Jim Russell TaG Saturday Race #7 Summary – Oct 6, 2007

With a three championships still undecided, Race #7 of the Jim Russell TaG series looked poised to provide some exciting racing in this the Finale of the 2007 season. Despite the great sunny weather, only 47 drivers entered this last race of the year. But all the drivers who had end of year points battles still at strake showed up and put on some very spirited racing, especially in TaG Expert, the last race of the day.

Cambrian Go-Karts TaG Grand Masters
The first race of the day had 5 drivers still battling for point positions. Michael Sherrard, who has the championship locked up in this class, put his kart on the poll followed by Rick Munson. In the Prefinal, Woody Poynter took the lead into turn one at the green flag and drove the wheels off his kart to lead the field after lap one. But as he entered turn one on lap two, oops! Woody spun and his glory for the day was ended, but it was fun to watch. Sherrard took over the lead and cruised to an easy win. In the Main, Sherrard got a bad start and dropped back to fourth with Rick Munson taking the lead. In his attempt to pass Poynter for third, Sherrard spun off and reentered the race in last. After a long chase, Sherrard was able to get back to third, but Munson controlled the race to take his first feature of the year, followed by Jim Zootis who put in his best drive of the year. Sherrard was the class champion, Woody Poynter was 2nd in the final series points, followed by Scott Mortenson, Munson and Zootis.

KLS Racing Junior Puma
8 karts took the green flag with points leader Austin Root needing a good finish to clinch the championship. In Qualify, Andrew Novich took the poll. Novich then went on to winning the Prefinal ahead of Root, Jarrett Lile and Andrew Wolocatiuk. In the Main, Wolocatiuk was the surprise, first getting into third off the start, then passing Austin, then getting to the rear bumper of Novich. For 3 or 4 laps, the two Andrews battled, Wolocatiuk looking first left right then left to get by. After trying 3 outside passes on the main straight, Wolocatiuk dashed to the inside line when entering the straight away and took the inside track position before Novich could move over, the pass was made. Wolocatuik went on to take his first feature win of the year. Novich was 2nd, Root 3rd, Lile 4th and Mitch Young 5th. Austin Root ended the day the class Champion, followed by Lile, Wolocatuik and Ryan Sonntag.

Fastech Racing TaG Heavy
Seven drivers took the green with a championship still to be determined. Cambrian Go-Karts shop owner Donald Durbin controlled the points battle over one of his customers Dean Sanders. Sanders had taken 4 second place finishes in a row and needed a win, and a bad day for his buddy Donald to over take Durbin. Durbin took the poll and looked like he was going to have it easy. But in the Prefinal, Jim Ferguson took the early lead in the race and Durbin had to work hard to over take the tough to pass Ferguson. All this time, Sanders is right behind in third. Durbin finally got by and took the Prefinal win. In the Main, Durbin controlled the race and crusied to the win and the championship. Randy Wetmore had a strong start and got by Ferguson and took 2nd overall with Ferguson 3rd and Sanders having to settle for 4th in the race and 2nd overall in the championship. The most spirited drive though came from a fast improving Steve Elo who finished in 5th.

Junior 1 – Gazelle
With 1st and 2nd places locked up in the championship, Joseph Keaton and Daniel Langon did not run Race #7. This meant that the winner of the popular Gazelle class would be won by a first time winner. In Qualify, Nick Camusi took the pole and took the win in the Prefinal. But on the start of the Main, Colin Daley took the lead into turn one and put the pressure on Nick. Camusi did not take long to take over the front spot with Daley holding 2nd with constant pressure from Maxx Marion. But mid race, others started moving forward. Noah Hermansen started the day slowly with his new chassis, but he figured it out and soon was cutting through the field. By the end, be overtook Daley to take the 2nd place spot. Austin Keller likewise produced a late race push and got by Maxx to take over 4th place. At race end, it was Camusi 1st followed by Hermansen 2nd and his best drive of the year, Daley 3rd, Keller 4th and Marion 5th. For the championship, Joseph Keaton takes the class title, Daniel Langon 2nd, Camusi 3rd, Hermansen 4th, Marion 5th and Daley 6th.

