Breitling. DiGrazia then gets by Veyl and goes after Porter. With one lap to go DiGrazia fianally gets to the rear bumper of Porter. Nose to tail they raced, until the last turn and DiGrazia took a shot on the rumble strips and bumped Porters rear bumper and Porter took to the dirt on the exit of the last turn to finish just behind the charging DiGrazia. An exciting finish, but Race Director Chris Scribner felt the bump was not a good racing move and switched the order of the finish: win to Robert Porter and second to DiGrazia, third to Veyl and Breitling 4th. Grant Heatherington took 6th overall and 1st in 80 Heavy. And exciting end to a great day of racing.

Next Shifter Sunday race is Sept 16, on the tough Reverse track configuration.

8-28-07 Jim Russell Rotax Race #5

Race Report: Jim Russell Rotax Saturday Series Race #5 – August 2007

The Weather was again great, warm with a breeze, for Race #5. The turnout in the Rotax classes were down by about 20 entries due to the loss of drivers or crews that were attending the Rotax Nationals in Centennial, Colorado. With so many top level drivers gone, almost all classes were going to see a first time winner in class for the 2007 season.

AMD/Marin Karting Rotax Masters and Rotax Masters Light
9 Rotax Masters Light and 1 Masters driver took the green flag. Joe Karrett dominated the weekend running in both the Masters Light and Senior Rotax classes on the same day. Joe pulled off the hat trick of taking the pole position and winning the PreFinal and Main. The surprise of the day was the new speed of Mert Solis who took second in Qualify and the PreFinal, but had to settle for 3rd in the Main. Raymond Bustamante Sr came back from his impressive July win to take 2nd in the Main. A good battle raged on throughout the Main with 4 drivers racing hard for the 2nd thru 5th spots. In the end Jo Montes finished 4th and Alexie Santos 5th. In the Masters class, Mr August, Peter Boot, took the 1st place in the Masters class. It seems that Peter always gets his best result of the year at the August race, and his 1st place finish is Peter’s best result of the year, again.

Junior 1 - Comer
Seven drivers turned out to race hard, and hard they did. Luis Tyrrell pulled off the hat trick by winning the pole, Prefinal and Main events. Bobby Tifft again was the only driver able to stay close to Luis. But in the Main, Grant Ereth took the initial lead of the race, then Tyrrell took the point in short order, with Tifft in 3rd. By the time Tifft got by Ereth, he was to far back to challenge. Tifft thus took 2nd overall, 5 seconds back of Luis. Ereth took 3rd place in the Main, some 14 seconds back of Luis. Brody Zink continued his strong performances of the last couple of months taking a solid 4th, but he had to work hard as he had to start from the back of the grid due to a DNF in the PreFinal. Benjamin Barudoni ran a solid race and took the 5th overall in the race, his best showing of the year.

AMD/Marin Karting Senior Rotax
Six drivers showed up to race. Joe Karrett was now getting back into his early season performance band by taking the pole, PreFinal and Main for the day to win for the first time at Infineon this year. This was the second hat trick of the day for Joe since he also did the hat trick in the Masters Light class earlier in the afternoon. Michael Ostrowski was hoping for a win this day after so many ‘almosts’ this year, but the new chassis he was trying this race did not work so well and Michael was not up to his normal top performance self. But he did pull it altogether for the Main and take the 2nd overall. First time racer Nikola Radosavljevich looking impressive in his first karting race, taking third overall. Carlos Caldron put in his best drive of the year and took the 4th place, followed by another new driver Chris Lock.

TaG Masters Light
Seven Light drivers took the green, with David Oroshnik seeing if he could make it 3 wins in a row in the Lights class. In Qualify, Oroshnik took the pole ahead of Herman Ip and Joe Hollinger. In the Prefinal, Oroshnik won with Hollinger 2nd, Ip 3rd and Grant Hetherington 4th. Hollinger took the lead at the green, followed by Ip and Oroshnik. But midway through tic-tac-toe, David hit Herman in the rear which spun out Herman’s TaG kart, and Herman fell back to 7th. The incident also allowed Hetherington to take over 2nd which he held to the checkered flag. Oroshnink finished 3rd in the race, but race director Chris Scribner placed David back to 6th due to the contact with Herman Ip. This elevated Marc Pingol to 3rd in the race, Dolores Mosqueda to 4th and Ip to 5th.

