5-24-11 Kartel Norcal Outlaw Race Report

Kartel USA made the trip down south to Stockton, Ca for Round 4 of the WKA Outlaw Series. With a great result at Round 3 the Kartel Krew was looking forward to this race and keeping up that momentum. When Saturdays testing was over, it was a great start to the event knowing all Kartel drivers had a solid shot at winning on race day after reviewing the teams Practice times. With all of the time and effort at kartel that goes into preparing for each race, we expect great results, and that's exactly what the team gave. Kartel had 6 drivers Qualifying 1st out of the 9 classes offered. Good job team!!

Racing action got underway with Stephan Daniels representing Kartel/Magnum Racing Engines in the Kid Kart Class. Daniels drove a good race and kept his kart out of trouble when it counted. Getting shuffled around in the first portion of the race, Stephan kept his composure and finished the Final in third position.

Qualifying his Magnum powered Wild Kart in First position in Jr. 1 Comer, Davey Manthei lead the entire Pre- Final from start to finish to secure the Pole starting position for the Final. Manthei had his hands full in the Final, passing back and fourth in the opening laps with the second place kart. Using his experience over the other drivers, Davey made a brilliant pass to take the lead and never look back. A smart race and excellent passing, Davey gained valuable Championship points going into the final race next month.

Yamaha Senior drivers CJ Moonyham and Zac MacLean Qualified their Magnum Racing Engines powered karts first and second, with Zac edging out CJ for the pole. The duo raced hard in the Final and Zac brought home another win for the Kartel/Magnum group.

Jon "Banjo" Ban pulled his Magnum powered Top Kart out of the barn to size up the Shifter competition in Stockton. Right off the trailer, Banjo was fast. Pacing the field the entire day, Banjo added another Shifter win to his Karting resume.

Kartel had Four drivers entered in the KPV-2 class, and Qualifying saw the Magnum/Wild Kart of Blane Rocha set fast time over friend and teammate Sonny Cervelli (Magnum/Top Kart) by a record .001 thousandth. A great drive by both drivers making it another Kartel front row!! Blaine and Sonny put a big gap on the class in the Final with Sonny staying fast and consistent taking the win over Rocha who finnished second. Austin Elliot and Branden Tomko also had strong runs in the heat races as well as the final, both finishing in the top five.

Tag Masters was a great race to watch, and Corey Mitchel on his Magnum Rotax/Wild Kart put on a great show. Having never been to the facility before, Corey adapted to the bumpy surface and physical demands well and by winning this race, brought him much closer to his Championship goal.

The last class With Kartel drivers was the Ultra- Competitive KPV-1 class. Wild Kart Driver Davey Manthei once again brought the Magnum power to the front. Sweeping Qualifying, Heat and the final Davey had another great weekend in California. Jason Pettit had a great run with his Magnum KPV and finished up 3rd running fast times as well as gaining some solid points. Roy Fulmer Jr fought back in the final to earn himself another strong top five finish moving him up in the championship points as well.

The Kartel Group would like to thank all of their customers who attended the Stockton event, and helping dominate the weekend. Qualifying on pole in 6 out of 9 classes and winning in 6 out of 9 classes, makes the long weekends well worth it. Congratulations to all the drivers!!!

5-26-11 Cody Hodgson Shows Strong in NASCAR K&N Pro Series Event in Iowa

Traveling to the Iowa Speedway for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East meets West showdown, Californian pilot Cody Hodgson would look to make his presence felt in his Ocala Gran Prix sponsored Dave Davis Motorsports prepared entry. Competing in front of the NASCAR Nationwide teams and owners as a support program, the two-time defending Rotax DD2 United States National champion would try and continue his recent rookie success.

With the event taking place in Newton, Iowa at the Rusty Wallace owned Iowa Speedway, Hodgson would get up to speed early in his one and only ninety minute practice sessions. Averaging more than 130 miles per hour on the .875-mile oval, drivers would reach some of their highest speeds all season long as they looked to find that elusive setup come race time.

"I have to admit, the Iowa Speedway is pretty fast," expressed Hodgson after his first time on the track. "Earlier in the year we competed at Richmond which is also quite quick but I think the Iowa track is going to provide better racing and with more than sixty drivers, it will be important for a good qualifying effort to ensure that we stay out of trouble. It took me a little to get up to speed but once I was comfortable, we were able to work on car setup and running fast and consistent race laps."

After claiming the fifth quickest time in the practice session, Hodgson will look to qualify his #03 Ocala Gran Prix Dodge solidly in the field for the Pork "Be Inspired" 175 presented by Tompkins Industries event. When the dust had finally settled on their lone qualifying run, Hodgson would be awarded the twelfth quickest time of the session and an impressive outside sixth row starting spot.

The Escalon, California driver continued, "I am very happy with our qualifying efforts. A few tenths of a second separate the top fifteen so it was important to have a good lap. Now we will shift our focus to the race and try to gain as many championship points as possible."

In the long 175-lap event, Hodgson battled hard with veteran drivers in the top ten as he continued to show his true speed. Moving up into the top four for his East program, Hodgson would eventually take the checkers in the twelfth position overall claiming 142 points towards the end of the year title chase. With the effort, the Dave Davis Motorsports driver claimed an eighth place finish among the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East drivers.

Moving forward, Hodgson currently sits twelfth overall in the K&N Pro Series East Championship and a solid fourth in the Sunoco Rookie-of-the-Year title chase. Enjoying the Memorial Day weekend off, Hodgson will travel to Bowman Gray Stadium for the fifth round of the series as he looks to take his first victory at the Army Strong 150. Having tested at the facility earlier in the year, the Ocala Gran Prix driver has high hopes heading to the next event.

For more information on Cody Hodgson, please visit him online at www.CodyHodgsonRacing.com. 5-23-11 Prokart Challenge North Travels to Reno For Round Three

Superkarts! USA regional program makes first visit to historic Desert Park Raceway

The Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge North program will return to action next weekend with the third round taking place at the Desert Park Raceway in Reno, Nevada. The May 27-28 event will mark the first time the PKC program is to compete at the Northern Nevada Kart Club facility and journey outside the state of California. With the event falling on the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a full roster of series regulars and a number of local drivers are expected to be practicing on Friday and competing on Saturday, with plenty of time left over to enjoy the beautiful weather forecasted for the weekend.

