3-18-08 IKF Region 11 Opener day #2
| After the Weather played
tricks on the racers and track alike on Saturday switching
from cloud cover to sunshine, Sunday the Sky would remain
clear. However there were wind gusts throughout the day
which led to dust and sand occasionally getting blown onto
the track. First up on the day was HPV-1 Jr and Kartel's Luis Tyrell grabbed the pole with a 39.122. Tyrell was determined after Day 1 as he proved to be the man to beat. Luis won the heat race uncontested by 6.6 seconds over Kartworlds Cole Davis. Tyrell did the same winning the Main Event. Bordogna's Kyle Kaiser was second and Davis third. Iame Cup masters took to the track and Mat Kattanek got fast time with a 36.168. Mat won the club race opener the weekend before, and continued his quickness on Sunday. Mat won the Heat race but MMI's Kevin Knight looked like he would bring the battle to Mat in the Final. The start of the Final had Emmick's Lance Grimm pushing Kattanek to the front and himself to second. Grimm would keep Knight behind him for most of the race allowing Kattanek to roll to the victory. Two laps to go Knight made the pass on Grimm to come home second leaving Grimm for third. Sr. Superbox Light was on the track with a dismal 4 karts. Bixler went wire to wire for the win. Jr TAG saw a first time IKF Winner. Cody Kay got fast time with 35.701. In the Heat Cody Kay led early. MMI's Kelsey Nilsson ran down Kay and made short work as she grabbed the lead to victory. Starting pole in the main, Nilsson got the lead by the first turn and drove away for an uncontested victory. This was Kelsey's first IKF Win. Kay was second and Ryan Garcia third. Formula 80 Masters was up next and Rick Gutzke made his IKF return by grabbing the pole with a 36.844. Gutzke got the Heat race win, but Emmick's Tony Rodriguez was charging from the back as Tony never got a lap in qualify and started from the back. The main looked to be a good race, but Gutzke ran to an easy victory as Rodriguez went out on lap 6. MMS Racing Engines Cody McKinney was second and Emmick's Chuck Hastings third. IAME Cup Sr. was on track and Daniel Moffet got pole with 35.266. In the heat Moffet faded fast into the clutches of Ram Mechanical's Cody Hodgson and Kartel's Neil Alberico. On the start of the Main Kartel's Chris Scribner got the lead from Hodgson and looked as if he would walk away similar to day 1. Scribner faded fast and by midway Hodgson took control of the race. Cody Hodgson cruised to victory. Scribner was second and Alberico third. Last up was HPV-2 Jr. Kartel's Brendan Phinny got pole with a 36.495. Phinny was tough all weekend and rolled to both the heat and Main event victories. The battle was for second. Kartworlds Marvin Gardner held the spot early but teamate Kiel Spaulding battled to take it over. Gardner brought the fight back but MMI's Kelsey Nilsson snuck by to take over third. The battle for third began and Spaulding ran off. Nilsson and Gardner traded the position a few times before Nilsson got it for good with a few laps remaining. Phinny, Spaulding, and Nilsson were the top three. Next race for the IKF Region 11 Series is at Shasta Kart Club in Redding CA April 12-13. NorcalKarters.com will be there for news updates, pictures, podcast and swag. |
3-17-08 IKF Region 11 opener Day #1
| The Norcal IKF Region 11
Series made their first stop this weekend at Blue Max Kart
Club in Davis CA. Originally scheduled for Infineon Raceway
in Sonoma, the Norcal Board opted to move the race to Blue
Max. The forecast called for rain throughout Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday. There was a light sprinkle Friday with
some Saturday night rain, but as for racing goes, this
weekend went down with some of the best racing an IKF opener
has seen in years. Adding to that the entries were up over
last years opener by twenty. New classes for 2008 and a new
Norcal Board, the 2008 Region 11 season kicked off with an
explosion! The first class up for 2008 were the Kid Karts. Jerett Tachovsky got pole with 49.450. In the Heat race Michael Brauer brought a hard charge late to get the win from the 5th starting position. In the main however the driver to beat was Chloe St. George. Leading most of the laps, St. George looked to be the winner but with a few laps to go, Brauer again made a hard charge to pass St. George and get the victory. Brauer wouldn't make it past tech, bumping St. George up for the winner. Vincent Duggan was second, and Jeremy Kay third.
Next up was Jr Comer. 20 Karts to the class and Bordogna's Kyle Kaiser got fast time with a 39.694. Kartel's Luis Tyrell put the heat on Kaiser in the Heat race but Kaiser prevailed for the pole sitter in the main. Kartworlds Cole Davis gave Kaiser a good push on the start of the main hanging Tyrell out for third. Tyrell would struggle to pass Davis and this would allow Kaiser to open up a big lead. Hard Charging Austin Dement from the MMS pit had to come from the back because of not completing a lap in qualifying. DeMent would pass both Davis and Tyrell for second. Kyle Kaiser was the winner, Austin DeMent and Luis Tyrell third.
