2-6-07 Official Kart Sport Grand Prix Press Release

2007 KartSport Grand Prix Official Details
Third annual event unveils karting/supermoto dual event

The 3rd Annual KartSport Grand Prix has been confirmed for June 8-10, 2007
at the Jim Russell International Karting Center. The event will once again
feature the formula of a high cash payout while offering just a handful of   classes. This year's KSGP will be the only national event at the esteemed
and popular karting facility located at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.

Radio ads on rock stations, coverage on Bay Area television, articles in
RACER magazine and local newspapers, and tireless efforts by the PR
department of Infineon Raceway have established the KartSport Grand Prix
as one of the most widely publicized events in karting. The first two
years of the KSGP set attendance records at the karting facility, yet 2007
will feature a number of innovations targeted at extending the awareness
of the sport.

In cooperation with Supermoto USA, this year's KartSport Grand Prix will
feature a Pro 450 supermoto class that will be a part of the event
weekend. Supermoto racing is a very popular form of motorsport, as its
unique blend of dirt and pavement motorcycle competition produces close
and exciting racing. Over 40 riders are expected to enter the single
supermoto class during the KSGP weekend.

"We've been tossing this idea around for the last couple of years, and
with the help of Brok McAlister of Supermoto USA, we're finally able to
bring it to reality," stated KSGP organizer Jeff Franz. "Within our
industry, it's an established truth that we must make bigger and better
efforts to showcase our sport to newer and larger audiences, and it's very
clear that the karting and supermoto communities have a lot in common. The
response from both sides has been tremendous, and we're greatly looking
forward to using this cross-promotion to drive our advertising efforts
into different markets."

Karting classes for the 2007 KartSport Grand Prix will be ICC, TAG, G1,
and Stock Moto. The Miss KartSport Beauty Pageant will also make a return,
along with the always-popular Vintage Kart racing exhibition.

As ever, the KSGP is dedicated to bringing many of karting's finest
operations personnel under one roof. The 2007 staff will include such  respected names as Don Moormeister, John Motley, Bob Bellino, Tom Thelen,
Chris Egger, Gary Baldes, Terry Bybee, and Nichole Wimsett.

The KSGP website (www.kartsportgrandprix.com) will be updated on March 7th
with detailed information about this year's event. For further inquiries,
contact info@kartsportgrandprix.com.

2-27-07  Marin Karting Announces Rotax Max Series

Consider Rotax

Rotax is the largest single formula karting series in the world today with regional, national and world championship events all run by one set of rules.  The proven performance and lower cost to race Rotax engine package has made this class the fastest growing class in both the US and throughout the world over the last 3 or 4 years.

The Marin Karting RMax Challenges series is Northern California’s official regional RMax Challenge Series with a full nine race series that runs at both the Infineon and Dixon kart tracks.  The first six races of the 2007 RMax series is the official qualifier races so drivers can earn their way to the Rotax Nationals which will be held in Denver this year on August 12-18.  The top six drivers at the nationals in Senior Rotax, Junior Rotax and the 2 speed DD2 class will then qualify to move on to the Rotax World Finals to be held this year in Dubai, UEA, Nov 26-Dec 1.  The Rotax national championship and earning a position on the Team USA that goes to the World Finals is becoming one of the most desired achievements in karting.

For more information on the Marin Karting RMax Challenge Series, call Kris at Marin Karting at 415-898-0999 or email the series race director Ric Shaw at ‘ricshaw_srp@hotmail.com’ for more information or to get on the RMax Challenge email list.

The Autosport Auto Show Experience

Since coming back from the Autosport show, everyone I have spoken to has asked how its been. My brief short answer has been, "uh its just like the PRI show." but few have been to the Performance Racing Industry Trade show nor did they have any clue what it was like. My brief explanation was its all the major players in Motorsports. But to be more specific, the PRI is more about horsepower. Everything to the point of how to make horsepower, where to find horsepower. While the Autosport carried the same heavy hitters, it was more than that.

At the NEC Convention Center in Birmingham England, The focus was put more into the different type of racing. I think what caught my eye the most was the format of the show. The first two days was trade only, meaning paid big money to spend big money, while the second two days of the show was more of the entry level racers. Lower budget teams and how to get started, which I feel is a major part of racing today.