TaG Masters Heavy
In the TaG Heavy race, Randy Wetmore took the pole, followed by Tim Cleland and Ray Wetmore. Bill McCallister had the wrong spark plug in this borrowed engine and lost his 3rd place Qualify and would then have to start the Main from the rear. In the PreFinal, Cleland again showed the way by winning the PreFinal over Randy Wetmore. Bill McCallister went from 10th to 4th after turn one of the PreFinal and eventually took 3rd place at the end of the race. In the Main, Cleland again showed great speed and consistant driving to take the race. Bill McCallister made a good show of it by taking 2nd less than 2 seconds back of Tim. Randy Wetmore finished 3rd and Ray Wetmore took 4th. But Ray’s finish was not an easy one. Near the end of the race, Bob Hurst lost his nose when he came it contact with Ray Wetmore. Bob Hurst took 4th on the track, but he was disqualified when he did not make weight at the scales due to the loss of the nose piece. This allowed Ray to move to the 4th spot and Woody Poynter to take the last trophy position.

AMD/Marin Karting Rotax DD2
With 5 drivers and the crew for another 4 drivers all attending the Rotax Nationals in Colorado, the DD2 field was the smallest one of the year with 4 entries. But this race marked the first DD2 race for Michael Ostrowski. With only one practice day under his belt after acquiring the DD2 in a trade for a motorcycle, Michael proceeded to use the race day as a good way to improve, bring his best lap times down in each of the 3 times sessions. In the Main, Michael took a very strong win over Mike Briones and the father-son team of Cameron Craig’s, dad beating son this time out.

AMD/Marin Karting Junior Rotax and California Kartworld Junior HPV-2
With only 8 combined entries this month, the Junior Rotax and HPV-2 karts ran together. For the first time though, an HPV-2 engine kart took top honors in the combined result. Donavon Wheeler took his second HPV-2 win in a row and beat the Junior Rotax karts for the first time. Donavon also took the race hat trick of winning the pole, PreFinal and the win in the Main. But chasing Donavon was Rotax Junior driver Cameron Pringle, who had to settle for a second overall less than 3 seconds back at the end of the 15 lap Main. Third overall was Ray Bustamante Jr in a Rotax, then Kiel Spaulding in his return to the Infineon track in his HPV-2 kart taking 4th overall and second in class. The drive of the weekend was the impressive showing of Kathryn Cornell in her HPV-2 kart taking 5th overall and 3rd in class. She finished less than 1 second back of Spaulding and another second in front of Keirstin Gee, who was 6th overall and 3rd in Junior Rotax.

Race #6 of the Russell Series returns to the challenging Reverse track configuration on September 15th along with the return of all the Rotax National Drivers.

8-20-07 MMS Kart Racing Engines Opens with a Win

The recent addition to MMS Karting from Reno Nevada was Prominently known Engine Builder in Doug Sharp. With the machinery in place already, Sharp wasted no time in going to work on Horsepower. The recent Stars race in Shawano WI proved this.

Driver Conor Daly recently switching chassis to the Top Kart, was running a Doug Sharp Prepared Parilla Leopard. Daly on a new chassis, and a new engine from a new Engine Builder showed his strength early Saturday by place his Doug Sharp Power on pole. Daly showed all day he was the driver to beat by Winning the PreFinal and again starting on pole for the Final. Daly drove to an easy victory giving MMS Karting their first win as an Engine Builder.

Day 2 of the Stars East Race #2 Conor Daly again put his MMS Karting prepared Leopard on pole. In the PreFinal Daly led many laps battling with his teamate Adam Johnson for the lead but would finish second starting outside front row for the Final. Daly would again battle for the top spot swapping the lead several times. Conor Daly only had to finish 10th or better to lock up the East Championship. Daly would drive to a Championship finishing a solid second to lock up the Championship and deliver MMS Karting two podium finishes.