California Kartworld TaG Expert and Fastech Racing TaG Light
What better way to end the race day and the season than to see 17 of Norcals best TaG drivers put on a real show in a combined TaG Expert and TaG Light race. After the win last month with his Rotax powered kart, Wes Phillips was the one everyone was gunning for. In Qualify, Wes proved that he is for real, taking pole over Brett Buckwalter, Nic LeDuc, Craig DiGrazia and Fritz Leesmann. Buckwalter, LeDuc and points leader Larry Fraser also had a battle going on in this race, the championship in the TaG Expert class. Fraser qualified 11th. In the Prefinal, it was Phillips and Buckwalter going head to head, exchanging positions during the initial laps. Leesmann’s race entered in turn one when someone drove up his pipe and knocked it off. Phillips held on for a 3 tenths of a second win over Buckwalter, followed by the top TaG Lights driver, Terre Rothweiler, then Tom Dyer and Greg Liefooghe, driving the only other Rotax in the field. Dyer qualified 14th, thus he made the largest charge in the Prefinal. In the Main, it was Phillips and Buckwalter pulling away, with LeDuc getting turned around in turn one and ending his race, and his shot at the TaG Expert championship. Taylor Robutz also went out with LeDuc, ending his year on a low note, but Taylor still walks away with the TaG Lights championship. There was no end of exciting driving all the way through 10th place during the race. DiGracia started the Main from the 15 position and charged through the field to eventually take 3rd overall just inches behind Buckwalter. Craig’s charge also earned him the fastest lap of the day honors. Finishing 4th was Mark Drennan, the 2006 TaG Lights champion, returning both for the competition and preparation for the Super Nationals. 5th went to Rothweiler, the top TaG Lights driver. 6th through 10 were Tom Dyer, Gregory Liefooghe, Fritz Leesmann, Larry Fraser and Viktor Sinzig. For the win Phillips took home the $300 purse put up by Sierra Race Promotions. Buckwalter locked up the TaG Expert Championship followed by Larry Fraser and Nick LeDuc. The TaG Lights championship went to Taylor Robutz, followed by Terre Rothweiler and Amber Freedberg.

The Championships are all locked up in several of the TaG Series classes, but there are several battles for 2nd through 5th places still to be determined.

The feature class of the day will be the TaG Expert class where 3 drivers are battling for the class championship.  Larry Fraser, Nic LeDuc and Brett Buckwalter all need to have great days to win the championship.  In addition, Wes Phillips and Memo Gidley said they will be back for this race to continue their battle from September where Wes used his Rotax power to win over a strong Parilla field.  Since Taylor Robutz has clinched the TaG Lights championship, he is planning to run the Expert race.  Add in the likes of Jason Toft, Craig DiGrazia, and possibly Colin Katzakian and Chris Scribner, this could be the best TaG Expert field of the year.

$300 Purse to the winner of TaG Expert.  To add some spice to the last TaG Expert race, SRP will put up $300 cash to the winner of the race.

Junior 1-Gazelle should also provide a great race.  Joseph Keaton has locked up the championship, but the field has been getting stronger with each race this year and expect some very good drives from this class.

In TaG Heavy, the championship is also still undecided.  After 4 straight 2nd place finishes, Dean Sanders has a chance to win the class championship, but he has to beat Donald Durbin to do this.  Will this be Dean's race to win a feature, and the championship.

In TaG Grand Masters, Michael Sherrard has the championship locked up, but there is a tight battle behind for the next 4 positions in the standings.

And in both the Gazelle and Puma classes, it will be graduation day for many drivers who will be moving up to the next level class in 2008.  All the graduating drivers will be pointed out during the day on Saturday as they drive in their last Junior 1 or Junior Puma race at Infineon.

In the Final however, Trackmagic's Brett Felkins was able to stay close til the last laps as Alberico went on to give Kartel's third win of the weekend. Felkin's got second, Cambrian's David Vasquez, Kartworlds Donavon Wheeler fourth, and MMI's Wyatt Nilsson fifth.

Sr Superbox had a great turnout with 10 karts. Clayton Snow got another pole. Snow led the heat early but lost a chain giving the win to Bryan Stephenson. Ryan Wakabayashi trailed Bryan in the early laps of the final as Snow made his way form the back. Halfway Snow lost his neck collar ending his day and the battle insued for the victory. Wakabayashi and Stephenson swapped the lead a few times until Wakabayashi took it over for good for the win. Stephenson was second, Timothy Weddle in his first race as senior got third, Chris Gomez and Brett Goerge were the top five.