The Desert Park Raceway is a multi-configuration facility, located less than 30 minutes from downtown Reno. The circuit to be used for the ProKart Challenge event will be Track #4, an 11-turn, 2/3-mile long track that currently holds a 46.610 course record. DPR hosted SKUSA events prior to this during the organization’s old administration, producing quality racing action and memorable moments. The eight categories competing on the weekend are sure to manufacture even more memories and excitement out on the course, and drivers in the shifter categories will be shooting to match or break that record once qualifying begins Saturday morning.

With just two events in the books and four left on the 2011 calendar, the championship chases are still up in the air. The Peterson Wealth Management-sponsored TaG Senior division has two drivers locked together at the top. Austin Elliott and TJ Fischer each scored a feature win thus far on the season and enter Reno just 20 markers apart. Reno-area residents Mike Botelho and Jess Peterson sit third and fourth, hoping their local knowledge can propel them up the order following Saturday’s action. Leading Edge Motorsports-sponsored S1 Pro Stock Moto will see Jason Toft and Brett Buckwalter continue their battle in Reno. Thus far, Toft has the slight edge after two rounds.

Jared Woolf is the driver to beat in the Sunshine Daydream Creations-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto division. With two main event victories, Woolf has a near 100-point advantage heading into Reno over last year’s S5 Junior Pro Tour champion Daniel Langon – with Jamie Wilson close to him in third – each holding one podium finish thus far. G1 transfer Jim Kidd leads the early going of the Fastech Racing-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto standings, thanks to a runner-up and victory in the first two rounds. Nick Galante had issues in round one but came back to run second behind Kidd at Prairie City. He needs a victory in Reno to help gain in the point chase. The S3 Novice Stock Moto division has two drivers locked at the top with Ryan Rasberry and Chris Yettito tied atop the standings. Both have an event win to their credit, with Reno to break the tie to complete the first half of the season.

Defending Pro Tour champion Ethan Wilson is carrying the #1 plate well in his home region as he currently leads the Cambrian Go-Karts-sponsored TaG Master class standings. Wilson jumped to the top after his event sweep in round two, with Dixon winner Glenn McKinnon now sitting 25 points back. Randy Froom and Derrick DeLong currently stand in third and fourth. Four drivers are in the early hunt for the Bordogna Racing Engines-sponsored TaG Junior championship. Nick Sommers currently holds the number one spot by just five points over round one winner Austin Dement. Class rookie Blaine Rocha currently holds the third spot, while defending Pro Tour champion Luis Tyrrell is fourth. Others are hoping for a solid Reno event to join the mix up top. The Cambrian Go-Karts-sponsored TaG Cadet category will begin a four-race mini series stretching over the final rounds of the PKC program. The TaG Cadet Rok Cup International Final Shoot-out will award the driver scoring the most points in the final four events with an invitation to compete at the October 16 event in Italy. As the series heads to Reno, Davey Manthei Jr. leads the PKC standings with a near 100-point advantage over Hunter Corbitt. Hunter Kelly and Danny Rubino are right there as well.

The ProKart Challenge discounted price structure – which lowers the package price for an entry and race tires down to just $295 if the racer registers online – is still available. Pre-registration pricing applies if completed before the midnight deadline on Wednesday, May 25 at www.skusastore.com . Signup at the track will be allowed, but will cost racers $85 more than the pre-race entry fee. Friday practice will be held from 9am to 5pm for just $60, although it is free to any new driver to Superkarts! USA or ProKart Challenge or one who has not competed with the organization in the last two years (must be pre-entered to qualify). A special SKUSA rate is available at the beautiful and luxurious Silver Legacy Resort. More information regarding round three of ProKart Challenge North at the Desert Park Raceway circuit can be found at the following link (http://www.superkartsusa.com/regional/pkc-north/round-3-2011.html).

Following the Reno event, Superkarts! USA will travel back to SoCal for the fifth round of the ProKart Challenge South program – to be held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California on June 17-18. More information on this joint event with the San Diego Karting Association will be posted shortly at http://www.superkartsusa.com/regional/pkc-south/round-5-2011.html. For more on anything related to the ProKart Challenge or Superkarts! USA, visit their website – www.superkartsusa.com – or call the SKUSA head office at 951-491-0808.

5-23-11 IKF Region 11 Elite Race Series Recap at Shasta Kart Club

Saturday’s IKF Region 11 Elite Race Series Recap for Day #1 April 30th at Shasta Kart Club

What a beautiful weekend for the IKF Elite Series to open up at Redding. The weather couldn't have been better at 70 degrees both days with 20mph wind on Saturday and no wind on Sunday. 48 karts averaged out the count each day. Not what everyone was expecting, but it will get better in Medford and in Reno. The club ran the seldom-used Track #2 as it's configuration that includes a crazy-long straight. Here are the recaps.

Jr. 1 - 4 Cycle Animals Blake Johnson put it on pole, followed by Logan Shultze. The green flag signaled our first heat race of the day, and Blake Johnson got a strong start. He rumbled down the long straight with others following closely in the draft. Johnson, was flawless through most of the race, & was your winner followed by Shultze at the line. The main would see identical results for this class.

Jr 1 - 2 Cycle was led by Enrique Jaime on pole, Clayton Williams to his right, with Richard Stock & Matthew Martin rounding out your top four. Some exciting side-by-side racing was enjoyed, and it seems the juniors always work hard to have fun out there. Enrique Jaime led the young racers across the line first to mark the end of the heat, with Richard Stock, Matthew Martin, and Clayton Williams in tow. The Jr. 1 racers started their main as they finished the heat. A tailwind introduced gearing options, and it appeared a few gambled with changes. Enrique Jaime led his group off the line, but it took 18 laps to settle things. Matt Proud skillfully worked up through the field to cross first, followed by Matthew Martin, and Clayton Williams to round out the top three in Jr 1 2 cycles.