Watch for MMS Racing Engines at Future Stars Races and the upcoming Region 11 race at their home track in Reno.

8-13-07 Infineon TAG Race #5

Great weather again, and a good turnout of 62 entries. Track configuration was the Sprint track.  Attached is the race results and updated points.

Update on Rick Starr:  Rick, TaG GM, had some chest pains during the afternoon and was ambulanced out to a hospital.  It was a false alarm, by the time Rick got to the hospital, he is OK, they ran test and nothing was found to be wrong.  He went home that night and is planning to race at Infineon next weekend.

KLS Racing Junior Puma
Eight drivers showed up to have a run at the Junior Puma class with 2 time winner Austin Root looking to pad his slim lead over Jarrett Lile in the championship chase. In Qualify, Andrew Wolocatuik took his first ever pole ahead of Austin and Andrew Novich. In the PreFinal, Wolocatuik took a slim 1 second win over a much improved Novich with Root less than a second further back. In the Main, things changed dramatically. Wolocatuik took the lead at the start but he and Novich touched at the exit of the very fast Tic-Tac-Toe corner sending Wolocatuik spinning in the dirt and Novich gathering himself together to race on. Novich stayed in front and pulled away from the rest of the field to take a 5 second win over Austin Root. Novich also took fastest lap in the Main, a half second faster than his qualify time. But the best racing was behind the 2 top drivers. Jarrett Lile and Mitch Young battled for the entire race with Young leading early in the Main, but Lile got by late in the race to take third and Young fourth. Ryan Sonntag had his hands full for the last half of the race with pressure coming from Shantae Barudoni and at the end, Ryan took 5th just 2 tenths of a second ahead of Shantae.

Fastech Racing TaG Heavy
9 karts took the green for the TaG Heavy race with some very strong drivers in the field making this a race that was going to have some tough racing. In Qualify, Donald Durbin took pole ahead of last months class winner Tim Cleland followed by Dean Sanders. In the Prefinal, Sanders got a very good start and took the early lead ahead of Durbin and Randy Wetmore with Cleland falling back to 7th. But turn 1 of the Main was where the action was. The start was just one of the those messy ones and after all the dust settled down, Randy Wetmore was in the lead followed by Sanders and Durbin. Durbin was the fastest kart in the race and was looking for a way by Sanders the entire race, then Donald remembered, Sanders is on of his good customers and thought best of a tough pass. So that is how it finished, Wetmore taking a 2 tenths of second win over Sanders, followed by Durbin, Ray Wetmore and Steve Elo.

Cambrian Go Karts TaG Grand Masters
13 drivers took the green for Race #5. In Qualify, Scott Mortenson went fast and took the pole followed by last month’s winner Michael Sherrard and another previous winner James Ward. Making his once a year appearance to the series, Mat Kattanek took 4th on the grid with Bill McCallister shacking off some cobwebs after being off for a couple of races and taking 5th. In the PreFinal, Mortenson took the early lead and made no mistakes to take a slim win over McCallister, followed by Ward, Kattanek and Sherrard. These 5 drivers all finished within 2 seconds of each other. Mortenson has been fast in the past, but has never won the Main, was this going to be his day. Mortenson lead the field into turn one of the Main, but Sherrard and McCalister were leading coming out of turn 1. Scott fell to 5th early in the race, his visions of his first feature win was quickly fading. Ward held 3rd much of the Main, but had a mechanical breakdown on lap 10. Mat Kattanek took over 3rd, Mortenson then took over 4th with Jim Zootis moving up to the last trophy position.