Formula 80 Masters followed and Boyd ferry made his return to IKF with pole. Ferry looked dominate in the heat with a 3 second victory. In the Final both Steve Dow and Cody McKinney would trail Ferry in the early going. McKinney dropped off and Dow made his move to the lead. He would hold and grab victory by 2 seconds. Ferry was second, John Espinor, Jay Neely, and Mckinney would drive to a fifth.

TAG Jr was next up and David Brant got the pole with 29.534. Just two tenths off the seniors the day before. Brant would lose a side pod in the heat while leading and would start from the back n the final. Kay got the early lead with Bradstock in tow. Bradstock would make several runs at Kay, but wasn't successful. Kay got the win and Bradstock second, Brant third and Chelsi Wagner fourth.

9-27-07 Infineon Shifter Sunday race #6

Race Report:  Jim Russell Shifter Sunday Series Race #6 – September 16, 2007

Another wonderful weather day at the Infineon track, mid 75’s.  Turn out for this event was light with only 43 entries, but this did not take away from the great racing in all the classes on the tough Reverse Track layout.

 ICC/Moto Grand Masters

Michael Sherrard took advantage of the no-show of 3 time race winner Brad Shaffer to pull off the hat trick and take pole, the Prefinal win along with a 6 second margin of victory in the Main.  But the racing behind Sherrard was strong with Tom Fallon recovery from a problem in the Prefinal and taking the second place spot just one second in front of John Coyle, who is starting to get back into good racing shape after a one year layoff from the GM class.  Andrew Fulgham was 4th in the Main, but he was very competitive early on in the Main until a spin put him behind.  Geoff Provo took the 5th place spot and with it continues to lead the points for the class.

Infinity Karting Services 125 Stock Honda Heavy

Only 6 drivers entered the Heavies race this month, a surprise since this is normally largest shifter class of the day.  But this did not take away from the great action.  After taking his first win of the year last month, Mark Drennan took the pole in Qualify from 4 time winner Matt Alcorn.  But in the Prefinal, Matt went into the lead early on and Mark spun in his trying to keep up.  Mark thus finished 6th and would have to charge hard in the Main.  The other 4 drivers battled back and for the whole 10 laps of the Prefinal, providing some great action with rookie Kyle Gimple taking the 2nd place spot in the end.  This was Kyle’s strongest showing this year.  There was less than one second separating the 2nd through 5th spots in the Prefinal.  In the Main, Gimple out dragged Alcorn to turn one and took the initial lead.  But in the left hander after Tic-Tac-Toe, Alcorn made his move to the inside to take the lead.  But he was a bit late on the move, had to lock up the brakes and made contact with Gimple which resulted in Alcorn’s kart on top of Gimple’s steering wheel and a Red Flag had to stop the action.  Gimple was out, Alcorn got a penalty and would finish behind Gimple in the results, and the race restarted.  On the start, Alex Keith and Ken Cornwall battled for the lead with Donald Durbin and Mark Drennan close behind.  Cornwall then spun but restarted to finish 4th.  In the end Drennan used his qualify speed to finally get to the front followed by Durbin, one second back and  Keith 4 seconds back.  Inspite his 6th place finish, Matt Alcorn locked up the championship in this class, but expect him back next month to finish the season on a winning note.

 Cameron Karting ICC/Moto Masters

Like normal, the ICC/Moto Masters race provided the best drama of the day.  Class points leader JP Cadoux again put his ICC kart on the pole ahead of #2 points man Jim Kidd.  Craig Corwin moved over to the Masters class in his preparation for the SuperNationals and took third on the grid ahead of Ron Tamba and Ethan Wilson.

In the Prefianl, Cadoux controlled the race and took a 4 second win over Corwin who took the second spot at the green flag.  The best battle was for third with Jim Kidd leading a very strong Ron Tamba for most of the race, but with 2 laps to go, Tamba found a way by to take the third place spot.  In the Main, the real drama started.  At the green flag, Cadoux took the lead followed by Corwin, Kidd, Tamba and Wilson.  But on lap 10, Corwin slowed went into the pits with problems.  Tamba then got by Kidd to take over third.  Then Cadoux had problems, his shift arm broke and he had to shift reaching down and pushing and pulling on the shift linkage arm, ouch!.  Tamba, Kidd and Wilson all got by Cadoux.  Kidd pressed Tamba all the way but could not find the way by and Ron Tamba came home the winner, taking his first ever ICC Masters feature win.  Jim Kidd took second and tighted up the class points battle with Cadoux, followed by Wilson, Cadoux and Brian Ferrario in the lone Honda in the field.