Senior Animal Next up on the track was a rumbling herd of 4 cycles. The Animals has a very distinctive sound that turns heads, so with 14 on the track, many visitors came to the fence. National Champion Tyler Agan out of Hollister, CA put it on pole, followed by Zack Potts, Scott Charlton, and Dale Meyer. The start was clean, so an opportunistic Zack Potts grabbed the inside line as they came through turn 1, followed by Agan, Charlton, and Meyer. As temperatures rose, some chassis started to tighten up. Agan made his move with an inside pass for the lead mid race, and that’s the way they would finish. A few karts peddled backwards, the product of ill-handling equipment, but we’re sure that would be addressed prior to the final. In the Senior Animal main, Agan jumped out with his Italkart on rails, followed by Potts & Charlton. Revving close to 7500 RPM’s down the long straight, that group put on a show with close racing at every turn. The added dimension of bump-drafting meant that two karts worked better than one, insuring none could check out from the field. As the race progressed, personal conditioning, along with chassis adjustments made the difference. Agan was first to the line, then Meyers, Potts, and Charlton.

Jr. ll Animal class saw Justin Foux on pole, followed by Tyler Musliuk, National Champion London Amlin, and Christina Charlton. This group started behind the senior Animals, so great skill and focus was needed as they worked up through traffic. Amlin moved first, taking the lead from Foux, and followed closely by Tyler Musliuk. Those 3 put on a show, side by side around the wide Redding track. At the end of the first heat, it was Foux first, then Amlin, and Musliuk. The main was just as exciting. Foux & Musliuk drove like pros, but Amlin could only watch after breaking early in the race.

Jr. Super Sportsman pipe class was an All-Oregon field. Racer Reiter was the big winner in this group, scoring pole, heat, and main honors as the fastest of the class. Bryson Ramirez was off pole and Isaac Martin in P3 for the first heat. In the main, the real race was for second, and Martin edged Ramirez for the spot.

KPV-1 When the drivers lined up to take the track, the grid sheets had Enrique Jaime on the pole, Matthew Proud in P2, and Clayton Williams starting third. Jaime took them to the green, and then the three leaders stayed that way throughout the 14 laps. A relatively new track configuration seemed to get easier for all entries as lap-times continued to improve as the race went on. The main would finish the same way, with Jaime remaining fastest on track.

Formula 80 Senior karts roared onto the track next. Hometown hero Robert Towne was sure not to miss this race after a phone call from Cody McKinney, calling him out! Towne responded by posting a fast lap of 43.3, grabbing pole by 7 tenths over Reno's Gerry Williams 44.0. The stage was set for the first heat but it was all Towne as he beat Williams to the line by 9 seconds. 5 seconds behind Williams was McKinney who struggled a bit early on. Derrick Perkins and David Brant (spun out) would be able to hang on the lead lap, barely. The stage was set for the main and Towne came out rumbling. Williams was able to find some speed and keep Robert in view this time around. McKinney still didn't have what was needed to mount a charge on Williams. Back in the field, Reno's Ben Fisher and Perkins were holding off Mark Winstead for position. That's how they would finish, with Towne taking 1st place honors followed by Williams taking 2nd, McKinney in 3rd and Fisher in 4th.

Oh what a start to the series it was for the IAME Cup Masters class. Saturday showed Reno's Brian Rivera in his 81y FA Kart take pole with a 45.8 followed by Medford’s Tony Workman at 46.1. The first heat would see Rivera cross the lines first in front of Alan Mello and Mike Owen. The main event had Rivera on pole, where he would lead from start to finish in commanding fashion followed by Alan Mello in 2nd , Mike Owen in 3rd and Tony Workman in 5th.

IAME Cup was up next. Reno's Chelsi Wagner put her 112y ItalKart on pole with a blistering 44.6 time followed by Medford’s James Peterson at 45.3. The first heat saw Wagner pull away from Peterson and Kyla Zimmerman. She would win by 9 seconds. As the green flag dropped for the main, Wagner would again check out. Peterson would eventually come in 2nd at the line followed by Kyla Zimmerman, who drove and outstanding race for 3rd.

IKF R11 Championship Elite Series Race Day #2 May 1st

Sunday proved to be even better than Saturday for most of the drivers. The weather cooperated with us as we saw a nice comfortable 70 degrees with no wind on Sunday. 43.5 karts averaged out the count each day. Here's the recap.

Jr. 1 - 4 Cycle Animals Blake Johnson was again the kart to beat on pole, followed by Logan Shultze. Our first heat race saw Blake Johnson rocket off to take a commanding lead, and would drive flawlessly throughout. Shultze was struggling with a tight kart. The main was a different story as karts were more evenly matched, and nose to tail, matching moves over 18 laps. Johnson had to earn it as Shultze improved his game to finish second. Congrats to these young racers for a job well done.

Jr. ll Animal class saw a new entry establish the time to beat for pole. Ian Fryer qualified ½ second quicker than the field followed by Justin Foux, Tyler Musliuk, London Amlin. At the green Fryer weaved through traffic, but the fastest 4 karts on the track separated only slightly. The draft figured large as the front stretch tow kept all in contention. At the end of the first heat, it was Fryer 1st, Foux, then Amlin. The main was just as exciting with Fryer leading & Foux on his bumper. After Amlin broke, it was a two kart race because Musliuk got behind slower traffic, and that’s how they finished.

Jr 1 - 2 Cycle Sunday’s start had Clayton Williams on pole, Matt Proud off pole, followed Enrique Jaime & Matthew Martin. Williams took it wire to wire crossing first, with Matthew Proud and Jaime rounding out the race order. The Jr. 1 racers saw the tailwind go away just before the start of the main, but it made little difference as only Stock could improve his position. Matt Proud again crossed first, followed by Clayton Williams, Enrique Jaime, Richard Stock, and Matthew Martin.

