5-31-07 Brian Terrill dies at age 40

This past Saturday evening sadness spread through the karting community. A great gentlemen highly involved in the sport of karting, Brian Terrill past away while water skiing with his friends. Brian was 40 years old and survived with the company of his parents.

Brian worked with the karting community throughout Norcal. Working at Emmick Enterprises assembling karts, grid official at Davis's Blue Max Kart Club, and raced at Prairie City. Brian Terrill also was a committee member for Prairie City.

Karting was not the only sport Brian was involved in. He also worked as a grid official at Sacramento Raceway's motocross track, and was an avid water Skier.

Whether one knew Brian as a friend, or just saw him at the track and didn't know him by name, most all knew Brian. Everyday Brian touched another in a certain way. He could have been the one helping lift your kart, helping you line up on the grid, or just helping with advice. His happiness and enjoyment of the sport grew on everybody. You may have known him as Robin, his best friend Ray Zarick was Batman. Or you have known him from the last club race at Prairie City. He was the gentlemen jumping up and down yelling, "I beat the old man!" He had beaten his best buddy Ray Zarick in the TAG Masters class.

Brian was just a great guy. He was happy, and with that happiness he brought happiness upon others. Throughout the Karting community Brian Terrill will be missed.

Memorial services Thursday June 7th at Andrews and Greilich Mortuary at 10:00 am. East of Hwy. 99-3939 Fruitridge Road Sacramento.

5-30-07 IKF Region 11 Goes North to Medford

The Jim Russell IKF Region 11 Championship Series Presented by Bridgestone competed at the Medford Oregon Raceway this last weekend for Round four of the eight race series. The Medford club treated the racers and crews of IKF like royalty. Everyday the club BBQ'd lunch for everyone. Burgers and Hot Dogs. They even had fixings of Tomato's, onion, pickles, and even Mayonaise. Better yet while having the treatment of appreciation for all the karters that made the trip to the beautiful facility, it didnt rain once. This weekend was different than most IKF weekends. This was Medford.

Practice Friday was intense as the tires wore out after three sessions on the track. After practice, many took the 1/4 mile walk to the drag strip to watch the door slammers.

Starting Saturday was the Leading Edge Jr. 1 Comer. MMS Kartings Austin Dement took the pole in Qualifying with a 59.332. Dement would control the heat race for pole in the Main as well. Jon Norris and Dement would battle hard for the lead in the main with Kyle Kaiser and Joseph Keaton in tow. Norris would cross the line first with Dement Second. Kaiser finished third with MMI's Joseph Keaton in fourth.

California Kartworld's Jason Toft picked up where he left off in Redding by grabbing another pole in the Fastech Racing 125 National Cup class. Toft would win the heat and would start the main along side Corse Karts Nic Leduc on the front row. On the start Leduc got the early lead with Toft, Emmicks Jesse Gwin, and MMI's Chris Scribner. Leduc broke early and Toft took command for good. The battle was for second between Gwin and Scribner. Gwin would protect his position to the finish but would not pass weight and Scribner would get bumped up to second. MMS Kartings Mike Botelho would have a good run to third, and Corse Karts Cody Hodgson fourth.

Next up was the MMI Formula 80 Limited. Travis Duhn would get pole with a 55.229. In the heat Fastech Racing's Robert Towne and Duhn would make contact putting Duhn at the back and Towne on pole for the main. Towne would control this one from the start. Emmick's Davey Mead looked to make a run at Towne but they were fast in different parts of the track and Mead would settle for second. Emmick's Gary Gwin was third with Invaders Cole Nelson fourth. Mead set the fastest lap of the race.

Three Karts showed for HPV-4 and Colby Potts would get this one easy. Wyatt Nilsson second and Kelsey Nilsson third would be the finish. Bryan Stephenson would run wire to wire for the Sr. Superbox Heavy win with Hawiian Jordan Bianco finishing second, Brett Goerge and Jamie Wilson was the top four. Fastech Racings Jr. Superbox was last to take to the track. Cambrian Karts David Vasquez got the pole with a 56.819. Vasquez was dominant all day as he would get the heat race win and the main. David Brant failed Post race Inspection and would get last place points and Colby Potts would get second with Kartworlds Donavon Wheeler getting third.

Saturday night the open exhaust 360 sprints ran at the Medford Dirt track. Many of the Karters made their way over to watch some dirt racing. Sunday was a sad day as the pit learned of the passing of Brian Terrill. The whole pit had a moment of silence as a victory lap was made in honor of the great things Brian Terrill brought to Karting. The day was colder and clouds filled the sky.

First class out of the blocks was Bordogna HPV-1. Jon Norris was ahead of the field all day as fast qualifier, heat race winner, and Main event winner. Austin Dement got the second place finish, Kyle Kaiser and Joseph Keaton was the top four.