Fastech Racing Senior 80 and 80 Heavy

The one-two battle between Eddie Veyl and class points leader Robert Porter resumed again this race.  In Qualify, Porter took the pole just ahead of Eddie followed by Nathan Brietling and the first 80 Heavy driver John Espinor.  In the Prefinal, Porter took the early lead but fast Eddie came up to pressure Porter at the end but came up .4 of a second short.  Brietling and Espinor were 3rd and 4th.  In the Main, Porter took the lead ahead of Brietling and Veyl.  It took a couple of laps for Eddie to get by Brietling and by the time he did, Porter had established a comfortable lead.  Brietling spun and fell back thus allowing Espinor to take over third as well as the lead in the Heavy class.  Porter then cruised home with a 5 second victory ahead of Eddie, Espinor 3rd and first in the Heavy class, Ryan Madson 4th and 3rd in the Senior 80 class, with Grant Heatherington 5th and second in the Heavy class.

KLS Racing 125 Stock Honda Light  and  ICC

With only 3 ICC drivers and 4 Honda Light drivers, these two classes were combined for Race #6 and this proved to be very interesting to watch.  Tommie Thompson put his ICC on pole with a 48.171 time followed by Derek Tillett (ICC) with a 48.180, Cody Hodgson (ICC) with a 48.238 and Matt Hauff (Honda Light) with a 48.267.  A very tight field indeed.  At the Green flag, Tillett took the lead early and controlled the race with Hodgson second.  Thompson spun and had to settle for 7th overall.  In the Honda Lights class, Hauff took the early lead and held off points leader and 2006 champion Brad Llyod to take the win.  In the Main, the ICC’s started 3 rows in front of the Hondas allowing Thompson to start right behind Tillett.  Again at the green flag, Tillett took the lead ahead of Hodgson and Thompson with Hauff just behind followed by Lloyd.  The three ICC engined karts but down some real fast laps with all three getting best l;ap times in the 48.4s.  In the end, Tillett did not make any mistakes to take a 1.6 second win over Hodgson who was .3 seconds up on Tommy Thompson.  In the Honda Light class, Hauff and Lloyd battled all race long with both putting in fast laps in the 48.6s, but in the end, Hauff again did not make any mistakes and out dueled Lloyd to take his first shifter feature win.  Joe Hammill put in a very strong race in his Honda Light entry, finishing just 2 tenths of a second behind Lloyd with Steve Libby taking 4th in Honda Lights.  After nearly 2 years of dominating the Honda Lights class, someone finally out dueled Brad Llyod.  But at the end of the day, a second is not too bad for Brad since he locked up the class championship.

 Fastech Racing 80 Grand Masters

Two races ago, the dominant force in the 80 GM class was Bob Lesnett.  Then a guy named Bill James started to go fast.  Last month, James took the pole and Prefinal, but faded to 3rd in the Main.  For Race #6, James took pole again, showing that last month was no fluk. Bob Lesnett had to settle for second on the grid followed by Tom Nelson and Bill Wages.  In the Prefinal, James took the lead right from the green flag and went on to a 1.5 second win over Lesnett with Nelson and Wages another second back.  In the Main, again James took the lead over Lesnett followed by Wages and Nelson after turn one.  But on lap three, Lesnett’s race came to an end when his shifter arm broke and to the pits he went.  Wages took over second ahead of Nelson and these two battled furiously the entire race.  Unlike last month, Bill James was not going to let his fast speed go to waste and he continued on with no mistakes to take a 2 second win.  But with a couple laps remaining, Nelson set up a great pass on the infield portion of the Reverse Sprint layout and got by Wages to take the second spot.  In the end it was James, Nelson, Wages, Roger Cornwall and Steve Peterson.  With Lesnett exiting early and finishing 8th, the points battle has tightened up considerably thus setting up Race #7 as an exciting finale in the 80 GM class.

So, one more race to run in 2007, and very tight battles in the ICC Masters, ICC/Moto GM and 80 Grand Masters classes.  It should be fun to see these battles next month when the track layout will be the modified National track.

9-18-07 Kartel Motorsports Shows well at Stars of Karting West Finale

This past weekend the Stars of Karting held their West Finale at Moran Raceway in Beaumont Ca. Kartel Motorsports went down to compete in the Finale with their Stars JICA driver Brendan Phinny for valuable Championship points. Phinny showed well through the weekend with fast laps and good setups from Erik Bartolero.