The second two day stint had a R/C car track, and featured more drag racing and dirt racing. The drag racing was nothing new to me, here in America we have the Drag Racing industry on top of its game on how to make speed as fast as possible. The dirt racing was a bit different in the fact they had more of a late model type frame with little sheet metal for a body, while carrying a smaller wing shaped more like the Sprint cars. What surprised me was the speed and power some of the R/C Cars had. Gas powered engines with speeds around 35 mph on a track with a straight away of Thirty feet with an unreal power to weight ratio. I was intrigued of the power, after asking starting price on a car with that technology I was looking at 500 pounds which is roughly $1000. If I wanted the fast engine, it was another grand to get the blueprinted ceramic bearing special.

Aston martin had its new display of race cars as well as street cars, As well did Subaru, Mitsubishi, Renault, and Seat. The main displays were the newest technology of the V8 Supercars, Formula 1, and the WRC series. However when it came to the technology, Brembo, Intercomp, Aim, and Eibach all had their newest and greatest on display. What was very impressive was the Grid of Formula 1 cars. Renault up front along side Ferrari, with Mclaren breathing down their necks. However the biggest light that I saw was the popularity of four cylinder racing engines.

In a country/continent where fuel is twice the cost and air is twice the priority as our home country America, there racing was in the midst of changing directions. There was far more popularity in the smaller engines or cleaner engines at the show then anything else. From the R/C Cars, to the cleaner 4-cycle kart racing engines, and the Inline dual overhead cam electronic fuel injected racing engines.

With the growing popularity in our home country of the lawnmower sounding mufflers on the smaller cars and the new four cycle YF 200 or biland, wankel, you name it, the future of this countries racing could very well be coming to cleaner burning quieter 4-cycles after all. Or in car racings case, 4-cylinder engines.

Kartexpo is coming up towards the end of this month and coverage will be here at Norcal Karters. Stay tuned as news from the racing world will shared right here!

2/1/07 Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival

West coast car enthusiasts, racing fans, hot rodders and racers are gearing up for the 2007 Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival, scheduled for March 21st through 25th, 2007 in Oakhurst, California, the southern gateway to Yosemite National Park. This has become such a big deal that the Madera County Board of Supervisors has declared that week in March to be "Official Madera County Film Festival Week".

Featuring automotive related films from the 40’s through today, the film festival offers something for everyone, hard to find films such as Mickey Rooney’s 1949 “Big Wheel”, the original “The Fast and The Furious” from 1955 and more than 20 others.

Film legend James Garner will be the recipient of the “Southern Yosemite Lifetime Achievement Award” for his work in automotive films. Both “Grand Prix” and his documentary “The Racing Scene” will be screened and drivers from his racing team, Scooter Patrick and Davey Jordan, will be on hand to sign autographs and tell stories about their racing careers. One of their original Corvettes, now restored by Jim Herlinger of Santa Clara, will also be displayed.

The Lee Iacocca Foundation for diabetes research has selected the Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival as one of the places to present the Lee Iacocca Award,  to be given to someone who best epitomizes both the automotive sport and community service.

Of special interest to car enthusiasts will be one of the few screenings of “The Sound of Speed”, a short film about Lance Reventlow and his Scarab racing project. Director Bruce Kessler, who premiered this at the Cannes Film Festival in 1962, will be at the festival to discuss the making of this film and his own racing career.

Pontiac fans will appreciate 2004’s “The Last Ride”, starring Dennis Hopper and featuring a variety of Pontiacs, and the director, Guy Bee, who will be in attendance, speaking about the making of the film.

John Schneider, of "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Smallville" fame, will be introducing his latest film, Collier & Co. and showing off his latest Dodge Charger.

The critically acclaimed and never before screened in California, “Dirt”, a documentary about stock car racing at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Texas and a winner at the Austin Film Festival, will be one of the Friday night featured films. Director Jeff Bowden will introduce the film and describe all that went into making it.

For Corvette buffs, Dick Guldstrand, known as “Mr. Corvette” for his long involvement with the marque and success in racing, will be here to sign autographs, showcase his latest book and show of his special edition Corvette ZO-6.

Automotive authors will be here too. Harold Osmer, best known for his definitive book on long gone race tracks of Southern California, will attend, not only signing books but giving a brief talk about Southern California racetracks and displaying a variety of automotive books from Autobooks-Aerobooks of Burbank. "Landspeed Louise" Noeth will be on hand signing her definitive Bonneville book and more are expected. Tom Madigan, author of "Edelbrock", will be avilable for autographs and book signings.

From Cannonball Run II, Richard Kiel, who portrayed a Mitsubishi engineer in the film, will be here, again signing autographs and talking to fans.

With so many veterans of racing at the now defunct Riverside International Raceway attending, it’s only fitting that a Riverside Raceway Retrospective be presented; with a short film of the 1965 Times Grand Prix and stories of racing at Riverside, from veterans who ran the first event in 1957 to those who ran the last in 1989.