IKF TAG took to the track and Kartel's Chris Scribner put it on pole with a 35.192. Scribner got a good push on the start of the heat from MMS Racing Engines Mike Botelho. Scribner got the easy win in the Heat for the pole position for the Main. Scribner again got the push in the main and cruised to victory. MMI's Cody Hodgson was second and Mike Botelho third.
Shifter 80 Sr was up next and Two Time Champion Robert Towne from Fastech Racing got the pole with 36.513. With an all Fastech Racing Front row, Towne got the hole shot over teamate Sean Forbes in the heat for an easy victory. In the main, Towne Looked to cruise once again but Emmick's Colton Filkill stayed close, but Towne got the victory. Filkill was second, and Kartel's Adam Booker came home third.
14 karts in the HPV-4 class and Kartel's Brendan Phinny got pole with a 36.264. Phinny was tough all day, winning the heat to start pole in the Main. On the start of the Final Phinny again got the hole shot. This time Leading Edge's Brett Felkins stayed close enough to take advantage of any mistakes, but Phinny was flawless and got the victory. Felkins was second and Cody Kay third.
Jr. Superbox only had 4 karts. Kay was the pole sitter with a 37.906. Kay went wire to wire for the win. Ryan Garcia was second. 12 4-cycles came to play at Blue Max, and Brady Halbasch got the pole with a 40.070. Brady was the man to beat as he got both the Heat and Main event wins. Tyler Agan got fast time in the main with a 39.991 and finished a close second. Trevor Agan was the winner in the Jr 2 Animal and Jason Gentry won World Formula with Brent Redmond second.
Last on the day was another new class for 2008 and that was HPV-3 Sr. Kartel's Neil Alberico got pole with 36.915. Alberico won the Heat race but Fastech's Bryan Stephenson found some speed late and turned a faster lap time setting up a battle in the Final. Alberico got the holeshot on the start of the main but Stephenson stayed close. Stephenson mounted several challenges on Alberico, but the rookie held tough for his first Senior win. Progression: Cody Hodgson
|
After a great 2007 season Cody Hodgson is eager to get the 2008 season underway. It’s going to be Cody’s second year racing in the senior ranks and he is ready for any challenges that lie ahead. Cody will be racing for Gary Richter owner of Panavise Racing alongside teammate Brady Halbasch in IKF Region 11 TAG, Prokart series in S1 and occasional western stars of karting events. During the off season Cody put his full focus towards starting his jump into car racing. He attended the Skip Barber Racing School and a lapping day in a Skip Barber R/T2000. After doing so he was selected to be one of the 50 drivers to run in the Skip Barber Karting shootout. For four days Cody was involved in a variety of driving exercises and interviews with instructors. With not much experience in the car Cody showed strong improvement and the ability to keep working forward even after doing a BIG 360 in the famous turn 17 at 120 MPH. “words cant describe the feeling you get going into turn 17 at 120 MPH, it’s the true definition of driving on the edge.” Along with Cody’s extensive karting schedule he is going to try to fit in a few Skip Barber Regional races and a few test days along with a few races in a late model stock car. For more info on Cody’s racing schedule and his new on track driver development program checkout CodyHodgsonRacing.com

Jr 1-2 Cycle was next and Cole Davis got the pole. Kartworld's Hunter Corbitt gave Davis a good push on the start, and Davis would feel the pressure from Corbitt throughout the the race but would stand tough for the win. |
| This past weekend Stockton
Motorplex held the first club race of 2008. Originally
scheduled for last weekend, Stockton got the rain from
Mother Nature, and rescheduled the race for this last
Saturday. Butterflies were in the stomachs of every person
in the pits, whether it be Racer, Parent, crew Member, and
even the Announcer, as the first Race for 2008 at Stockton
was imminent. First up were the Kid karts. Stockton one of the few tracks that allow blueprinted kid Karts. The Racing that was put on display by the young 5-8 year olds is amazing. Jarrett Gilmer led early. Michael Brauer and Vincent Duggan stayed close until the leaders hit lapped traffic, and the Experience of Gilmer paid off as he checked out. The battle was for second. Vincent Duggan was very aware of Brauer as twice a lap he checked his mirror to see where Brauer was. They switched positions a few times, but Duggan showed his power and held off Brauer for the position. Brauer came home third. Jr 1 Comer took to the track with a full field of 13 karts. Curt Paul sat on pole. Paul got the lead from the start but had the top six in tow. Joseph LaRosa and Alexis Lewis began to battle for fourth allowing the top three to break away. When the checkered flew MMI's Curt Paul got the victory Leading Edge's Blake Murdock second, and Cambrian's Justin Yanez third. Jr. Puma Sportsman provided a great show with Norcal's Jr 2 ace Brett Felkins under the Leading Edge Banner. Felkins dominated