Phinny qualified well Saturday placing himself 7th on the starting grid for the PreFinal, but a mechanical failure put him at the tail of the field for the Final. When the Final started Phinny wasted little time working his way past the slower karts, and Brendan Phinny worked his back up to sixth. In the closing laps Phinny attempted to run the rest of the karts but draft played a big factor, as Phinny would settle for the sixth position.

Brendan would bounce back the second day by qualifying in Sixth position. In the PreFinal Phinny would lead some laps but would come fourth for a second row starting position in the Final. Phinny would again lead some laps in the Final. As the race went on, Phinny running second engaged into a battle for the second position with Taylor Miinch. This allowed the leader pull to a big lead. Phinny won the battle for the second position.

While Kartel was competing at Moran for the Stars of Karting West Finale, Kartels president Joey Hand was also busy in his own racing. Hand was competing at Miller Motorsports Park for The American Cup. Joey Hand put in a dominant performance bagging a win.

Brendan would like to thank Grand Products, Swedetech Racing Engines, Baja Cantina, Kartel Motorsports, and Top Kart for his success. Next Brendan Phinny will set to battle for the National Stars title in Las Vegas on a temporary circuit set by Stars of Karting.

Ron Sutton Winner's Circle Launches Annual Driver Search

Talent Search for Driver Career Development – Driver Shoot Out October 19-21

The annual national talent search for the NASCAR focused driver development program conducted by Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle (RSWC) is going on now. RSWC is an established talent scout for NASCAR teams, providing a comprehensive driver and career development program for up and coming drivers focused on NASCAR careers.

The RSWC Race Team Alliance consists of eight organizations with 21 race teams dedicated to develop drivers in the program. The teams are a balance of Open Wheel and Stock Car oval track race teams ... with Road Racing added … to develop complete, versatile drivers for NASCAR Cup Teams.

The winners of the talent shoot out will plug into the training program and racing series that makes sense for the Driver’s age, experience and stage of development. The race series, and race teams, that RSWC utilizes include top West Coast NASCAR team, Bill McAnally Racing and Southern California powerhouse High Point Racing, both running NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars for RSWC drivers ages 17-21.

Championship team, Beebe Racing Enterprises, led by driving champ Eric Holmes, will run two RSWC drivers 18 to 22 years of age, in NASCAR Grand National and SRL Super Late Models. Kaplan-Gennuso Racing fields two USAC Sprint Cars on pavement for RSWC drivers ages 18 to 22, as well as DeBeaumont Motorsports fielding two Midgets in the USAC Midget Series on asphalt ovals for RSWC drivers from 17 to 20 years old.

Ron Sutton’s own team, fields four USAC Ford Focus Midgets in the Western States races for drivers in the 15 to 18 age bracket. National championship team Porter Racing fields a total of four cars in SCCA Formula Fords & F2000 for 16 to 18 year old RSWC drivers. Skip Barber is the chosen series of RSWC to develop young drivers’ road racing skills, with RSWC usually placing two to three drivers in the Skip Barber Formula 2000 cars.

Sutton has said, “We’re not looking for a number … We are looking for young talent that has real potential to go all the way to NASCAR Nextel/Sprint Cup.” With no set target number, eight talented drivers were chosen from last year's test. Day one, of the three day talent test, includes a seminar for Parents and Drivers, "The Real World Good, Bad & Ugly of Driver Career Development" and a training course for Drivers on strategies and terminology. Three separate tests for the young drivers include body fat fitness, a written problem solving test and psychological analysis.

Days two and three, Ron Sutton coaches each driver on driving, with the Drivers getting five 20-lap sessions on track, for 100 laps total to show the judges what they have. Team Owners and Crew Chiefs from the race team alliance are judges at the shoot out. They evaluate the drivers on 45 points, with the biggest areas being coachability, accurate feedback, focus, training retention, motivation, communication skills, personality, aggressiveness, learning rate, confidence and lap times.

Ron expects to receive over 500 resumes, as they have in the past, and narrow it down to approximately 20 drivers to test October 19th through the 21st, at a track in California. If a driver is selected to be a part of the RSWC program, they will be groomed, coached, tested, trained, raced and molded into what NASCAR teams want in their drivers.