Senior Animal saw a familiar face battle back from Saturday’s mid-pack run. Keith Foux put it on pole, besting Tyler Agan by 15 thousandths of a second on the 6/10th of a mile track. Scott Charlton, John Luaces, Dale Meyers, and Zac Potts lined up for the first heat right behind them. Foux lead them to the green flag, but it was Agan that came around in the lead after one. Foux would depart with a broken part, quickly replaced in position by Potts. Karts working together made for great racing, sometimes side by side through the turns. It would finish as Agan, Potts, Meyer, and Charlton, setting the starting order for the main event. At the drop of the green, the thundering heard of Animals worked to survive the 65+ mph braking zone at the end of the straightway. Some didn’t, getting shuffled back in the process. The lead pack saw closing racing early on, but separated with Agan outclassing the field finishing 8 seconds in front of Potts, followed by Meyer, and Charlton.

Jr. Super Sportsman pipe class was again an All-Oregon field. Racer Reiter continued his dominance scoring pole, heat, and main for the 2nd straight day. Isaac Martin improved to off pole, and Bryson Ramirez lined up in 3rd for the first heat. After the checkered fell, positioning stayed the same. In the main, the real race was close, as Reiter & Martin were separated by less that a ½ second. Ramirez rounded out the top three

KPV-1 Enrique Jaime proved superior as he again took the pole position. Position two had Clayton Williams, then Matthew Proud starting third. Enrique Jaime was fast all day, winning both the heat & main event, besting Williams & Proud on this day.

On this day in Formula 80 Senior, Redding's Robert Towne didn't quite have the cushion in speed between himself and the next driver. Towne would place his kart on pole over Gerry Williams by 1 hundredths of a second. The first heat saw Towne take the P1 spot and never look back. Williams was able to stay somewhat close to the speedster Towne, finishing ONLY 3.8 seconds behind after a 12 lap heat. Cody McKinney and Ben Fisher would have a nice battle for 3rd with McKinney beating Fisher to the line. David Brant would have a mechanical problem after lap 2 and have to retire from the race. That brought out the main event with all the engines revved up. The green dropped and Towne again took the lead out of the box followed by Williams and McKinney who would have an epic battle for 2nd. They both would change position 6 times during the race. Fisher would have to hold off a charging Brant as 2nd thru 5th place would cross the finish line exactly 1 second apart!!!! The race ended with Towne getting another win, followed by McKinney in 2nd, Williams in 3rd, Fisher in 4th and Brant in 5th.

As was the case on Saturday, Reno' Brian Rivera wasted no time in IAME Cup Masters qualifying effort. This time he would run a fast time of 44.8 followed closely by Tony Workman at 46.0. As the first heat green waved, Rivera would dart out into the lead followed closely by Tony Workman and Alan Mello. They would finish the heat in that order with neither of the two able to mount a charge on Rivera. The main event saw the same as the previous heat except Workman and Mello would have mechanical failures. The door was open for Mike Owen to claim the 2nd position with Rivera in 1st. Congrats on a weekend sweep by Rivera in his FA kart.

Next up on the grid was IAME Cup. As in the Masters classes, the same thing happened from Saturday as Reno's Chelsi Wagner again put her 112y ItalKart on pole with a scorching time of 44.2. Medford’s James Peterson would find some much needed time and run a 44.7. In the first heat, Wagner would again leave the other fighting for 2nd. This time though, Kyla Zimmerman was able to find more speed as she was able to keep up with Peterson. She would finish 8 tenths behind him while Wagner was able to lead from start to finish. Wagner again would find herself on pole. This time she took the green and never looked back, winning by 26 seconds over Peterson. Zimmerman would encounter motor problems which denied her the opportunity to battle Peterson.

All in all, it was great racing by a great group of racers. Shasta Kart Club would like to thank all the racers for coming out and making this weekend what it was. Race Directing by Dave Brant was excellent. Thanks to all the staff workers including registration girls and tower people. They worked their butts off to make this happen. The corner workers were sensational as they kept the track safe all weekend. See everybody in Medford June 11-12!!!

5-18-11 Karting Mother is Inspiration for Modified’s Michael Ostrowski
Photo and Story by RMG Race Media Group

ROSEVILLE, CA. Nineteen-year-old Michael Ostrowski pilots the number 77 machine in the Modified division entering 2011 as his third year in modifieds. Michael is no stranger to racing, he began racing at the young age of eight in quarter midgets then moved up to go karts where he established his racing resume. Michael has captured 5 championships in karting and has finished runner up in the Grand American Modified Division at Stockton 99 Speedway in his rookie year. With over 50+ wins in karting, today Michael is still actively racing go karts. Michael races his modified machine on Saturday nights at All American Speedway and Sunday’s he’s at Infineon Karting center racing the Red Line Oil Karting Championship or other regional karting series in northern California. “The cornering capabilities, straightaway speeds, and the tracks are very technical and challenging,” says Michael on what he likes about karting.

Michael Ostrowski tested a modified in early 2008 and that was his turning point in his racing career. Spring of 2008 Michael had built his own left hander modified from bare frame in four months. After the modified was complete Michael got the opportunity to race the last four races at Altamont before the track closed. On the last race Michael had set fast time in his new modified and was his first fast qualifier in his fourth career start in modifieds. However, Michael has not won in the modified division yet so he is looking to capture wins at All American Speedway. On race days, Michael’s job is to not only drive but to be a mechanic on his own car and regularly double checks everything. Michael’s dad, Scott, is Michael’s spotter and mechanic on the 77 machine. To prepare himself for racing, he believes it is important to be physically fit and works out 5 days a week and eats healthy. Michael loves racing Modifieds because of the horsepower to weight ratio and the feeling of always being on the edge but mostly because they are open wheel. This year Michael is not only looking to run upfront but to get a few wins for his mom.

Michael’s mom, Nanette Ostrowski, 48 years old, has been battling cancer since last October when she was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the lung, and lymph nodes in the brain. Since then Nanette is rarely at the track to watch Michael race due to her chemo treatments which have made her too sick and weak to make the drive up from Salida to Roseville and back. “I am nervous when Michael races whether or not I attend. My husband, Scott keeps me up to date with many phone calls and text messages throughout race day. I try to attend most of Michael’s races but I’m limited to how I feel and I have already missed a few of his 2011 races,” says Nanette. Nannette has been involved in racing since 1982 when her husband Scott introduced her to the I.M.S.A. event at Watkins Glenn, NY. Since then both Nannette and Scott have enjoyed all forms of racing. “I have been supportive and involved in Michael’s racing for over 11 years. My proudest moment was in 2005 when Michael started a training and exercise program and he lost 32 pounds at the age of 13. He then won 2 championships in karting that same year!” says Nannette on Michael’s success. Before Nannette was diagnosed with cancer her role as a racing mom was not only to be supportive but to keep all of Michael’s safety equipment clean, encourage Michael to stay fit, eat healthy and be a good sportsman.

