1-1-10 2009 Norcal Karters Sr Driver Rankings Top 3 Every Year NorcalKarters.com compiles all the stats from Club Races and Regional programs from the Norcal and western Reno Kart tracks and uses a mathematical process to find the Areas top ranked Drivers. This year the equation was changed a little in the fact it now offers a drop for drivers. Every six races counted now includes one drop. The points are determined on the number of Karts in the class, for example: in a 10 kart field the winner would receive ten points; the driver finishing last would receive 1 point. For Gold Rush, IKF Region 11, and Pro Kart races the drivers will receive double points for the higher level of competition, for example: if there are 10 karts in the class, the winner would receive 20 points, while the driver finishing last would receive 2 points. In order to qualify for the top ten, drivers must have competed in 8 or more races before the drop. The points from each race would be compiled together minus the dropped races for low finishes, then the total would get divided by the number of races run, finding the average points score for the driver. This particular method rewards the driver scoring good finishes against tough fields with high kart counts.
The Sr Ranks in Norcal has been filled with heavy battles throughout the tracks in 2009. Battles that only exist in Norcal, those that create rivalries on and off the track. The Sr driver with the third ranking in 2009 was Emmick Cobra’s Jesse Gwin. Gwin the 2007 NorcalKarters.com Driver of the year did some of his biggest battles in Sr Superbox. Jesse was tied for third over the fourth ranked driver, however won the tie breaker for most wins. Jesse had 8 wins that included 4 top 5’s in the 11 counted races for the rankings. He had 234 total points with an average point score of 21.3 a race.
The Number two ranked driver was Leading Edge’s Brian Gallagher. Gallagher had a breakout year with Leading Edge showing that the Lodi Company can build horsepower with the best of Builders. Gallagher only had 8 counted races, and perhaps bettered his ranking compared to Gwin’s as Gwin competed in the IKF series more, while Gallagher raced a few clubs and focused on the Gold Rush series. 5 wins and 3 top 5’s, Brian scored a total of 184 points with an average point score of 23.0 per race.
The 2009 NorcalKarters.com #1 ranked driver is no surprise. Leading Edge’s Brett Felkins. Felkins flew the Leading Edge Flag high in 2009 and gathered an impressive record from Tracks to series. Many big races were won by Felkins, however many of them were not eligible for the rankings. Moreover it didn’t affect his ranking. 10 races were counted for 246 points. 3 Wins and 5 top 5’s, Brett Felkins is the most deserving of holding this ranking. A Pro Kart Regular in the star studded field of Tag Senior’s, Brett Felkins is NorcalKarters.com #1 ranked Sr driver in 2009!

1-1-01 2009 Norcal Karters Masters Driver Rankings Top 3 Every Year NorcalKarters.com compiles all the stats from Club Races and Regional programs from the Norcal and western Reno Kart tracks and uses a mathematical process to find the Areas top ranked Drivers. This year the equation was changed a little in the fact it now offers a drop for drivers. Every six races counted now includes one drop. This particular method rewards the driver scoring good finishes against tough fields with high kart counts.
The Masters division is always a favorite as the older drivers of Karting put on some of the best races. Ranking third in the Masters division is MMS Racing Engines Cody McKinney. McKinney did his work in the IKF Series and the Reno Kart track. Cody had 76 total points on only 7 counted races. He had 1 win and 3 top 5’s. He had an average point score of 10.9 per race.
Ranking second in 2009 for the Masters division was Emmick Cobra’s Tony Rodriguez. Tony had five wins and 3 top 5’s in 2009 with a point total of 81. Rodriguez got most his points in the Gold Rush series. Rodriguez is perhaps the most consistent front runner in the Masters divisions. He had a 11.6 average points per race.
The 2009 #1 ranked NorcalKarters.com Driver in the Masters division in the second Consecutive year is Mat Kattanek. Kattanek is one of the most focused Drivers in the pits. Doing the majority of his work in the rankings at the Gold Rush series, Kattanek put in a consistent season with seven counted races and 6 of them were top 5’s. 84 total points and a 12.0 average point score per race. In 2009, Mat Kattanek is NorcalKarters.com #1 ranked driver in the Masters Division.