California Kartworld TaG Expert
A tough field of 9 drivers entered the Expert class and they put on a great battle of speed.
In Qualify, Jason Toft broke after only 2 laps at speed, but that was good enough to take the pole position with the only sub 50 second lap of the day, 49.844. Brett Buckwalter, Larry Fraser and last month’s winner Colin Katzakian were 2nd thru 4th. In the PreFinal, Toft took the lead followed by Buckwalter, but within three laps, Brett made the move to take the lead on the turn leading into the infield. Toft, Katzakian, Victor Sinzig and Craig DiGrazia toke the next 4 spots. In the Main, Nic LeDuc had to start from the back of the field since he missed some sessions due to his running the Formula Russell races down on the big track. At the green flag, Toft got the jump on Brett, but again, within a couple laps Brett made the pass for the lead on the turn leading into the infield. DiGrazia dropped out on lap 2 and Sinzig also fell out on lap 5. Brett started to pull out a small lead with the real battles going on behind him. Katzakian then Fraser got by Toft. Colin continued to inch closer to Brett and in the process took the fastest lap of the race. LeDuc had to get by a few karts and by the time he did, he was another 4 seconds back of the 4 front runners. Colin got close, but had to settle for a second place, 3 tenths behind Brett. This was Buckwalter’s third race win for the season. Third went to the elder statesman of the class in Larry Fraser, who at around 40 is not giving away anything to the best young TaG drivers. Toft settled for 4th with LeDuc taking 5th and series newcomers and IKF veterens Mike Betelho and Zachary Dericco taking 6th and 7th

Junior 1 Gazelle
The Gazelle class has been the personal property of Joseph Keaton all year. But today, things changed with the change being in the form of Daniel Langon. In Qualify, Keaton was 7 tenths in front of the field followed by Langon, Nick Camusi and Noah Hermanson. In the PreFinal, Langon took the lead at the start, but it did not take Keaton much time to take over the top spot. Only difference was Langon picked up a lot of time from Qualify and stayed very close to Keaton and finished 2 tenths of a second back. Camusi, Hermanson and Maxx Marian filled out the top 5 positions. In the Main, Langon again stayed close to the 4 time winner and at one point took the lead for a brief moment. Keaton was clearly faster in the outside loop portion of the track, Langon better in the infield. The battle for the lead raged on to the very last turn where Keaton left the door open on the very last turn before the checkered flag and Langon went for it. Midway through the turn the two touched, Langon dashed to the finish line ahead Kaeton who was making a wide exit that ending with his kart in the tire wall just past the finish line. Langon takes his first feature win, Keaton takes the second with a sore wrist for the collison with the tire wall, but continues to control the race for the Championship. Behind these two were some other great battles. Camusi lead Hermanson for most of the Main, then Noah made a great pass with about 4 laps to go to take 3rd spot. But Noah mistook the white flag for the checkered flag and came off the track on the white flag lap. Heartbreak for Noah. Thus Camusi took the 3rd, Maxx Marian 4th and Colin Daley 5th. Daley and Marian also battled all race long making for a great race with several battles.

Fastech Racing TaG Light
The last race of the day continued the whole days theme, close racing with constant battles all the way to the end. In Qualify, Taylor Robutz took the pole followed by a great performance from Ray Trimble to take second. PH Giffels, Jon Mullins and Jamie Faulkner were 3rd thru 5th. In the PreFinal, Robutz and Giffels pulled away from the rest of the field, PH having more than enough to challenge the 3 time winner in Robutz. Green, Terre Rothweiler and Mullins filled out the 3rd thru 5th positions. In the Main, Robutz took the lead early and started to pull away. Giffel’s engine appeared to have fallen off and he was not able to challenge Robutz or most of the other top drivers, finally settling for a 7th at the end. Rothweiler got clear of the rest of the field and took off after Robutz. What looked like an impossible deficit to make up at lap 5 turned into one of the greatest drives of his life for Rothweiler as he finally got to the rear bumper of Rotutz on Lap 13. But Robutz pushed a bit harder and pulled out a 2 second lead at the checkered flag. Marc Green drove mostly by himself during the Main and took a comfortable 3rd. In 4th was Amber Friedberg, driving a new chassis for the first time. After a lot of tuning changes, they finally came upon the right combination and she was able to look very racy during the Main. 5th went to series newcomer Marc Elliott.