Michael loves racing and enjoys racing his modified at All American Speedway. Michael hopes that his mother will be able to witness his first modified win at the Roseville facility. Racing is truly a family sport and many memories are created at the track. Michael will be running the full Modified championship points series. Be sure to keep an eye on the red number 77 modified. Michael would like to thank the All American Speedway fans for supporting him and All American Speedway.

5-13-11 Red Line Oil Karting Championship Series Round 2

Finally spring has shown itself and what better day to do it than on race day for Round 2 of the Red Line Oil Karting Championship. With sunshine, a slight breeze and temperatures in the mid-70s, 64 racers took to the track on the tight and therefore challenging Sprint track configuration at the Jim Russell International Karting Center at Infineon Raceway. One of the Molecule Pro Mazda formula cars was on display. At the end of the year, the top champion from the senior and masters classes will get a test day in this car as part of the Molecule sponsorship of the RLOKC.

GoPro Featured Race - 80 Masters

With nine drivers on the grid, the 80 Masters class did not disappoint with a very spirited day of racing. Taking the pole for the second race in a row was Bob Lesnett followed by Roger Cornwall and Greg Richter. In the first heat, Lesnett took the lead out of turn one and was never challenged. The great battle was right behind with Cornwall, Richter, and Ahmiel Freed all running close with Cornwall taking second and Freed getting by Richter to take third. In the second Heat, Lesnett again took the lead at the start, but Richter had a very good start to take over the second spot, a position he would hold for the entire eight lap race. The next four drivers battled hard and came across the line with less than a second covering all four drivers. Freed held off Mark Stanley for the third spot with Cornwall fifth and Tom Nelson sixth. In the Main, again Lesnett led the field through turn one with Freed taking over second. Richter was putting pressure on Feed and eventually made the pass for second and set out after Lesnett. About half way through the fifteen lap Main, Nelson spun exiting Tic-Tac-Toe and was out of contention. Richter, Freed and Cornwall stayed close and would not let Lesnett get away. By the end of the race, Richter was no more than a kart length behind the leader, but just could not see the opening to make a clean pass. Thus, Lesnett hung on to take the win, Richter took second and the fastest lap award followed by Freed, Cornwall and Geoff Provo. With the win, Lesnett took home the HD Hero Camera courtesy of GoPro.

Rotax Masters Light

Andrea Delfanti took up where he left off last month taking the pole ahead of the seven kart field. Stephan Gaudreau was second qualifier with Berto Wooldridge third. In the first heat, Delfanti took the early lead with Wooldridge in second. Near the end of the race, Delfanti spun and recovered quickly, but gave up one position. Wooldridge went on to take the win, Delfanti second and David Carlisle third. In the second heat, Delfanti took the early lead again with Gaudreau in second followed by Wooldridge. Gaudreau and Wooldridge touched in one corner and this allowed David Carlisle and Mary Beth Wilson to get through. Delfanti took the win ahead of Carlisle and Wilson. In the main, Delfanti took the early lead again, but this time Carlisle followed him out of the first turn and stayed close to the normally dominate Delfanti. Wilson and Wooldridge battled for third the entire race with Wilson coming out ahead in third, Wooldridge in fourth and Corey Mitchell in fifth.

S2 & S4

With the SKUSA Pro Tour event going on in Tucson, the field for the S2/S4 field was down to six karts. Brett Buckwalter took the pole ahead of Jason Toft with Brad Shaffer taking the top S4 spot with his fourth place qualify. In the first heat, Brett took the lead ahead of Jason and the two of them were nose to tail the entire race. Shaffer got by S2 driver Neil Joseph to take third. In the second heat, Buckwalter got a bad launch at the drop of the green flag. Toft took the lead and was never challenged. Brett got back within two seconds of Toft, but had to settle for second followed by Joseph and Shaffer. In the Main, Buckwalter took the lead at the green with Toft close behind. In the S4 battle, Shaffer was beat into turn one by Nick Galante. These two drivers battled hard the entire fifteen lap distance with Shaffer not able to find a way by. In the end, Buckwakter took the win ahead of Toft with Joseph in third, all three being S2 drivers. Galante came home fourth and took the S4 win with Shaffer fifth and David Preece sixth.

Rotax Masters

The largest class of the day was the Rotax Masters class with ten drivers. Jerry Pretti took the pole convincingly ahead of Cameron Evans and Bob Hurst. In the first heat, Pretti took the lead at the green with Evans and Hurst right behind. Working his way up from his fifth was Scott Ripslinger, demoting Hurst to fourth with John Breidinger taking fifth. The second heat was almost a carbon copy of the first race with the top five drivers repeating in the first to fifth positions. In the main, Pretti took the early lead and pulled away to a convincing win. Ripslinger put pressure on Evans the entire way, finally getting by near the end to take the second. Evans finished third , Hurst fourth and Ken Santos passed into fifth place near the end of the race.

