3-26-07 Stockton Club Race #2

Saturday Stockton Motorplex held their second club race of the season. I got to the track around 8:45 as the drivers meeting was taking place. You could tell the racers were happy and ready as there were many smiles and laughs throughout the crowd.

Racing Started with the Kid Karts. Early on Michael Brauer held the lead. As laps went on Brauer continued to set the pace with the top six in tow. Around halfway Yanez took the point shuffling Brauer back to fourth. Repar and Brauer would later mount a challenge on the top spot but as lapped traffic came into play, Yanez showed his experience and gapped the two, and went on to win.

In Puma Kelsey Nillson debut a new chassis in a Tony Kart. Kelsey obviously loved her new Tony, She dominated the day. Points leader  Joanne Simien had a rough day with a 2nd heat DNF, however she rebounded well to come away with a 3rd. Jr. Comer proved to be a classic battle as the top four were in a heated battle throughout. Jennifer Simien led early, however Valles and Tevis took over and Valles seemed to control a close battle. Mike Graves qualified pole but DNF'd the first heat and fought hard the rest of the day to get third at the line.

HPV-2 debut for the first time this season. This Engine package provides for great racing. Loucks won the first heat, Felkins won the second heat, then Kathryn Cornell put the smackdown on the two and ran away with a dominant win. Aldo Freggiaro won National Cup Novice, and John Modderman got the National Cup Masters. National Cup Light put on a good show. Brian Hill got pole, Geoff Shaw blew up and had to start from the back, Boswell Got DQ'd in the heat for no Gas cap. Shaw crashed hard on the opening lap and would go to the hospital but would be okay. Boswell would spin out the field, run down the leader, make the winning pass on the last lap, only to be DQ'd for rough driving handing the win over to Brian Hill.

National Cup Grand Masters would provide an Epic battle, Louie Ettlin would run a commanding day, however when the Main came Gerald Herrera would get a winning setup. He would come from third and run down Ettlin to make the winning pass with four to go. In 100cc National Cup Jon Ban would lead throughout the day, but when the main came Kevin Knight took the lead early only to lead a freight train of the top five. Knight would later break and give the lead to Ban the Man, and the win. Clips from the weekend coming soon and the points as well. See full results below.

3-27-07 Prairie City Club Race #1

Prairie City held there season opener this weekend drawing a full pit of drivers, some from IKF warming up for the coming weekend and others to earn points towards an end of the year championship.

Hpv-1 took to the track, and after a few starts racing was underway. Jon Norris got the lead early and never looked back. In HPV-2 racing was great. Brendan Phinny got the lead early and set the pace. timothy Weddles setup came in and he took command with four laps to go. End the end Weddle got the win but skipped tech earning a DQ and handing the win over to Phinny. HPV-3 was nose to bumper throughout. Ryan Phinny dogged Neil Woodford for the whole race. Phinny had the straight away speed and held the top spot for the win. Greg Guting got the HPV-4 win.

The 9 kart YF-200 class was up next. Boy has this class grown. Billy Bowerman was the man in this one. He checked out early and never was contested, instead he ran down the HPV-4's and terrorised them. Jr. Comer was up next, however johnny Norris continued his dominance in the Jr classes and got this win as well. Stephen Nagai set the pace throughout Formula 80 masters, however held off the late fight from Tony Rodriguez.

Formula 80 Limited was up next. The start was wild on this one. Anthony Valerio got the whole shot. Trevor Schmid made a dive in two for second. Schmid got Anthony in the back section and Valerio Spun out allowing Trevor to walk. 3-12-07 Race Report-IKF Region 11 Opener

The Weekend started Wednesday when trailers began to fill up the pits out at the Davis Facility. Friday Morning the pits were full, crews and drivers were preparing, and if you stopped and listened, you heard the greetings from racers throughout the pit area of not seeing there fellow competitors throughout the off season.

Friday Practice was hectic. Karts filled up the track and as the day went on, the club began to split up the sessions. Shifters had their own session, as well as the National Cup classes, and even the HPV's.

Saturday Morning Race director Tom Halbasch informed everyone of the race to Hawaii, welcomed everyone back from the winter, introduced the new board members, the new tech director Tim Paul, and got right down to business in lecturing the drivers of clean driving. For anyone who knows the Davis track would agree that rubbing is way of racing at the facility.

Jr. Comer was the first to take to the track. Kiel Spaulding would began his dominant weekend by taking pole with a lap of 39.611 which is flying for a comer and beating 2nd position .225. There was no contest for the win in this one, Kiel ran away with both the heat and the main. Jon Norris put in hard fight for the 2nd position followed by Kyle Kaiser, Dain DaVivro, and Austin Dement rounding out the top five.