Next race for the TaG Series will be September 8th on the Reverse Track.

8-8-07 IKF Region 11 Action packed in Stockton

This last weekend The Jim Russell IKF Region 11 Series sponsored by Bridgestone competed at the Stockton Motorplex. Recently the track went under some track repairs receiving a facelift. Known for the bumps, the track received a Grinding in the bumpy areas then a sealant and some track grip in some other areas. Action started Friday when the racers took to the track for practice. The rubber went down quick and by mid day the buzz through the pits was the problem of the chassis getting over hooked. As the sun went down the BBQ by Stockton Motorplex started and beverages by NorcalKarters.com provided a great party and social
hour(s) for all.

Saturday morning the racers began to fill in while the track served breakfast. the first class to take to the track was Jr Comer. Bordogna's Jon Norris grabbed the pole with a 34.327 which is flying for a Comer. Jon Norris got the lead early in the heat but was tailed by a pack of five. Norris got pole for the main but was again tailed by the top four. Kaiser and Tift both attempted to mount a challenge but Norris was able to hold them off. Norris got the win. Kyle Kaiser was second, Bobby Tift and Logan Wyman was fourth.

Next up was the very competitive 125 National Cup. NorcalKarters.com's Chris Scribner got the pole with a 30.567. In the heat Scribner and Kartworld's Jason Toft checked out. Toft later broke a throttle cable and fell way back. Scribner got the pole for the main. Gwin, Botelho, and Hodgson all stayed the same. Jason Toft drove from eighth position on the starting grid to fifth.

On the start Norris got an early lead. Dement got into a battle for second with Justin Cole, and this allowed Norris to cruise to an easy victory. 7-31-07 4-Cycle Nats Day 3

The last day had the most laid back pit area of the weekend. I believe it was due to the fact of everyone being tired. The Folgers coffee was once again served at 7am sharp, but the pit area remained quiet. Drivers meeting started out with the basic lecture from Greg Albiani, but the attitude suddenly changed when the drama of Chip Mooneyham protecting his son CJ and a duffy. Thanks to this, the pits suddenly became tense, and every driver once again had the killer instinct.

The day started with Stock Animal Medium. Chris Scribner again grabbed the Screaming Eagle with a 34.741 pushing his tally to three. In the Heat Scribner led until the last lap when Sheila got by Scribner for the pole position. On the start of the final, Scribner got the lead from the outside and led throughout. On the last lap in draft Hodgson pulled the trigger and got the lead going into the sweeper. Scribner tried to take it back, but Hodgson played the chess game on earned his first IKF Duffy. Scribner and Nash followed, David Lowe, and Travis Lowe rounded the top five.

Jr 1 Stock Animal was second up as Justin Villanueva grabbed the Screaming Eagle with a 35.734. But this race was controlled by Ryan Lauers as he won the PreFinal, and won the duffy in the Final. Justin Villanueva was second, Carsen Coffey and Kyle Blum rounded out the field.

Star took to the track next as Scribner grabbed another Screaming Eagle with a 33.229 which was .609 a second faster then the field. Scribner jumped out to an early lead and looked to dominate, but his engine expired. This left the battle to Burt Gasaway and Tyler Agan. Agan held off Gasaway early, but Gasaway's engine expired also leaving Agan an easy ride to the Duffy. Agan didnt make weight and this inherited the Duffy to Jonathan Miller making him an IKF Expert. Roger Cathey was second, Glenn Young, Burt Gasaway, and Herb Lee the top five.

Masters Heavy took to the track and Chip Mooneyham got the screaming eagle with a 38.935. Mooneyham was a step up on the field all day. Jr 2 Animal Sportsman was up now and Bobby Runyan again claimed the Screaming Eagle. Runyan Dominated the Heat and again in the Final. Runyan won his first two duffy's, in his first two wins, and became an IKF Expert. Ryan Garcia and Kolby Araki battled for second, and Garcia won the battle, Christopher Crompe was fourth and Bradley Genseal fifth.