Sanzaru Games Rotax Mini Max & KPV1

Five Mini Max karts and the lone KPV1 of Alec Hudson took to the track with Michael Avansino taking the pole ahead of Annie Breidinger and Michael Michoff. In the first heat, Michoff got right behind Avansino out of turn one and raced nose to tail for the entire eight laps. Annie Breidinger was in third when her kart lost power allowing her sister Toni Breidinger to take over third. In the second heat, again Avansino lead Michoff out of turn one and the chase was on again. Horatio Fitz-Simon got his kart into third at the start and had constant pressure from the both Breidingers the whole way. On the white flag lap, Michoff stalked Avansino looking for a way by and the opportunity came with a well set up pass on the last turn to take the win. Avansino came home second and Fitz-Simon third. In the main, Michoff rolled the outside of turn one to come out in the lead and now the shoe was on the other foot, Michoff first, Avansino second. But Michoff immediately pulled away and went on to a four second win. Fitz-Simon initially held third with first Toni Breidinger, then Annie Breidinger putting the pressure on Fitz-Simon. With less than five laps to go, Annie Breidinger put her kart under Fitz-Simon to take over third, then opened up a two second margin. In the end, Michoff took the win, Avansino second, Annie Breidinger third. Alec Hudson took home the KPV1 win. Michoff took home the Sanzaru Games $50 first prize with $30 and $20 going to second and third places.

Senior Rotax

The eight kart field was not large in numbers but large in competition. Niki Luna took the pole ahead of Raymund Bustamante, Jr. and Sean McDonald. In the first heat, Luna lead the field through turn one, but exiting Tic-Tac-Toe, Luna and McDonald touched and both went spinning forcing Bustamante to also take to the grass. Tazio Ottis in only his second Senior Rotax race became the leader. Ottis lead the field for four laps being chased by Andrew Colombini and Jarrett Lile. The top three qualifiers recovered quickly and started to chase down the pack. Bustamante was the first to challenge for the lead, taking over the lead on lap five. Luna cut back through the field and passed Bustamante a couple laps later with McDonald getting by Colombini on the last lap to come home third. Ottis came home fifth. In the second heat, Luna took the initial lead and never was challenged with Bustamante and McDonald coming home second and third. In the main, Luna lead from the green and drove on to a convincing eight second win. Bustamante and McDonald battled hard with Bustamante holding on to take second and McDonald third. Andrew Colombini drove his best race since joining the series to come home fourth and Jarrett Lile taking fifth.

Junior Rotax & KPV2

In qualifying, the two Junior Rotax karts of Will Preston and Zack Dante qualified ahead of the two KPV2 karts of Austin Thomas and Mason Filippi. In the first heat, the two Junior Rotax drivers did battle with the KPV2 karts also close to each other. Preston took the win over Dante with Thomas third and Filippi in fourth. In the second heat, Dante took a very narrow win over Preston with Filippi also taking a narrow win over Thomas. In the main, Preston took the early lead and went on to a two second win over Dante to take the Junior Rotax class win. In the KPV2 class, Filippi took the initial lead and Thomas took his time to look for the right time to make a pass. Thomas timed his pass just right on about the fifth lap and crossed under Filippi exiting turn one to take the lead and pull away for a four second win in class.

Rotax DD2 Master

In the two-speed Rotax shifter class, Andre Eriksen took the pole over David Palic and Dave Moody. In the first heat, Eriksen took the lead out of turn one with Palic and Moody close behind, but Michael Ostrowski was cutting through the field from his fifth starting spot and he passed into second by lap two and got by the leading Eriksen by lap six to take the win with Eriksen second and Palic third. In the second heat, Eriksen again took the lead at the drop of the green, but this time he held onto it for the entire distance with Ostrowski coming up a half second short. Moody battled Palic to take the third spot. In the main, Ostrowski took the lead through turn one and was never challenged. Eriksen came home second with Palic winning the battle for third against Moody.

IAME TaG, TaG Senior & TaG Junior

Seven spec gear IAME TaG karts took to the track with one lone TaG Junior and one TaG Senior kart. In qualifying , Niki Luna took to pole in his Rotax powered TaG Senior kart, with Austin Thomas off pole in his TaG Junior kart. Don Rocci, Bryson Guzman and Darrin Geahry in IAME TaG karts took the next three spots. In the first heat, the top five karts in qualifying were running the same spots in the heat race when Austin Thomas lost his neck collar and had to pit and Mike Ketterman took over fifth. In the second heat, the top five were as per qualifying with Luna first followed by Thomas, Rocci, Guzman and Geahry. In the main, Luna drove to a comfortable win ahead of Don Rocci and Bryson Guzman, first and second in IAME TaG. Austin Thomas took fourth overall and first in TaG Junior with Darrin Geahry taking fifth overall and third in IAME TaG.

5-10-11 Kartel Tucson Race Report

Kartel Motorsports has been known for their National race Team and Driver Coaching services. The team has changed focuses in recent years, turning their eyes on the local scene. Always keeping an eye on up and coming drivers locally, kartel still holds great value in National racing. SKUSA has been on the map for a long time and with their growing Pro Tour Success, Kartel will be using the tour as their premier program for 2011. Competing against the other teams and Importers, lets kartel pair their Chassis and Engine Program against the best in the business. First on the Pro Schedule was the Musselman Raceway in Tucson, AZ.

With Friday Practice in the books the team was looking forward to racing action as everyone under the tent was at some point at the top or near the top of the timing charts. That was still the case for Cadet Drivers Davey Manthei and Sting Ray Robb. The duo put their Wild Karts on the front row in Mini RoK Qualifying. Starting first and second was a great start for their weekend which saw ups and downs. The Heat races were exciting as Davey raced very hard and Sting Ray stayed clear of trouble securing them both a spot on the podium for the Final! Kartel/Magnum had a great showing in this growing class.

Tag Jr. Racing was extremely close and very competitive, which is all the more interesting for the teams Jr Drivers. Blaine Rocha (Wild Kart) and Sonny Cervelli (Top Kart) joined 2010 Pro Tour Champion Luis Tyrrell (Wild Kart) in their first Pro National TAG Event. The trio of drivers drove stellar all weekend, overcoming issues that seemed to plague each of them in some way or another. Blaine Rocha drove from a poor Qualifying result to a top five for the weekend and Sonny Cervelli put his Top Kart on the podium as Vice Champion.

In the Super Pro S1 Stock Moto Kartel Motorsports entered Ryan Phinny. In between Indy Lights testing and races, Phinny stays in shape racing his Magnum powered Wild Kart. Having never been to Tucson, Ryan took well to the Suzuka replicated race track. Right off the trailer he was fast. Posting fast times all of Friday, Saturday was not as expected. Having kept his kart fresh and together through the heat races, a failing part on the engine put Phinny out of contention for the win on Saturday. Just as any professional Race Car Driver would have done, Ryan kept his composure and Performed on Sunday. In the ultra competitive class full of pros, Phinny added another podium result for the Kartel Group, making it another great weekend for the team.