Next up was 125 National Cup. In Qualifying Michael Rojas originally got the pole but was DQ'd in tech handing the pole over to DJ Agee for his first in IKF competition. In the heat race Corse Karts Cody Hodgson had a mechanical failure collecting MMI's Chris Scribner leaving two of the Norcal Big Boys starting from the back. In the main both Hodgson and Scribner got good starts, however unfortunately the first three laps would eliminate three of the top runners in Hodgson lap one, Emmick's Cory Gwin lap two, and Yazco Motorsports Michael Yaziembiak lap three. Scribner made a great run through the field before getting together with Rojas with four laps to go ending his day. In the end Emmick's Jesse Gwin ran away with lead to put on a dominant Performance for his first 125 National Cup Race with DJ Agee getting his best finish with a second, Jason Toft made a great run through the field for 3rd, followed by Will Martindale, and MMS Karting's Mike Botelho Jr. in fifth.

The next race was the always fierce Formula 80 Limited, Anthony Valerio qualified pole with 36.318. Anthony ran wire to wire but not without a fight. All day Robert Towne and Trevor Schmid put the pressure on Valerio but were unable to get by. As the laps wound down in the main, Trevor put the pressure on Valerio prompting Valerio to block the last lap, as Trevor tried to setup Anthony to pass him on the backstretch, Towne snuck to the inside putting Trevor back to third and Valerio with the uncontested victory and the weekends first for MMI. Adam Booker got fourth while Kevin Tanaka finished fifth.

Super Sportsman Heavies took to the track next with Bryan Stephenson taking the pole with a 38.481 and putting over a half a second between himself and second. Bryan swept the class with the pole, and victories in both the heat and the main. Brett George got second with DQ's allowing a and non finisher in Joshua Veloz coming away with third.

Jr Superbox had a great turnout. David Vasquez got the pole edging out Timothy Weddle, and Neil Alberico. Alberico made the move for the win in the corkscrew on Vasquez but would be DQ'd for contact, handing the win over to Cambrian Karts David Vasquez. Donavon Wheeler came home second, while Ryan Garcia, Bradley Genseal, and Savannah Sanchez rounded out the top five.

Sunday was a new day, However was started the same as Tom Halbasch expressed his displeasure in the wrecks and carnage the day before. Tom must have put the fear in the drivers because Sunday all and all, provided very clean, very close racing.

HPV-1 would take to the track first as California Kartworlds Kiel Spaulding continued the dominance from the day before in qualifying pole. Kiel would again run away with the heat and the main. Great run by Spaulding. This kid definitely has the potential. Grant Ereth got second while Jon Norris got a hard fought third. Austin Dement was fourth and Justin Cole fifth.

National Cup Masters was a good race all through the day. Glenn McKinnon got pole. Ray Zarick won the heat and was DQ'd for blocking and had to start the main from the back. Carl Freese would lose a nose and get the meatball, Glenn McKinnon would blow an engine, but it was Go-Racings "Point of Impact" Matt Kattanek getting the win. Matt was challenged early but held tough for the win. California Kartworlds Bill McCallister got second, and "Crazy" Ray Zarick came home third.

The next old man class was Formula 80 Masters. Cody McKinney got pole. McKinney was the stud of the day. Cody got the win by a big margin. But the drive was by Ben Fisher who qualified 8th, but made his run to 3rd in the main. Steve Dow in his Orange machine got 2nd, Jay Neely was fourth and Boyd Ferry was fifth.

Sr. Superbox was next up and Bryan Stephenson also picked up where he left off the day before in the heavy's and qualified pole. In the main Bryan got the early lead and never looked back. Todd Wallace fell back early in third but setup came in late as he ran down Joshua Veloz for second, and made the pass with just two to go in the hairpin. Wallace got second and Veloz in third. New Kid on the block Kiel Bonetti got fourth and J. Figone got fifth.

The surprising class of the weekend was the 2007 addition of HPV-2. 19 karts turned out to Davis this weekend. Colby Potts got the pole with a 36.735 just a few hundredths over second. The heat race was epic as Potts led them down to the green. David Vasquez led briefly but Weddle would get the win. The start of the main was incredible. Vasquez and Weddle were the front row. Vasquez held the outside line and got the inside going into turn two. Weddle was stuck on the outside and got shuffled back to seventh. Vasquez opened up a gap early and never looked back. Cambrian Karts David Vasquez completed the sweep to take wins in the most competitive junior classes. Neil Alberico finished second, Colby Potts fell to third, Timothy Weddle got a hard fought fourth, and Nick Viscusi III got fifth.

Last of the weekend was the 100 National Cup. This class has grown over the past few years to become a battle for the win every race. The top three of Gwin, Scribner, and Hodgson was the race. Gwin got the pole and the heat race win. Scribner was off pole for the start, and got the whole shot on Gwin to turn one. Despite running laps faster than qualifying, Scribner was definitely dogging  Gwin and Hodgson, As laps were winding down, Gwin put the pressure on Scribner but went wide to allow Hodgson by for second, and that's the way they finished. Scribner, Hodgson, Gwin, and Kevin Knight fourth. In Tech Scribner Was DQ'd handing the win over to Hodgson, however, the DQ was protested and is still in review.

Next stop for IKF Norcal Region 11 is Prairie City at the end of the month. Stay tuned to www.norcalkarters.com for future event info including Fast Track Registration form.