Last up on the day was IKF Briggs World Formula Hvy. Cole Nelson jumped into the kart drove to a duffy in the previous day by Sheila. Nelson earned the Screaming Eagle. Nelson got a heat race win to start pole. In the Final, Curtis Lowers, Chris Scribner, and Cole Nelson battled for the lead early. Scribner faded around halfway, and the battle came down to the last lap as Lowers made the move on nelson in the Hairpin, but Nelson held the position on the outside for the Duffy. Dejected Lowers finished second, Scribner, Travis Lowe, and Chris Newton the top five.

7-31-07 4-Cycle Nats Day 2

The second Day of Nationals was a bit cooler than the first. There was a nice breeze coming through the pits and the Staff had there new T-Shirts in for sale and the Coffee was ready at exactly, 7am. The Best part of waking up at Tom Dash Memorial Speedway was Folgers in your cup.

The day started with the Animal Super Sportsman where competitors would run gas. Tyler Agan got pole with a 35.692. In the heat race Agan would get a challenge from Cody Hodgson and Curtis Lowers, but Agan would get the pole for the Final as well. Agan took the lead in the final early and flexed his muscle. Lowers and Hodgson would challenge for the lead, but this was Agan's race to lose, and he would grab his first Duffy as a Senior. Lowers and Hodgson were on his tail, CJ Mooneyham and Sheila Bukamier-Nash was fifth.

Next up was Jr 1 Animal SS hvy, and there was some revenge from the day before. David Schorn was the Screaming Eagle winner running a 35.912 just four tenths of the seniors. Ryan Lauer won the PreFinal setting the stage for a shootout between the top three. Schorn was a Snake in the main stalking the leader until it counted. David Schorn claimed his duffy. Ryan Lauer, Kyle Blum, and Johnny Tevis Jr were right there in tow, and Justin Villanueva was fifth.

IKF Briggs World Formula was the next race to take to the track. Chris Scribner originally claimed the Screaming Eagle, but didn't make weight handing the fast time honors to Burt Gasaway. When the green dropped in the PreFinal Sheila Bukamier-Nash took the point early for pole position in the Final. From the Start Sheila took the top spot and held it. Gasaway followed in draft and the two checked out from the beginning and left the battle to those behind them for third. Gasaway tried to make the move in the final lap but Nash held on for her first of the weekend. Gasaway was second. Chris Scribner and Travis Lowe beat out Ryan Priestman for the other podium positions.

The new class for 2007 was the Modified Animal. allowing Engine Builders to Blueprint the engine, provided fast racing. Jonathan Miller got the Screaming Eagle with a 32.667. Scribner got the top spot early in the PreFinal but Miller got the spot back right before the checkered to once again start pole. On the start of the Final, Scribner again got the lead. Miller and Scribner traded the position early, but miller would settle into the draft game. Last lap Miller got into Scribner and allowed Tyler Agan to get by for second. Scribner got his second Duffy of the Weekend. Miller fell back to third, Alan Cathey and and Curtis lowers were the top five.

Following Modified animal was Jr 2 Stock Animal. Bobby Runyan got the Screaming Eagle with a 33.997. In the PreFinal Runyan showed he meant business after getting robbed the first day and dominating. In the main, Runyan showed much more of the Domination and grabbed not only his first duffy, but his first ever win since he began karting a short time ago. Kolby Araki was second, Taelor James was third, Christopher Crompe, and Bradley Genseal fifth.

The last class of the day was Stock Hvy Flathead. This was filled with controversy as Sheila Bukamier-Nash got the Screaming Eagle. There were only three drivers in this class, and due to Sheila running three classes on this day, she decided to sit out the heat. In the Main, Sheila was held up by Father of CJ, Chip, and this allowed CJ Mooneyham to get away for his first duffy. Sheila Bukamier-Nash was second and Chip Mooneyham was third.

7-30-07 4-Cycle Nats day 1

Every year the other breed of karters gather for the 4Cycle Nationals. This year the Nats were held in Atwater Kart Club. What fine job the Club did hosting this years nationals. Stealing the Portland margarita recipe made a nice touch to Tri-Tip and Chicken served at the BBQ.