MMS Kartings Glenn McKinnon got pole for the Emmick 125 national Cup Masters. He would get the heat race win as well. In the main it looked as if Lance Grimm was gonna give him a run, but Grimm got hung out and would spin and have to come through the field. McKinnon would get the win with Wayne Lorenz in second, Emmick's Lance Grimm came home third, and Paul Hohlbein came home fourth.

The race of the weekend was HPV-2 Jr. Colby Potts got fast time with a 55.407. Cambrians David Vasquez got the heat race win. this setup a battle of the two in the main. Colby Potts got the lead and never looked back ending David Vasquez's streak of three straight wins in HPV-2. Vasquez got second, Wyatt Nilsson got together with Donavon Wheeler late allowing Joey Loucks to slip by for the third position and Nilsson would get fourth.

The Ram Mechanical Sr Superbox light was again dominated by Bryan Stephenson. Stephenson has been the man to beat this year in the Superbox classes. Jamie Wilson was second, with Jordan Bianco and Jeff Mason the top four. Steve Dow was dominant as well in the Fastech 80 Masters. He got the win with Jay Neely in his new MMS Karting Arrow second. Jeff Wamre and Jeff Jarvis the top four.

The Fastech Jr TAG has again shown to be a top future Jr class. With the first race at Redding proving to be a close one, this one did as well. The driving ability it takes to get these karts around the track, TAG jr looks to be the top class for years to come growing the jr drivers of today to the champions of tomorrow. MMS Kartings David Brant got the pole with a 54.43. Brant would get the heat race and main as well. Malissa Cole was second with Yazco Motorsports Tyler Bradstock third and Chelsi Wagner fourth.

The last race of the weekend was the Fastech 100 National Cup. Corse Karts Nic Leduc got the pole. Leduc and Scribner got away in the heat but Scribner would drop a tire and throw a chain setting up an all Corse Kart front row. On the start Jesse Gwin and Scribner worked together to train Leduc and Cody Hodgson to go one two into turn one. Leduc made quick work of Scribner and Gwin to go out front. Scribner would get by Gwin and try to make a run at Leduc, but Leduc was to tough. Leduc was the winner, Scribner Hodgson and Gwin was the top four.

Next IKF regional race is at the Stockton Motorplex in Stockton CA August 4-5  for round 5 of the Jim Russell IKF region11 Championship series presented by Bridgestone.

5-24-07 Austin Elliot wins PC Club

FIRST PLACE AT PRAIRIE CITY CLUB RACE #3 !!!!!!!!!!!

Austin Elliott #94 takes the checkered flag in a great, competitive race.  Secures the track record in Comer Jr. 1-2 cycle for fastest overall lap time on the Modified Perimeter track configuration (unofficial record at this time).

11 kart field, 12 lap Main, our set-up was dialed in, our engine was screamin', and our driver was focused to take the lead.

Starting the day qualifying in 2nd position meant going into turn 1 on the outside lane.   This lane is difficult because of getting squeezed out of a good position for turn 2, which is exactly what happened to our driver.

Emerging from turn 1 in 4th position, it only took a couple laps and Austin passes the driver in the 3rd place position and now sets his sights on making the pass on the 2nd place kart.  After 3 attempts at passing this 2nd place driver have failed, the 4th attempt proved victorious.....so now it's all about catching the lead driver, Jonny Norris, which could be a challenge. But in about 1 lap, Austin catches up to the leader and makes the pass on him on the straight-away in the middle of lap traffic. Our driver is now in the front row !!

3 to 4 laps of Austin being chased by Jonny, the two leaders heading for the top of the hill at the back of the track on the final lap. Quickly, Jonny passes Austin and our excitement level drops as we know Jonny won't give it back easily and there isn't much track left before the finish line......, but just as fast as he lost the lead position, he got it back on the next turn and our emotions once again raised sky high as we watched our driver skillfully take the last 4 corners of the track and onto the straight-away with Jonny chasing him to the finish line and Austin takes it!  We Win this one!!  Our First P.C. First Place win and how sweet it is.  You can see the pure joy on Austin’s face as he accepts this well-deserved First place trophy.

California Kartworld, Bordogna Racing Kart Engines, and Race Karts, Inc. came through for our team again!!

We were Fast with Daniel Bordogna’s engine tuning!  Our track support and race-day driver critiquing from Bill McCallister, and driver-training from Lisa Caceras, top-notch!  Thank you ALL.  Powerful Driving Austin!!!!!!!!!!!!  Our Team is Proud of You.

5-16-07 Jim Russell Shifter Sunday Championship Series

Shifter Sunday Round 2 for the Jim Russell Championship Series competed at Infineon Raceway this last weekend. Weather similiar to Saturday, Hot Sun, no clouds, however there was not a breeze like the day before, however on Shifter Sunday the pits seem a bit more tense. Less talk, and more work.