1-1-10 2009 Norcal Karters Jr 1 Driver Rankings Top 3 Every Year NorcalKarters.com compiles all the stats from Club Races and Regional programs from the Norcal and western Reno Kart tracks and uses a mathematical process to find the Areas top ranked Drivers. This year the equation was changed a little in the fact it now offers a drop for drivers. Every six races counted now includes one drop. The points are determined on the number of Karts in the class, for example: in a 10 kart field the winner would receive ten points; the driver finishing last would receive 1 point. This particular method rewards the driver scoring good finishes against tough fields with high kart counts.
The top three drivers did battle all year in the Jr 1 classes. Several drivers went head to head while others acted as sleepers pouncing silently and taking advantage of others misfortunes. Sitting third in the Jr 1 rankings is Emmick Cobra’s Sonny Cervelli. Sonny had 10 races counted from the IKF series alone out of the 12 total counted. Cervelli could very well be Number one with his season stats. Lucky for the other drivers but not so much for Sonny, The 2-cycle IKF Grand Nationals were not counted. Sonny was a sleeper in 2008 in the driver rankings as he did battle at Dixon to hone his skills. The Kid crossed the line first two times at the Reno Nationals and earned himself 3 wins in Norcal with 10 top 5’s. Sonny had an average of 20.3 points when he raced and was perhaps the biggest “ladies man” in the Jr 2 ranks after his decleration at the 2-cycle IKF Grand Nationals on the podium after what was believed as robbing the driver of two Duffies, “It’s cool, the Chicks still dig me!”
In the second position of the Jr 1 Rankings was quite the surprise. Cambrian’s Noah Hermansen. Noah didn’t have any wins to speak of for 2010, however when it came to consistency at big races with heavy Kart counts the Birel Driver was at the front of the pack. 7 top 5’s and a very good showing at the IKF races, Noah Hermansen had 11 races counted to his ranking and was in contention to win a few championships for 2009. The young shoe will be moving up to Jr 2 in 2010 to go along with a very talented Jr 2 lineup of other drivers moving up.
The number 1 ranked driver in 2009 in Jr 1 is Hunter Corbitt. Corbitt had 13 races counted more then the three ranked below him, however his outings were solid, 8 top 5’s and 9 top 10’s Corbitt showed that hanging silent in third gets you the number 1 ranking. With two wins to his credit, if there were bonus points rewarded for laps led compared to laps run, Corbitt would had and even bigger lead in the rankings. The young gun also won the Stars of Karting Finale at Infineon (not counted) while doing most his damage at the Gold Rush series. If there is one modest kid that listens to his father and works hard for his talents, its Hunter Corbitt without question. Hunter Corbitt is the 2009 Number one ranked driver in Jr 1!

1-1-01 2009 Norcal Karters Jr 2 Driver Rankings Top 3 Every Year NorcalKarters.com compiles all the stats from Club Races and Regional programs from the Norcal and western Reno Kart tracks and uses a mathematical process to find the Areas top ranked Drivers. The points from each race would be compiled together minus the dropped races for low finishes, then the total would get divided by the number of races run, finding the average points score for the driver. This particular method rewards the driver scoring good finishes against tough fields with high kart counts.
The top three in Jr 2 were the closest in History of the NorcalKarters.com Driver Rankings. Ranked third was Leading Edge’s Kathryn Cornell. Kathryn showed her skills in both Pro Kart and Gold rush and earned a big win at Prairie City for the Gold Rush opener and had 3 wins total on the year. She had 6 top 5’s to her credit and maintained a high Kart count in the events she chose to run. The driver was tied with the second position but was bumped to third because of number of wins. Cornell is developing into an aggressive talent in Norcal, Look to watch Kathryn progress further in 2010.
Ranking second in the 2009 Jr 2 Rankings was Kiel Spaulding. Spaulding ran a few different brands of karts in 2009 but it never affected his results. 7 wins to the young drivers credit, it’s a shame other races weren’t counted with Kiel’s National driving results. 6 top 5’s for Kiel, he could have very easily been ranked Number one a rightly so if he was. Bottom line, he was beat out by the Gold Rush series. High kart counts get the number one ranking, and Gold Rush simply had them. Kiel Spaulding will continue to grow to a National and maybe internationally recognized Karting Talent.
Ranking first in Jr 2 is the first time repeat #1 ranking in Leading Edges Luis Tyrrell. Luis is another driver that started the season on one brand of chassis, and ended on another. In 2008 Luis was ranked in the top spot in the Jr 1 Division. Luis only had one win to speak of for the counted races of the rankings, however 7 top 5’s, high kart counts, and a very good average finish of 20.7, Luis was put to the top of the driver rankings by consistency. One of the few drivers that were hampered by the newly adopted drop rule, it didn’t affect his end result as the #1. Luis Tyrrell is the 2009 Jr 2 #1 ranked Driver!

1-1-10 2009 Season Wrap- Cody Hodgson
It has been a
whirlwind ride for Escalon, California HS senior and racer
Cody Hodgson since summer. Along with racing the ProKart
North and South series, Cody spent a week in Ocala Florida
prior to school starting last August, testing and training
with the Ocala Gran Prix Team. In mid September he would
join their team at the Rotax Grand Nationals in Norman,
Oklahoma to come home with the victory trophy and the
National Championship title in the DD2 class! That title
earned him a spot on the US team at the Rotax World Finals
in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt in December. From that point on
it's been nonstop racing into the holidays for Cody. He
finished up his Pro Kart Challenge North season at Infineon
as the champion in the S1 class and then back to
Orlando/Ocala for more testing for the World Finals.
Returning from Florida, Cody flew straight to Las Vegas to
meet up with his dad and the Tony Kart team to race at the
Supernationals. After some "not so great luck" and finishing
13th at the Supernats, Cody was ready to move on to the next
big race which would be the Granja Viana 500 in Sao Paulo,
Brazil for the 2nd year in a row. Cody was chosen last March
through Florida Winter Tour to represent the US again at the
Granja Viana 500 on December 5th. (which was also his 18th
birthday!) So Cody and his parents flew to Sao Paulo the day
after Thanksgiving, spent a couple days with Eduardo Martins
(Tony Kart) and family and then it was full speed racing
ahead. |