In what some describe as a “Mini Super Nationals” Kartel gained valuable data during their first major event of 2011. The information gained in Tucson will sure be used in the upcoming months in preparation for the remaining pro Kart North events, as well as the Pro Tour in Colorado. Next up for kartel is the WKA Outlaw Series at Stockton, Ca. For any information on racing with Kartel or any questions regarding the Wild Kart, Top Kart or Magnum Racing Engines please contact kartel 916-383-5278 or erik@kartelmotorsports.com

4-3-11 Bray and Felkins Triumph at Superkarts USA Pro Tour Spring Nationals

Kiwi doubles up in S1 as NorCal driver earns one of two TaG Senior features from Honda Racing/HPD SpringNationals to take home $1,000 each

Five months following the end of the inaugural Superkarts! USA Pro Tour season, the sophomore year of the organization’s top tier program kicked off in exciting fashion with the running of the Honda Racing/HPD SpringNationals. The Musselman Honda Circuit in Tucson, Arizona was the backdrop for what could be considered a ‘mini-SuperNationals’ – as the level of competition and the racing that took place during the series opening two rounds on Saturday and Sunday rivaled that of the famed annual event.

Drivers in the eight Pro Tour categories began their quest to become part of the ‘Circle of Champions’ program for 2012, with the two Pro classes duking it out for a piece of the $3,500 cash purse on the line. With the support of Honda Performance Development, all the podium finishers in the Stock Moto categories received a new top-end rebuild kit to further establish their support in the sport of karting and the SKUSA organization.

New Zealand driver Daniel Bray pulled off the double as he earned the checkered flag in both S1 Pro Stock Moto features to take home the $1,000 weekend point winner check. In TaG Senior, Northern California driver Brett Felkins stood on the podium both days, including a win on Saturday, to help him score the cool $1,000.

Bray was the class of the field in S1 Pro Stock Moto sponsored by Superkarts! USA. Bray’s only slip-up was in qualifying – as he was edged out by 0.094-seconds by Brad Dunford, who posted a new track record with a 48.453-lap. From there, Bray won both heat races and then the main event by just over two seconds, including the fast lap of the race. Veteran Tom Dyer held off a charging S1 rookie Lukas Johnson for the runner-up step on the podium. During Sunday’s round two qualifying session, it was Bray who edged out the competition and posted a new track record (48.237). Bray was in position to score the opening heat race until trouble struck on the final lap. The rear gear sprocket spun on his axle, forcing him to lose valuable horsepower. This allowed the field to pass him heading to the checkered flag. Johnson came away with the victory, while Bray finished seventh. In heat two, Bray knifed his way forward to reassume the point as they took the white flag, going on to score the win. From there, Bray led wire-to-wire to score his second victory of the weekend and control the championship lead heading to the SummerNationals. Johnson completed his S1 debut weekend with another stellar performance on the day, placing second to Bray. Everything came together on the second day for Ryan Phinny, as he ran consistent throughout the day to earn a third place finish in the feature. With Bray taking the $1,000 check, Johnson earned $500 for placing second on the weekend total with Dyer scoring $250 for third.

With 33 drivers entered in TaG Senior sponsored by Phil Giebler Racing, no one driver stood out as the clear-cut favorite heading into the event. The results on the weekend reflected that, emphasizing consistency and staying out of trouble with the reward being the $1,750 purse to the top three on the weekend. Mason Marotta began Saturday’s round one as the driver to beat as he posted the fast lap in qualifying. Marotta looked to be in the hunt for the win in the opening heat until a broken throttle slowed his pace and put him nearly last in the order. That allowed Louie Pagano to claim the win after holding off Senior rookie Dakota Dickerson and veteran Matt Johnson. In heat two, Johnson scored the win over a determined Dickerson with Brett Felkins now into the mix. Pagano was the early leader of the main event – and was pressured by Johnson until he was forced to pit lane with a loose rear bumper. This put Felkins in the challenger role. On lap 11, Felkins took over the lead and was able to gap the fight for second. At the line, Felkins scored the victory by 1.3 seconds over Pagano and Dickerson – posting a podium finish in his first ever Senior-level start.

Marotta shook off the mechanical issues he encountered Saturday to claim his second pole position on the weekend during Sunday’s session. A slim 0.003-second margin was all that separated his 49.777-lap and Brazilian Andre Nicastro’s fast lap – with Johnson also within one-tenth of Marotta. From green to checkered, Marotta scored the win in heat one with the same challengers in tow while Johnson won a three-kart battle in heat two with Marotta and Nicastro trailing. In the main event, Johnson led for the majority of the race with five karts forming the lead pack. On lap 17, Marotta made his move for the lead as they exited turn one. Johnson fought back on lap 19, bringing Dickerson with him through turn 10. At the checkered to complete lap 20, Johnson held off Dickerson for the victory, with Felkins completing the podium. When the final points were tallied, Felkins scored the $1,000 check with Dickerson taking home $500 and Johnson $250.

Two Arizona drivers claimed victory in S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto sponsored by Zanardi America – Nicky Freytag and Kyle Hathcox. Freytag began round one as the top driver in qualifying. However, a stall on the start of heat one sent him to the tail of the 31-kart field, eventually finishing 19th. This gave the opportunity for last year’s runner-up in the championship standings – Matt Alcorn – the chance to claim the top spot and the race win over returning driver Patrick Cushenberry and new chassis importer and Pro Tour sponsor Arie Luyendyk, Jr. Trouble struck for both Cushenberry and Luyendyk, with Hathcox taking advantage to move into the top five and he eventually drove to the win over Alcorn and Evan Walters. As the field completed the first of 20 laps for the main event, Hathcox led the way with Freytag jumping from sixth on the grid to second. The two exchanged the lead position a number of times leading up to the final lap. With Freytag ahead, Hathcox made a move into turn one but lost some ground as they exited the corner. He came back one more time in turn ten, but Freytag was able to fight him off and earn the checkered flag. Hathcox settled for the second step on the podium, with Walters joining them in third.