The recent death of Formula One great Clay Regazzoni has prompted a brief remembrance program, with a special showing of the film of the 1974 Grand Prix season, where Clay, driving for Ferrari, finished second in the world championship to Emerson Fittipaldi. Speaking about Clay will be Chuck Jones, former partner in the Ensign Formula One team and Howden Ganley, former BRM Formula One driver.

One of the best things about the film festival is that the proceeds all go to charity. From the Lee Iacocca Foundation to the Children’s Miracle Network to worthy causes in the Oakhurst area, everyone benefits from this event. A complete list of charities is on the film festival website, www.southernyosemite.com

The film festival week also includes displays of racing, vintage, antique and exotic cars, automobilia and souvenir vendors, an auction of racing memorabilia, celebrity autograph signings featuring stars and well known racers and more, limited access cocktail parties, wine tasting from local wineries and other auto related events. Exhibitors will include the AAA Motorsports Experience, the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Norcalkarters.com, Madera Speedway, Riverside Motorsports Park and a variety of car lubs from around California.

And when you can’t watch any more movies, tours of Yosemite National Park, ski outings, golf tournaments, train rides on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railway, hosted trips to the local Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino and a variety of family oriented events are available.

Tickets are now available online at the film festival website, www.southernyosemite.com or through the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce at 559.683.7766. Ticket quantities are limited as only a few hundred people can be accommodated. Special accommodation packages with local hotels are also available.

Oakhurst is 4 ½ hours driving time north of Los Angeles and 3 hours east of the San Francisco Bay area.  Airline service through Fresno Yosemite International Airport is 45 minutes away.

For complete information visit the Film Festival website, www.southernyosemite.com or contact the Oakhurst Chamber of Commerce, online at www.oakhurstchamber.com or call 559.683.7766.

Rotax Max Expands its Norcal Series

There has been feedback in the past couple of years to have more Rotax
races in Northern California. Well due to the efforts of Ron Bennett and the Dixon Kart Club, the Northern California Rotax Max Challenge Series will be expanded by 2 more races, starting with a Dixon race on March 18. Two more
additional races will be run at Dixon on May 6 and September 2. The August 18 race at Infineon will not be a Rotax Max Challenge rave, but will still be run as part of the Jim Russell series. The three Dixon races will run as part of the Dixon Club race on that day. More details on Saturday practice availability, entry fees and race day format for the Dixon races still to come. With these 3 race day additions, there will be actually two Rotax Series championships in Northern California:

 Rotax Max Challenge Series

 Dixon - March 18
 Infineon - April 21
 Dixon - May 6
 Infineon - May 12
 Infineon - June 30
 Infineon - July 14
 Dixon - Sept 2
 Infineon - Sept 15
 Infineon - Oct 20

The championship will be a best 7 of 9 races, more specifically the best 2 or 3 races at Dixon and the best 5 of 6 races at Infineon. It sounds confusing, but simply put 2 races are allowed to be dropped, one at Dixon and one at Infineon. The Aug 18 Infineon race will not count toward the Rotax Max Challenge Series Championship since it conflicts with the Rotax Nationals on the
same weekend.

The Jim Russell Karting Championship Series - Rotax Classes

 All at Infineon Raceway
 April 21
 May 12
 June 30
 July 14
 Aug 18
 Sept 15
 Oct 20

Best 6 of 7 races count toward the championship.

 Other Rotax news:

 1. Marin Karting is working on a sponsorship package for the Challenge Series and should have an announcement soon.
2. The driver qualification for the Rotax Nationals will be up to each local series in 2007. I will put a plan together with Marin Karting and will have it out for all to see within a couple of weeks. Each local series will be given only so many driver entries to the Nationals, at this time I do not what number of driver entries will be given to The Norcal Series. More details soon. Stay tuned to Norcal Karters for further information!

2/1/07 New Proposed Legislation in Oregon

Two Oregon Senators introduced Senate Bill 49 recently for legislative consideration.

In effect this bill would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 12 to operate an ATV on public land (this means by statute Motorcycles, Quads, and Go-Karts). This bill would also limit those 12-16 years of age to a maximum 90cc ATV (Again motorcycle, quad, or go-kart) on public land.

Again this is a very poorly written bill and does not define the term ATV (Quad in most people's world), so it goes to the Oregon legal definition of ATV (ie off road motorcyucle, quad or go-kart)

Find the legislators and express your opinion:

2/4/07 NCK Season Opener- Button Willow

The information packet and race entry forms, for the February 17, 2007 NCK season opener at Buttonwillow Raceway (road course), have been posted on the NCK website. Pre-enter to save money and eliminate standing in line.