First to hit the track was Shifter 80 masters. Mike Lowater got the pole and the PreFinal win. In the Final, Lowater was given a run. The lead was a battle of the top three. Bill Wages was in the mix, but as the race grew old, some of the setups fell off but not Steve Peterson's. Peterson threw down fast laps to the win. Mike Lowater was second, Wages third, and Bob Lesnett was fourth.

ICC was up next. The first round of ICC was an epic battle. This looked to be the same. Tommy Thompson got pole, Steve Cameron got a killer start in the PreFinal and walked with the win. In the Main Cameron got the same killer start, but Derek Tillet gave chase early to Cameron. Tillet gave chase early and looked a few times, but Cameron only got faster and the battle became for second. Cameron got the win, Tillet held off Thompson for second while Thompson has to settle for third, and Grand National West driver Jose Ramirez finished fourth.

Next up was Stock Honda Heavy. The first round saw Matt Alcorn driving from the back to win. This race was different. Alcorn didn't have to come from the back. Mark Drennan had a chassis switch and was now on a CRG which he put on pole. Alcorn got the PreFinal win, and dominated the main. The race was with Drennan and Cambrians Donald Durbin for second in the early going, But Durbin started from the back in the PreFinal, and sixth in the Final on used tires and his kart would show as he would drop off in times toward the end. Drennan finished second, Durbin got a satisfying third in his first Stock Moto race, and Pete Mietz fourth.

ICC Masters took to the track next. Jim Kidd ran away with round one, but J.P. Cadoux wasn't racing. Kidd got pole barely, dogged Cadoux in the PreFinal, but would walk in the main as he would get the winning setup. JP Cadoux would get Second. Ron Tamba and Paul Walker would have a good race for third, which Tamba would capture, and Walker finished fourth.

Taking to the track next was the ICC Grand Masters. ray Rivera showed tough all day. As the others would stay with him early, Rivera would always pull away. Rivera would get the win, Gregory Abate finished a hard earned second, Lionel Lafite would get third, and Tim Fallon fourth. In Senior 80 shifter, you would see one driver that has been plagued with bad luck thus far. Eddie Veyl got fast time and cruised to the PreFinal win. In the Final veyl would have trouble with his engine, and pull off with a DNF. Veyl has gotten last both races after being the fastest kart on the track. Nathan Breitling, got the win, Sean Forbes second, and Tony Mangini third.

Last to take to the track was the Stock Honda Light. Steve Libby got pole, and the PreFinal win. The driver to watch however was Tom Dyer. Dyer started the PreFinal last and finished second. The Final got off to a rough start as Stephan Maus and Matt Hauff would crash in a head-on destroying both chassis. When they resumed competition,  Lloyd, Joe Hammil, and Larry Fraser gave chase early but Dyer would run away towards the end for the victory. Lloyd got a commanding second. Fraser and Hammill battled for third awhile before Hammill prevailed leaving Fraser to fourth.

Next Shifter Sunday is July 1.

5-14-07 Jim Russell Series Rotax Max #2

The Jim Russell Championship Rotax Series held their second race of the season this past weekend at Infineon Raceway. This weekend saw a record in entries for the Rotax series. 45 Racers came to compete in the series and combined with HPV, Comer and TAG Masters Sierra Race Promotions had a total of 75 entries, this does not include the 24 Arrive and Drive. Saturday was the raceday and the weather was warm with a hot sun, slight breeze coming from the east kept it cool.

The racing began with the Jr Comer. Luis Tyrell put down a fast lap in qualifying to set the track record. Tyrell has now got the timing record for all three tracks at Infineon. Tyrell got the Pre-Final win. In the main, Bobby Tift in his Birel got the setup that worked and got a good start. Tift led the first half of the race, as the tires got hotter, Tyrell got quicker. Tyrell made it stick in the sweeper and took the lead. Tift would be on his tail but the last few laps he dropped off and Tyrell cruised to the win. Tift was second, Austin Elliott third, Brody Zink came home fourth.

Jr Rotax hit the track next as Kartel Motorsports Neil Alberico and Cambrians Mikee Mejia would continue their battle from previous races. These two are no doubt the top Rotax drivers in Norcal. Mejia got the pole, but Alberico Got the lead in the PreFinal. These two would swap a few times, but Alberico got the win. Neil would get put back to second for jumping the start, and the Final front row would start the same. Alberico would again get the lead on the start. Mejia would chase him and retake the lead, but Kartel Motorsports Neil Alberico and his Top Kart would retake the lead and on to victory. Mejia was right behind Alberico, Jordan Jadallah would finish third, Cameron Pringle fourth. HPV-2 was dominated by Weddle, Cornell second, and Justin Wolff third.

Sr Rotax saw Marin Kartings Clayton Snow get fast time. Yazco Motorsports Michael Ostrowski looked to give Snow a battle in the main, but was shrugged off into the dirt on the start and went to the back. Snow was out by himself. Gregory Liefooghe got second, Joe Karratt third, Ostrowski made a run through the entire field to finish fourth.