Racing got started Thursday and the first Class to hit the track was Stock Animal Heavy. Chris Scribner Captured the Screaming Eagle putting in a time of 35.089. The heat was an epic 4-cycle battle. CJ Mooneyham and Scribner battledback and forth for the lead until Scribner took it over for good. Starting pole Scribner got the lead early but Curtis Lowers took it over fast. This led to Scribner and Lowers switching the top spot until Lowers fell in behind in draft to get some breathing room. last lap Lowers dove in on Scribner in the Hairpin and the two rubbed. Scribner held the position on the outside to grab the First Duffy of the weekend. Lowers and Cody Hodgson made contact as well Allowing Sheila Bukamier-Nash the second position, Mooneyham, Lowers, and Thomas Merrill the top five.

David Schorn was second, Johnny Tevis Jr, Kyle Blum, and Justin Villanueva the top five.

Masters was next on the track. If there was a scary race all weekend it was the Masters. Old men getting into karts and battling for a Duffy. Chip Mooneyham grabbed the Screaming Eagle by putting in a qualifying lap of 36.126. There was no doubt Mooneyham was the driver to beat. Chip won the Heat to get pole in the main. Mooneyham check out early leaving the race for second up for grabs. Terry Nash drove a hard race for the second position leaving Roger Cathey for third, Brian Glasgow and Glenn Young the top five.

Jr 2 IKF Briggs World Formula provided some close racing. Bobby Runyan grabbed the Screaming Eagle with a 34.265. 7-24-07 Former Karter wins Mid Ohio Touring Car Series

After years of learning the series and developing their own cars, the BimmerWorld SPEED World Challenge Touring Car team broke through at Mid-Ohio on Sunday to score their first win as an entrant, the first win for new driver Joey Hand, and the first professional win for the new BMW 3-series E90 chassis in North America.

After a weekend of so many firsts, team owner James Clay was beaming with pride after sharing sips of Hand’s champagne with his BimmerWorld crew in victory circle. “It’s awesome—it’s taken us a lot of time and a lot of hard work to get here. We knew it would be tough to develop these new cars and it’s nice that it’s finally paying off. It’s a start, but it’s just one win. (I hope) it’s the start of a trend.”

Joey Hand, new to the BimmerWorld team, but by no means new to driving BMW’s or working with James Clay, was thankful for the opportunity to end a dry spell for race wins, and to exorcize the memories of a famous crash that saw him somersaulting last year at Mid-Ohio. The first thing he did after the race was to call his wife and tell her the good news, “Honey, I survived Mid-Ohio this year and actually won!”

For Hand, victory is the only thing he races for. “It’s an awesome feeling. This is what I remember from winning. I’ve won all my life from Karting to race cars, and I’ve just had this dry streak with some situations that didn’t go well, or some close calls. Last year I seemingly had this one won, and ended up in the biggest wreck I’ve ever been in, and the biggest wreck most people have ever seen. Somebody told me that Mid-Ohio owed me one, and maybe that’s true; today it was more about the BimmerWorld crew guys working hard all week, working through small challenges we had, powering through that, and I wanted to make sure I came in here and gave these guys a hundred percent.”

With Hand coming to BimmerWorld from a number of high profile racing series and teams, it’s what he discovered within the BimmerWorld program that was most refreshing. “(I found a) well built race car, a safely built race car—that’s important to me, and a car that had all the potential I needed—it went fast as soon as I got into it.”

Rather than Hand coming to the team and bringing the missing tools necessary for the program to win, he found the car, crew, and expertise already there for him to take the checkered flag. “When I walked into this deal, this was a top-notch professional team with great crew guys—some of the best I’ve seen, especially at this level of racing. These guys are all Rolex or ALMS-quality mechanics. The data guys, the engine builders, all that stuff is top-notch.