Special Pricing - This is a "$100 All You Can Race" event.  That means if you have the equipment and the stamina, you can enter and run in every event during the day, for the price of the first entry. Add $25 if you wait and submit your entry form at the gate.

If you were an NCK member last season and ran "ALL" of the NCK races in 2006 (excluding the IKF RRGNs), NCK will waive your race entry fee, for the season opener at Buttonwillow. If you entered and ran at all of the races, just write in "I'm racing for FREE," on your race pre-entry form.

Note:  All participants must have an IKF Road Race License (or must apply for one) and a 2007 NCK Membership ($40 annual membership fee).

Kart numbers and transponders are pre-tech items.  Transponders will be available to rent, for anyone that doesn't own one.

Changes For 2007:  IKF is now requiring that ALL  weights must be white in color, to create a contrast when on the track.

As of right now, there is no practice day scheduled for Friday 2/16/07.  But, this is subject to change, as the track may choose to open for practice, if they are unable to rent the track to another club or private party.  Note:  If this takes place, it will likely be on short notice.

Blue Max Kart Club Swap Meet and Work Day a Success!

Blue Max Kart Club held a work day and swap meet this past Saturday. The day was a success drawing over 100 drivers and inviting in nearly one hundred people for the swap meet. The work day included refurbishment of the bathrooms, podium and the scoring tower. Removed old hay bails and cleaned up around the pits and playground in preparation for the clubs first club race this Sunday.

The swap meet also helped draw race fanatics as racers were selling old equipment and parts as the new stuff was being shook down on the track. Scribner barriers had been arranged along the backstretch to replace the hay bales. The big boys of IKF were out as well for testing as they are getting ready for the IKF race held  March 10-11 to open the season at Blue Max. Names like the Emmicks and Vasquez's were in Attendance as well as California Kartworlds Paula McCallister who is now supporting the Clubs racers with parts throughout the 2007 season.

Blue Max is scheduled to run their first Club Race of 2007 next weekend on Sunday, however weather is permitted as rain is in the forecast. Stay tuned to Norcal Karters for updates on next weekends race.

2/1/07 Infineon Date Change

Well, what would a new racing season be without a schedule change. The June 9-10 Jim Russell 2 day race weekend needs to be changed to June 30-July 1.
The reason for this date change is because the 3rd Annual Kartsport Grand Prix will take over the June 9-10 date. I do not have any details on
classes and such, but as soon I get the advance notice of information, I
will send it along. Given that the Stars National Series will not be
coming to Infineon Raceway this year, the Kartsport GP will be the only premier event at Infineon in 2007 and should have a number of classes that will allow our local Russell Series and Norcal drivers to showcase their driving skills.

More Rule Changes for 2007

Additional rule changes for the 2007 are as follows:

1) Tire change for 80 shifter classes will be the Bridgestone YJL tire. The YJL tire is a fairly softer tire then the commonly used YDS however no tire softener will be allowed.

2)Shiny manifolds supplied with the leopard engines early in distribution will no longer be legal. All manifolds must be from conventional shipments. The reason being is the shiny manifold was no longer available and gave those who used them a performance advantage.

3)Carbon Fiber Reeds will no longer be legal. The only Reeds allowed will be the conventional reeds supplied with the engine and must say IAME on them. Thickness shall .30 with a .02 tolerance.

More changes to come as they are released. Stay Tuned.

The work party will be used to repair/fix-ups of the facility. For those members or non members who participate in the work party will be granted a free practice afternoon run. Members who choose not to participate in the work party will be charged to run that day.

And one final note- don't forget chest protectors for Jr. drivers a new rule for 2007. All lead weights MUST be painted white. This includes cans, or any form of weight. This is a new safety rule recently approved by the IKF national board.

Stockton Club Receiving a Facelift

This past weekend Stockton Kart Track had some noticeable changes. Some of the turns had a type of seal put down. The seal had filled the the crevices in the asphalt and had seemed to fill a few of the slight bumps. The track is currently testing the new seal and is looking to make some more significant changes in the near future. Chris is looking into an asphalt grinder to grind down the sever bumps and covering the track with sealer. Changes looking to take place in the Spring. Track is interested in anyone who owns or has access to an asphalt grinder. To experience the changes of the sealer come out any Wednesday night for Weenie Wednesday from 3pm to 10pm. For information call 209-595-2200.