most of the day but got trained on the start falling to fourth. As Felkins attempted a pass on second and third, Felkins looped in turn one and fell to sixth 8 seconds behind the leader. Felkins looked out of contention for the win as MMI's Taylor Acamo had checked out on the field. Felkins caught the pack racing for second, and passed them one at a time. Five laps to go Felkins made his run towards Acamo. He made the pass for the lead with two to go and got the win. Acamo finished second, and Andrew Colombini was third. Jr. Sportsman's Matt Chase and Eric Turner raced with the Puma's and were very even on speed. Matt Chase was the Jr. Sportsman winner. The 60 cc Gazelle provided a great race as the top three all stayed in draft for the race. Stockton Hot Shoe Curt Paul however has been putting in quite the track time at Stockton as of late and showed his strengths. MMI's Curt Paul got the win. Austin Keller and Willy Defresne were the top three. New class for this year was the 125 National Cup Sumo. Carlos Cano won the 80 shifter division over Wayne "Mr. Ski Body" Bundy after he suffered a broken gear box. 125 National Cup Light carried some of the big boys in Norcal. The Diede's and Eady had a battle of their own for second. The 125 Stock Honda Shifter driver Bryan Eady from Leading Edge won the battle. Cody Diede and Troy Diede followed for the top four. 125 National Cup Masters had a full field with nine karts. Darren Leipelt got the pole, but from the start Kevin Knight got the lead and the pole position for the Final. From the green of the Main, MMI's Kevin Knight had the lead. Leipelt put the pressure on Knight, but that fueled his fire. Knight ran the protective line as Leipelt pushed him around the track. Knight got his first win in a 125 cc TAG. Leo Montero got bumped to second and Todd Jundt was third. John Modderman looked to be the man to beat in National Cup Grand Masters, started pole for the final after heat race wins. But Modderman spun on the start and collected another kart. Randy Medley got the lead on the start and never looked back, beating a stellar nine kart field. David Leipelt was second, Perry Cole third. HPV-2 Jr was last on the day, and Felkins again was looking tough. Wyatt Nilsson spun on the start ending his day. Kathryn Cornell from Leading Edge took her fight to teammate Brett Felkins. Felkins had none of it however, pulling out to a big lead with a few laps to go. Felkins got the win with Cornell second. The Gatorz Challenge Cup of the Americas Series came to
Infineon Raceway on Feb 24-26 to hold their second winter
race event. 89 drivers raced with 17 being from Norcal.
Like the first Gatorz race in late January, the weather had
a lot to do with the outcome of the races. Unfortunately,
the weather on the Sunday race schedule was so bad with high
winds and rain, the second race day of the weekend had to be
cancelled. But Norcal drivers still showed strong
performances on Saturday. In the Rotax Masters class, 3 Norcal drivers battled the best from Socal. There were a total of 18 entries with Reno's David Harwin taking pole. Harvin had trouble in the Prefinal as the rain came in and finished 10th. David Carlisle did well in the Prefinal and finished 6th. In the Main, Harwin recovered some to take 6th overall with Jay Brosius in 12th and Carlisle having troubles and had to settle for 17th. In the Rotax DD2 class, there were 4 entries. Last months double winner, Curtis Cooksey from Las Vegas took pole ahead of Norcal's Gregory Liefooghe, David Arnstein and David Palic. In the Prefinal Liefooghe took the win ahead of Arnstein and Cooksey. In the Main, Gregory repeated his Prefinal performance and won over Cooksey followed by Palic and Arnstein. In Junior Rotax, 5 Norcal drivers took on 22 Socal drivers. In his first Junior Rotax event, Sacramento's Kiel Spaulding took the pole over a talented field with Jordan Jadallah in 4th. In the Prefinal, Spaulding had trouble in the rain and fell back to 26th, but Jadallah went on and used put his home track knowledge to take the Prefinal win. Bobby Tift was 14th, Brody Zink 17th and Mikee Mejia had a DNS. In the Main, Jordan had to still for a third place finish, his second podium in a row for the series. Brody Zink continued his improving ways and took a very good 11th with Mejia coming from 27th to 13th by race end. Tift was 16th and Spaulding to settle for a DNF. In the Senior International class, 8 Norcal drivers were in the 28 kart field. In Qualifying, Nikola Radosaljevjich took 2nd, Ray Bustamante Jr 5th, Troy Castaneda 9th, Wes Phillips 10th. In the Prefinal, Castaneda and Phillips put on quiet a show as the race went from dry to wet early in the race. Troy took 1st ahead of Phillips with Nikola 7th and Nic LeDuc 11th after starting 25th. In the Main, Wes continued his rain mastery by taking the win with LeDuc working his way up to 3rd, Nikola improved to 6th, Jake Mottaz 16th, Carlos Calderon 20th, Bustamante 21st and Castendaneda took a DNF. This was Wes's second rain win out of 3 races and puts him in a good position in the series for the class championship.