In Rotax Masters Brit Leary got pole, David Carlisle got the win in the PreFinal. In the Final Brit Leary got behind early but later would run down Carlisle. Leary got the win, Carlsile was second, followed by Jay Brosius and Peter Boot. In Rotax Masters light, there was Great Racing. Bryan Hughes got pole and an easy PreFinal win, but the main was a different story. Hughes got the lead early but the Jim Russell Pro Shop driver Irvin Sevilla changed setup, got behind early, then caught Hughes and started the fight for the top spot. Sevilla tried to get by but lost ground, Hughes would drop a tire and spin out, allowing Sevilla to cruise to victory. Hughes would fight from fourth to second, Jo Montes finished third, and Richard Cockshot fourth.

In DD2 Cambrian's Gregory Liefooghe would get pole position and the win in the PreFinal. Marin Kartings Kris Shaw would grab the early lead in the Final but Liefooghe would get by as Kris Shaw would chase him, but Liefooghe was to tough and would get the win, Shaw finished second, Kartports Glen Poy Wing and Medusa's January Grove had a good battle for third, Poy Wing would come out on top leaving Grove in fourth.

TAG Masters Light was the race of the day. The top three guys were within hundreths. Cambrians Randy Wetmore got pole. The three battled in the PreFinal, but Randy Wetmore would prevail. On the start Ray Wetmore got the run on the outside and grabbed the lead. Randy would take over the top spot early. Jim Russell Pro Shop driver Tim Cleland would battle for second with Ray, but the last lap Cleland looped it in Cramer and Randy would get the win. Ray Wetmore second, Cleland third, and California Kartworld's Tony Delessandro fourth. David Oroshnik won the Tag Master Heavy, Grant Hetherington second, Joe Hollinger third, Herman Ip fourth. Next race for the Jim Russell Rotax Championship series is June 30.

5-15-07 Norcal Karter Makes Pacific F2000 Podium

Nor Cal Karter Makes Pacific F2000 Podium

(May 7, Salinas, Ca)- Last weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park Pacific Formula 2000 Series race driver and Nor Cal karter Thomas Merrill reached the podium in both of his two feature races. Thomas qualified second quick for each event, and then finished second in both of the two races held on Saturday and Sunday May 5th and 6th, 2007. He also captured the fastest race lap time, and the extra point that goes with it, in the Saturday event, ending an early season run of bad luck.

“I am very pleased with my race results for this weekend. It’s great for the team and I to finally get a good result after struggling in the first two events, and especially to do it with a sweep of the podium.  The PR1 Motorsports team did a fantastic job this weekend…to be over a second faster than the field is really a testament to their skills,” reports Thomas. This was the best race finish for Thomas this season so far.

Next on the schedule for the Pacific F2000 Series will be the road course at Miller Motorsports Park, located near Salt Lake City, Utah, on July 14th and 15th, 2007. This next race weekend will be held in conjunction with the NASCAR Grand National West Series.

“I would like to thank Merrill Farms, LLC and Smith & Hook Winery/Hahn Estates for their support this season, as well as Quicksilver Race Engines and Hankook for helping put the series on.  I look forward to taking our momentum to Miller Motorsports Park where I believe we will have what it takes to win.”

5-7-07 Jim Russell Tag Series Round 2 at Infineon
The Jim Russell Karting Championship Tag Series took place for Round #2 at Infineon Raceway this last weekend. Some racers were unable to make the first race due to the Stars of Karting Race of America's in Oklahoma. This weekend was in fact a competitive weekend as the hot track took some rubber and gripped up.

The Fastech Racing Tag light was first to take to the track. Amber Friedberg took pole in qualifying, however the top five were all within a few tenths. In the heat race, Friedberg led every lap, despite a train of six on her tail. On the start of the main Taylor Robutz got the whole shot from the standing start. P.H. Giffels, Marc Green, and Friedberg were all in tow. Amber made quick work of Green and went to work on Giffels. The two diced for position while Robutz opened up a three second lead. Robutz broke around halfway, and Giffels and Friedberg continued there for fight for the top spot. With six to go Friedberg took the lead for good and opened up a healthy lead. Amber Friedberg got the Tag light win. P.H. Giffels finished second with Green third and Terre Rothweiler fourth.

Next was the studded field of the KLS Racing Jr. Puma. Austin Root qualified on top. Root seemed to have the setup figured out on the Sprint Track as he was a bit faster then the field all day. Root would take home honors for the win. The race was between the next three. All day Jarrett Lile, Ryan Sonntag, and Andrew Wolocatiuk were battling for second. Lile won the battle finishing second, followed by Sonntag and Wolocatiuk.