“It’s not just me coming in here as a professional that really makes all the difference; sure, my knowledge helps, but if you don’t have a good crew and a good race car, I’m still going to finish 8th or 9th. I can’t just come in and ‘wheel’ anything. The car has to be something, and this car is something. This team has got everything they need to be successful through the end of the year, and next year to go for a championship.”

Seth Thomas, the top qualifying BimmerWorld driver in 3rd place, would experience the highs and lows of motor sports when a driveline failure kept his car stationary as the green lights came on. “It was a short and sweet race for me, (but) it was fun watching Joey from the side lines. It’s great being able to see his driving style and my driving style in these kinds of cars with the Toyo Tires and the Performance Friction Brakes; we can blend those styles together and I think it will be a killer package.”

In the cut-throat SPEED Touring Car series, the BimmerWorld team takes on the full might of manufacturer supported efforts from Mazda and Acura with the BMW 325i chassis that are built and developed in-house. Unlike Mazda and Acura, the BimmerWorld team has only their experience and relationships with key suppliers to battle the factories. Clay is the first to share the credit for the win with their partners that have helped to provide the advantage needed for their customer cars and their race cars.

“Seth and Joey have demonstrated all weekend how fast and competitive our race cars are. Seth had a let down in the race, but he was our fastest driver all weekend and has been ready to win all season. When his team mate won instead, it affirmed what we’ve been doing for years on track and at our shop: we race what we sell, and what we sell is the best on the market.

“The Performance Friction brake kits on our race cars are very similar to the same kit we sell to customers and install for street or lapping day use. The same goes for our Moton shocks—the Moton Club Sports we sell to our clients have the same engineering quality, design, and racing lineage as the full-race versions on our World Challenge cars. We’re proud to represent all our partners and to prove their quality with a win. We’re working hard to win more and more for them.”

With Clay’s bold choice to abandon the popular but old BMW E46 chassis, to buy three new E90’s, and to fashion them into race winning form, a hard year and a half of developing the E90 is starting to bear fruit.

“I don’t think you can expect to be strong out of the box, and through all the troubles we’ve had, this has definitely not been an easy road. But it’s what you have to do; you can’t sit and race your old stuff and continue to do well. BimmerWorld pioneers things—that’s what we do as a company, that’s what we do with the parts that we sell, and it’s what we do on the race team.”

Tooele, UT (July 15, 2007) – PR1 Motorsports driver Thomas Merrill scored his first win of the Pacific F2000 season in dominating fashion at the series’ visit to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.  His win on Saturday also included pole position and fast lap of the race, a clean sweep and maximum points.  Friday was a little bit different however, where he qualified 2nd, and had to earn his podium the hard way.  He was forced off the track in the first corner by a late braking competitor, and fell to 22nd place.  With the help of two full course cautions Merrill charged back through the field, making his last two passes on the last lap to finish 3rd.  The young driver from Salinas, California credited his success to the quality of both the Miller facility and his PR1 Motorsports team.

“After our success at Buttonwillow, we knew that we had what it took to win, and that this race was our next chance,” commented Merrill.  “All of our hard work paid off, the team did a fantastic job all weekend, and the race was a lot of fun to drive.”

With his strong results Merrill climbs from 4th to 2nd in the overall points standings, 75 points back of overall points leader and PR1 teammate Pat Barrrett.  Thomas also takes a commanding lead in the Rookie of the year standings, one of his goals this year.

“Given my rough start to the year, I am very happy with where I have gotten in the points.  Rookie of the Year is something that I really wanted and I am happy to be in the lead going into our last 2 race weekends.  I would like to thank Merrill Farms, LLC, and Smith & Hook Winery/Hahn Estates, and new partner the Don Chapin Company for their continued support of me this year.”

Rounds 9 and 10 of the Pacific F2000 Series are set to be held at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California on September 22nd and 23rd.  It promises to be the most competitive race of the year, as many of the top drivers, including Merrill, are very familiar with the track.  For complete information and photos of Thomas Merrill’s racing progress, and for more information about his team, please log onto www.thomasmerrillmotorsports.com and www.pr1motorsports.com