Texan Jake French sat on top of the time chart following Sunday’s qualifying session following a poor 19th fast lap in Saturday’s session. Joining him at the front in heat one was Hathcox and Cushenberry, as the trio put on a good show with both managing to work by French after 10 laps. In heat two, Hathcox continued to show the way with French on his tail, finishing that way at the checkered. Both were joined by Ryan Kinnear and a charging Freytag in the main event. On lap six, French was running second when he went too deep into turn 10, allowing Kinnear and Freytag both by and gave extra room for Hathcox out front. Running his fastest laps of the race in the final laps, Hathcox stretched out to a 3.215-second victory. Kinnear would win the battle for second over Freytag and French.

Jimmy McNeil doubled up in S4 Master Stock Moto sponsored by Leading Edge Motorsports. McNeil was at the top of the charts on Saturday throughout qualifying and the two heat races before Jason Campbell stepped up to challenge him in the main event. Campbell took over the top spot on lap two, with McNeil finding himself trailing for the first time on the day. They would run that way until the halfway mark when McNeil returned to the point. Campbell closed back in with two laps remaining and applied the pressure to McNeil. On the final circuit, the two made contact through turn nine and both spun. Campbell kept his engine running and continued on to the checkered flag while McNeil stalled and push-started his ride, crossing the line in second position. A protest was filed and officials ruled that Campbell was to be placed behind McNeil in the final results, putting McNeil on the top of the podium and Campbell on the second step. Finishing third was accomplished kart road racer Lance Lane, making his first sprint track start since the late 1990’s. On Sunday, McNeil swept all four sessions on track, this time with Nick Firestone giving chase. Through the two heat races and the 20-lap main event, Firestone kept it close but was unable to match McNeil’s pace. Last year’s G1 Pro Tour champion Fernando Diaz capped off the weekend scoring the third step in the final.

No class was more dramatic than TaG Master sponsored by MG Tires. Billy Cleavelin was a clear-cut favorite for the main event victories following his performances in qualifying and the heat races. After placing second to David Harwin in Saturday’s qualifying session, Cleavelin won the two heat races in convincing fashion. Cleavelin was well on his way to victory in the main event until lap 13, when his engine began losing power. He would motor on, but not at full power with the fight for second closing. With two to go, Cleavelin was left in the dust as Brian McHattie and Larry Fraser split him down the front straight. McHattie came away with the lead and he powered on to score the victory. Fraser finished second with Jim Russell Jr. advancing up to the podium in third. The same scenario played out on Sunday, this time with Cleavelin scoring the pole position in qualifying and scoring similar wins in the heat races as he did on Saturday. After losing the lead in the opening lap to McHattie to begin the main event, Cleavelin established a comfortable lead once again. About the same time it occurred Saturday, Cleavelin’s engine began to misfire and lose power - ultimately diagnosed as an ignition problem. Once again, Cleavelin would relinquish the lead. At the same time, Harwin was running second when he pulled off track with engine issues, as well. All this action moved the fight for third into a battle for the victory with McHattie, Fraser and defending Pro Tour champion Ethan Wilson. The trio exchanged positions in the final laps before McHattie took the point and put down two strong final laps to claim victory number two as Fraser beat out Wilson for second.

The TaG Junior class sponsored by Italian Motors USA saw two drivers split the main event victories on the weekend. Austin Dement scored the win during Saturday’s action, with Canadian Parker Thompson earning the checkered flag Sunday. Jake Craig edged out Dement for the top spot in qualifying for round one, but Dement struck back with the win in heat one. Craig came back to win heat two with Dement right there. With Bailey Murphy joining the mix for the main event, the trio exchanged the lead a number of times until Craig went deep into turn 10, leaving room for Dement to steal the lead. With a great final lap, Dement scored the victory over Craig and Murphy. Sunday was similar, this time with Dement taking the honors in qualifying, Craig winning heat one and Dement back to the front in heat two. In the main event, Dement was out to a solid lead when his radiator became loose, rubbing the rear tire. Officials black flagged him off track – and that handed the lead to Thompson, who would cruise to a one-second victory to complete his Junior debut weekend. Sonny Cervelli put in a great performance to win the battle for second over Craig.

The front of the S5 Junior Stock Moto sponsored by PureKarting.com was a two-driver affair. Austin Schimmel and Alex Tartaglia – two top returning drivers from last year – led the way throughout the weekend despite a very competitive field. Schimmel struck first, scoring the quick lap in Saturday’s qualifying session with the duo splitting the heat race wins. Tartaglia, however, held the advantage as the day wore on, pushing to a two-second victory over Schimmel – with Luis Tyrrell completing the podium. Schimmel would pick it up on Sunday, sweeping the day’s action with Tartaglia challenging him every session. This time, Micah Hendricks drove a great race to earn his first trip to the Pro Tour podium in third.

TaG Cadet sponsored by Tony Kart West was dominated by defending Pro Tour champion Colton Herta. The second-generation driver scored the main event victory both days, sweeping Sunday’s action. Sting Ray Robb and Davey Manthei, Jr. were able to better Herta’s time in qualifying to begin Saturday’s round one action. Once the wheel-to-wheel action began, Herta jumped to the front and never looked back. After taking the two heat wins, Herta drove to his first victory of the weekend. Robb was able to cut dramatically into his lead but came up short in the end, settling for second ahead of Manthei. On Sunday, Herta never relinquished the top spot from qualifying to the final checkered flag – with a seven-second advantage in the main event. Christian Brooks won the battle for second with another second-generation driver – Flinn Lazier – placing third.

The contenders are set, the bar has been raised, and the excitement has been built up for the 2011 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour. While the increase in numbers for the SpringNationals was a welcomed addition – with plenty of new and returning faces – the projected entries for the second event of the series, the SKUSA SummerNationals, are expected to eclipse those recorded this past weekend. The July 15-17 event set for the Grand Junction Motor Speedway in Colorado is sure to not disappoint.