The always fun to watch was the Cambrian Karts Tag Grand Masters. Masters is already the old guys, but every driver in this one was happy to tell you they were the Really Old Guys. California Kartworlds Bill McCallister was your pole sitter. Bill would take the Pre-Final win with ease, however the Final proved to be a fight. McCallister jumped out to an early lead followed by Sherrard, Ward and Munson. Towards the halfway mark, McCallister began to fade and the pack behind worked together and caught him with five laps remaining. Michael Sherrards kart had come in as he made the pass on McCallister for the lead. McCallister attempted to fight back but Sherrard proved to be too tough and held off McCallister for the win. James Ward was third and Rick Munson finished fourth.

The Cambrian Karts Tag Expert took to the track next as this proved to be the race of the day. Marin Karting's Brett Buckwalter qualified pole and then got the heat race win. In the Main, Buckwalter got the lead early with Corse Karts Nic Leduc was in tow. Buckwalter and Leduc checked out as the next five all fought hard for position. Snow held third for awhile, then Larry Fraser took over. Fraser and Snow got together dropping  Snow to a distant sixth. Renn Ortenburger got together with Jason Toft putting Ortenburger out of the race and Toft limping with a cut water hose. Buckwalter pulled away from Leduc late for the victory. Leduc was second, Larry Fraser was third, and Craig Degrazia had a quiet fourth.

Jr 1 Gazelle has showed major growth in 2007 as there were 13 karts. Joseph Keaton got fast time in qualifying. Joseph Keaton showed his talents as he dominated the day for the win. Daniel Langon and Nick Camusi had a good battle for second as did Joshua Feiber and Robbie Rodriguez for fourth. Keaton would cruise, Langon got second, followed by Camusi, Feiber and Rodriguez.

Last of the day was the Fastech Racing Tag Heavy. Cambrian Karts Donald Durbin got fast time. Durbin would get the Pre-Final win as well. In the Final the other caught on and were able to stay with them until the battle for second began. Both Tim Cleland and Dean Sanders were faster then Randy Wetmore who held second, but Wetmore hit his lines and was able to hold second. Durbin got the win with Wetmore second, Cambrian Karts Birthday boy Dean Sanders got his first podium with a third. Tim Cleland got fourth and Tim Villaneva got fifth.

Next Tag series race is June 16 on the Reverse Sprint track. Points and full results soon to come.

5-9-07 Kinsmen Kart Club #3 and Rotax Max

Kinsmen Kart Clubs Race #3 took place this past Sunday and the visiting Rotax Max added to the excitement. The weather was confusing. Anyone who has been to Dixon knows the weather changes without permission. The air was cool, the sun was hot, and the wind, well it was breezy.

The great contingent of Kid Karts was first to take to the track. These kids can drive. In the heat the top four were all really close. In the main Justin Yanez was the man laying down fast times. Yanez cruised as the drivers behind him battled for second. Jason Pettit won the battle and finished second, Thomas Hernandez and Wilson Skjerven.

Rotax Max Jr was up next, Mikee Mejia got pole. Jordan Jadallah won the heat race. The start of the main Jordan got the run through turn one and never looked back. Jadallah was the winner, Mejia was second, Cameron Pringle and Jake Mottax were the top four.

Doug Braddock Jr was the stud of the field in Jr 1-2 Cycle. Braddock got the pole, heat race and main win, however the battle for second was epic. Watching the club racers at Kinsmen work traffic like veterans was phenomenal. Alex Jacobsen came through the traffic with ease and cruised the last couple laps to an easy second place victory. Danny Rubino was third, followed by Alexander Perales.

Jr Sportsman was another good race. Michael Holloway got pole but Sean Merrick did the dirty on the high side of turn one to win the heat. In the main Holloway did the same outside move on the start. Merrick took away the lead only to blow a chain and hand the lead over to Michael Holloway who would cruise to victory. Bryce Hylbert was second followed by Lance Ketterman and Mitch Young.

Roatx Sr looked to be a good race. Wes Phillips got pole and led most the heat until Gregory Liefooghe took the lead in the closing laps to sit pole. Wes Phillips pulled into the pits on the formation lap. Joe Karrat and Michael Ostrowski got together on the start ending both of their days, and that left the battle to Marin Kartings Clayton Snow, and Liefooghe. Liefooghe led early but as setups came in, Snow made his move on Liefooghe in the back sweeper to take the lead for good. Snow was your winner, Liefooghe second, Troy Casteneda made a great run to finish third from his last qualifying position to finish third, and Glen Poy-Wing fourth.

Superbox Medium had a good kart count. Ryan Wakabayashi was dominant in this one. It was interesting to see the drivers get tired in this one as David Bixler came on strong in this one the lat five laps to finish second. Jon Gardner got a well earned third and Dave Heistand was fourth.

Merrick Miller was dominant in 80 Shifter senior, and Chris Bachman controlled the 80 Shifter Masters. Corse Karts David Harwin had to earn his win in the Rotax Masters while Richard Cockshott had to do the same in Masters light.

National Cup Masters provided a great race. Mike Ketterman looked to be on top most of the day but in the Final he had to work for it. Ketterman obviously wanted the victory more as he earned it. Chris Vigil was second and Ben Schreinerr and Steve Nimmo were the top four.

The race of the day was the Rotax RM1 DD2 class. DD2 is the newest Rotax growing in the Norcal area. Gregory Liefooghe got pole and showed to be dominant in the heat. When the main came, Marin Kartings Kris Shaw figured it out and was able to keep with Liefooghe. As laps wound down lapped traffic came into the mix. last lap it got heavy and Liefooghe made a wrong move and misjudged a lapped kart and allowed Shaw to slip inside of them. Both Shaw and Liefooghe rubbed and grinded, but in a clean racing to the win kind a way. Kris Shaw got the victory and Liefooghe got second. January Grove drove a hard race to finish third, and Glen Poy-Wing came home fourth.

Next Dixon Race is the crossover at Davis' Blue Max Kart Club. The next Rotax race is this weekend at Infineon Kart track.

package that will include an all expense paid trip to the 2008 Rotax Grand
(World) Finals for the Senior class winner, and a paid entry to the 2008 Rotax
Grand Nationals for the Masters class winner. Rotax drivers from North, Central
and South America are invited, as well as drivers from around the globe to
compete for the Senior class Grand (World) Finals qualifier.
Superkarts! USA CEO Tom Kutscher is excited about bringing the Rotax
program into the SuperNationals XI event schedule, “I have been eager to
expand our reach into other areas of kart racing, and the Rotax program is about
as exciting as it gets. The fact that the prize package is so strong is one thing,
but the real excitement will come when SuperNationals XI entries open on July
1st.” In 2007, the second year for a Kutscher-controlled SKUSA, participants will
see many event details arrive earlier than in prior years. Kutscher adds, “Both
Joe Ramos, who runs the Rotax Challenge in the United States, and I expect to
see some big international names come over and run- especially with this early
lead time. I want to thank Joe for providing SKUSA with this opportunity to
expand our reach globally.”
Last year’s SuperNationals X was an overwhelming success, and attracted the
top drivers, teams and tuners in the sport as well as a stellar array of sponsors.
This year, there are already some big names being thrown about in both the
driver and sponsor areas - with announcements waiting in the SKUSA wings.
A steady stream of information will be released to the karting media all season
long about the event and those attending. The media attention and atmosphere
surrounding the race last year was unprecedented, and the race day coverage
was unmatched in the event’s history. This year will be no different, and with
Rotax on board, the event is simply unstoppable. SSC Racing Sales Manager
and Rotax Program Director Joe Ramos Jr. agrees, “The SuperNationals has
been the number one karting event in the states for the last 10 years and, by
positioning the Champ Car Rotax Kart Challenge alongside SuperNationals XI,
the event’s stature can only increase.” Look for enhanced SSC Racing West
and East presence in all areas of SuperNationals XI this year as the company
continues to lead the karting community into the future.

5-1-07 IKF Region 11 Grips up at Redding

The IKF Region 11 Series made their way through the beautiful town of Redding. Shasta Kart club known for it usually cool weather and a view of Mount Shasta greeted the IKF series with warm weather. Okay maybe it was a bit hot weather. The racing was fierce throughout the classes as rubber went down under the hot sun. the racing line came in, and the game of gearing for the straight or the infield began. Those who know Redding well know that you gear for the straight and get your chassis free through the infield to run up front.

First to take to the track in the heat Saturday was the Leading Edge Jr. 1-2 Cycles. MMS Karting's Austin Dement grabbed the pole with a 49.620. Austin proving to be a major contender this year with great finishes and strong runs. Ian Fryer won the heat race but in the main, Austin Dement put in a strong run to bring home the win. Ian Fryer had to settle for second as Jon Norris and Kyle Kaiser were the top four.

Fastech 125cc National Cup was next to take to the track. This class proving to be the premier class as the top 14 karts all qualified within a second of each other. Kartworlds Jason Toft grabbed the pole with a 44.260. In the heat Corse Karts Nic Leduc got the whole shot as he started off pole which is the preferred line for the start at Redding and got the heat race win. In the Main, Toft was off pole and got the lead by turn three and never looked back for the win. The race was for second. Eric Schutte, driving for Fastech, held second while the next four karts were in chase. Halfway Norcal Karters own Chris Scribner's kart came in and he made his move getting by Corse Karts Cody Hodgson and Schutte for second. Just as soon as Scribner could breath, he broke a throttle cable and was done. Hodgson would get pass Schutte for second, and that was how they finished. Leduc would come home third.

The MMI Formula 80 Limited has also proven to be a premier class for the seniors this year as the top 12 karts all were within a second in Qualifying. Kevin Tanaka was top Dawg as he qualified with a 45.144. Kevin Tanaka battled with Fastech's Robert Towne in the heat but prevailed. The start of the main threw an interesting twist as last years champ Towne got a tap and was done after turn three. Kevin Tanaka seemed to control this one from the get go as he was very consistent. Adam Booker tried to run him down but was unsuccessful. Travis Duhn tried to put the pressure on Booker as laps wound down but Booker would finish second keeping Duhn behind him in third. MMI's Trevor Schmid turned a dismal qualifying into a solid finish in fourth.

Making their debut this weekend was the 7 kart class of the Zamp Helmets Jr. HPV 4. R/C Electrics Cody Kay was on top all day as he grabbed control in Qualifying, and brought home the win. Marcelo Montore finished second, followed by Nick Viscuisi third and Wyatt Nilsson getting his best IKF finish thus far with a fourth. Fastech's Sr. Superbox Heavy saw Fastech's Bryan Stephenson grab the pole by a half a second. Stephenson got the heat win. In the early going of the main Stephenson and Josh Veloz got together ending Veloz's day and putting a damper on Stephensons dominance, and Chris Gomez in his Emmick put down some quick laps to bring home the win. Brett Gorge was second, and Bob Snow was third.

Next up was the the XM Radio Animal Super Sportsman and company. Tyler Agan beat Keith Foux in Animal Super Sportsman, Paul Carter held off Tom Agan in World Formula, and Sheldon Crouse got the win in Jr. 2 Animal.

Last of the day was Fastetch"s Jr. Superbox. Timothy Weddle laid down a blistering lap in Qualifying and Controlled the heat race. In the main it was R/C electrics Cody Kay that hit the setup perfect, and ran hard to the win in convincing fashion. Cambrian Karts David Vasquez finished second with Bradley Genseal Third and David Brant Fourth.

Sunday was a new race day, and as most expected the same same hot track, it was a bit cooler. The Bordogna Jr. HPV-1 was up first. Jon Norris grabbed pole with a 48.285. Norris also won the heat, but in the main it was MMS Karting's Austin Dement earning his second win of the weekend. Ian Fryer would again finish second, while Kyle Kaiser was third and Logan Wyman fourth.

Emmick Enterprise National Cup Masters is always a good show. Glenn McKinnon got pole with a 44.692 just four tenths off the seniors. McKinnon was quick all day. Steve Slacks was just a bit off McKinnon. McKinnon got the win and Steve Slacks got second in his first race out of retirement. Emmick Enterprises Lance Grimm and Tony Rodriguez got by Mat Kattenek in the closing laps to finish third and fourth.

California Kartworlds Jr. HPV-2 was awaiting David Vasquez. Top Qualifier Cody Kay started from the back in the main and was unable to come through the field. Timothy Weddle and Vasquez had a good battle for the win as Cambrian Karts David Vasquez pulled off the Hat Trick in winning the first three races in Jr. HPV-2 competition. Timothy Weddle was second, Marcelo Montore and Colby Potts were the top four.

The Ram Mechanical sponsored Sr. Superbox Light took to the track. Bryan Stephenson was dominant all day as he would run wire to wire. Chris Gomez was second, Nathan Smith and Jeff Mason were the top four. Fastech Forumla 80 masters was pretty entertaining as it was who could just finish. Emmick Enterprises Tony Rodriguez was tough all day and got the win. Steve Dow was second, followed by Jay Neely and Darrel Dean. Only four out of the eleven total karts finished.

Also making their debut was the Fastech Tag Jr. Cody Kay got the pole, but Tyler Bradstock stole the heat, but Kay figured out the setup and ran with the main and Bradstock got second with David Brant third. The last race of the day was the Fastech 100cc National Cup. The top three were all real close but Cody Hodgson was a step up as Cody also ran wire to wire for Corse Kart for the win. Chris Scribner was second, Nic Leduc and Mike Botelho was the top four.

Next Race for Region 11 IKF is Medford Or. May 26-27. Photo's taken by John Valerio for Norcal Images.

5-1-07  Thunder Roars at Monterey Bay

The newly formed Monterey Bay Karters opened their 2007 race season with their inaugural race at the Marina Kart Track located on the beautiful Central Coast of California on Saturday, April 21, 2007. A huge turnout of drivers, mechanics and spectators filled the spacious pit area and all enjoyed the full race day designed to encourage participation and to maximize track time. Over one hundred karts ranging from cadets, two cycle, four cycle, Tags and shifters participated in this fun non-points event on the recently upgraded track layout and racing format.

Under the capable leadership of organizers Nigel and Alda Hearne, together with club President Brian Cavalli and Race Director Kurt Jensen, the new club put on a fabulous and fun event loaded with plenty of track time and good clean racing, not to mention a free BBQ!

Several newcomers to the sport were in attendance, some just spectators, and others racing on karts for the first time. Plenty of experienced and expert drivers were on hand also, making for some very exciting and close competition.

Monterey Bay Karters has taken over the former Salinas Valley Karters organization and will conduct a full season of racing and practice days in 2007. Check out the clubs slick new website at www.montereybaykarters.com for complete club information and race schedule.

Jim Russell TaG Saturday Race #1 Summary

Finally the season gets underway after a cancellation of the Saturday race day and moving the program to Sunday. Amassing what moving a race one day will do. At least the day was dry.

First race was the Junior 1-Gazelle. Last year for it’s first ever Gazelle race, there were 4 entries. This year 15 Gazelles showed up, WOW. And great racing by all. The drivers in this class have shown much progress over the winter months. Leading the way was 2006 class champion Joseph Keaton (TonyKart), taking a 14 second victory over Joshua Feiber. Nick Camusi (Italkart) was third followed by Maxx Marian (Italkart) and Noah Hermanson (Italkart) to fill out the top five. Joshua and Nick started 2006 in the Jim Russell Arrive and Drive series, but seeking new competition they moved into the Gazelle class with their own karts in 2007.

In the Fastech Racing sponsored TaG Heavy, Donald Durbin (Birel) controlled the pace of the class all day and went on to a strong win. But the best racing was behind Donald. First Tim Cleland (Tonykart) took the second spot with Randy Wetmore (Birel) right behind. Randy put the pressure on and Tim has not going to let him by, a classic battle between to friends. The two friends had a coming together in turn one and they tangled slightly, but that left the door open for Tim Villanueva (CRG) to get by and hold the second place spot for the remainder of the Main. Randy stayed close but had to settle for a third, one second back. Cleland started to slow and was picked off by Dean Sanders (Birel) for fourth and Cleland had to settle for 5th.

The Fastech Racing TaG Light class had a great race for 3rd, 4th , 5th and 6th but the front two spots were controlled by Taylor Robutz (CRG) and Kenny King (Italkart). Taylor cruised to a 6 second victory and Kenny was another 3 second up on the rest of the field. But great racing continued all race long right behind the two front runners. At the end, IKF regular Marc Green took 3rd over Terre Rothweiler (Birel), Jon Mullins (MBA) and Jesse Conha (GP), all within one second of each other.

In KLS Racing Junior Puma, the top 2006 regulars have moved on and a new generation of winners are taking over for 2007. With tons of practice over the winter, Jordan Jadallah (Trackmagic) took home his first feature race in the Puma class. But he had pressure all the way. After an incident in the Prefinal which forced Jordan into a 5th place finish, he worked his way through the field at the start of the Main to overtake leader and ILF regular Timothy Weddle (CRG). These two battled hard for the remainder of the race, but Timothy had to settle for 2nd less than a second back. Taking a strong third in his first Junior race was Jarrett Lile (Energy) followed by Ryan Sonntag (Italkart) and Andrew Wolocatiuk (Trackmagic). Austin Root (Alpha) won the Prefinal but was shuffled back to third at the start of the Main but mechanical problems ended his day after 7 laps.

The Cambrian Go-Karts TaG Grand Masters looked like it would be a great shoot out with the addition of Ray Wetmore (Birel) to the field. But two top runners did not even make the grid of the Prefinal due to engine problems. Class Champion Bill McCallister (Birel) and top 5 finisher from 2006 Rick Munson (Birel) both missed out on the days racing. Thus Wetmore went on to take a strong win. 4 seconds back was Scott Mortenson (GP) coming home to his best finish in the GM class. Manuel Deleonibus (Karat) drove home a solid 3rd with Woody Poynter (Birel) coming home 4th. This is the first race back for Woody, who had heart bypass surgery right after the Enduro last February. In 5th was new comer to the series Jim Ward (Intrepid) just proving that practice does make perfect.

Moving over to the TaG weekend in 2007, the California Kartworld TaG Expert class put on a very good show. Nic LeDuc (Tonykart) had a new kart and new support this year and put himself in front in the Prefinal and Main. But there was lots of speed right behind Nic. In the Prefinal, Brett Buckwalter (CRG) came from 5th to 2nd and looked poised to put pressure on Nic in the Main. Clayton Snow (CRG) was fast taking 4th in Qualify, but had engine problems that dropped him out in the Prefinal. In the Main, Nic took the lead right off the green flag with Buckwalter right behind. But Brett’s day ended on lap two when his pipe mount came off. Larry Fraser (GP) and Cody Hodgeson (Tonykart) were continuing their battle from the Prefinal right behind. Snow started the main from the ninth position but took over the second spot by lap 4 and tried to pull in LeDuc. By the end of the race, Snow cut into some of LeDuc’s lead, but came up 2 seconds behind. Fraser and Hodgeson finished 3rd and 4th with Viktor Sinzig (Swiss Hutless) finishing right behind in his first race on his new chassis. The hard luck racer was Craig DiGrazia (Rosa Korsa) who took the pole in Qualify, but had to settle for two DNFs in the Prefinal and Main.

On to the next race on May 5th.