Young Drivers ages 12 to 21, and their Parents, are encouraged to get all the information and answers to common questions from the web-site, then submit their resume in time to be considered. The web-site is www.Winners-Circle-Racing.com

9-11-07  The Pro Kart Challenge Experience

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go down to the Pro Kart Challenge 2007 finale at Moran Raceway. I had originally planned to go but as the weekend drew near I had no time and was busy at work, preparing my kart for the Stars of Karting race next weekend, and of course working on the NorcalKarters.com website. Thursday Afternoon my good friend Cliff Kujala from Tony Kart USA informed me that I needed to grab my gear and head down to Moran for some testing, and off I went.

Tom Kutcher has done something different with the Pro kart Challenge (formerly Skusa) in allowing only Seniors to Compete. This has proven to be very successful. 135 entries at the Pro Kart challenge from six classes. The series also ran on a different tire in MG which is Manufactured in Brazil.

Their race setup was a bit different as well as the format ran two Heat races 10 laps each, and one Main which was 20 laps. After the first heat I was badgered by the Women of Pro Kart informing me that I needed to smile. Before I said a word they said, "if you don't smile we have to DQ you!" That brought a smile to my face. It didn't really matter as I was DQ'd at the end of the day anyway due to the fact my motor was only legal on a waiver.

The atmosphere was very laid back. The officials were professional, while matching their attitude with the atmosphere. Even with the heat and just the air of Beaumont, the race was run very impressively. We were done racing at 4 pm and had 40 laps of racing, two sessions of practice, and a 10 minute qualify. For those that don't know, Moran Raceway is just over a mile long. I believe I ran over sixty miles of racing.

Pro Kart also earned two of their racers a 55 thousand dollar scholarship for the Star Mazda series while also offering the whole series factory Invoice on Mazda vehicles. This November Pro Kart will be hosting the Skusa Supernationals in Las Vegas. To learn more about the Pro Kart Challenge Series visit www.prokartchallenge.com

Jim Russell TaG Saturday Race #6 Summary

Despite the 51 entry turnout, the racing was outstanding on the Reverse Track layout.

Cambrian Go-Karts TaG Grand Masters
12 karts started the day with Michael Sherrard taking the pole in Qualify ahead of Scott Mortensen, Rick Munson and Ray Wetmore. In the PreFinal, Sherrard controlled the race and took a 3 second win over Rick Munson followed by Wetmore, Morensen and Woody Poynter. In the main, Wetmore took the lead early and was not going to be denied as he lead the whole way to take the win over Sherrard by less than a half second. Third went to Rick Munson followed by Scott Mortensen and Woody Poynter.

California Kartworld TaG Expert
In a rare appearance, Memo Gidley showed up to have some fun in a TaG kart, and this helped bring out a couple of extra entries to add to the Expert race. 3 Rotax engine karts also showed up lead by Wes Phillips. Wes won the Expert race a couple of years ago on the Reverse configuration, the track layout that he feels is best suited to the Rotax power. In Qualify, Phillips took the pole ahead of Gidley and Nic LeDuc. At the start of the PreFinal, the outside row drivers had to take to the dirt due to a fast start and this put Gidley and Buckwalter back into the field. Phillips lead Larry Fraser to win the PreFinal by 3 seconds with Gidley and Buckwalter working their way back up the standings to take 3rd and 4th by the end with LeDuc in 5th. In the Main, Fraser got the jump on Phillips and lead the first lap, but Phillips went to the front by outbraking Fraser into the top of the hill turn and was never challenged after that. Buckwalter broke on lap 4 while in 4th place. Gidley worked over Fraser hard during the early part of the race and was able to get by into second. LeDuc then worked hard to also get by Fraser to eventually take the 3rd spot with Fraser finishing 4th and Troy Castaneda took the final trophy spot in 5th.

Junior 1 – Gazelle
Another strong turn out of 11 karts in the Gazelle class. In Qualify, it was Joseph Keaton taking his 6th straight pole followed by strong performances from Noah Hermansen and Austin Keller. In the PreFinal, last months winner, Daniel Langon had to start last due to a soccer game he had to play in during the morning. Keaton took the win in the PreFianl followed by Hermansen, Keller and Josh Feiber. Langon had a problem on the start and had to play catch up so he only made up 3 spots and finished 8th. In the Main, Keaton took his normal place in the lead and went on to an 8 second win. But the focus was on Langon who had to work his way through the field. Hermansen and Keller both continued to perform well showing that their Qualify and PreFinal performances were no fluuks. In the end, Keaton took the win followed by Langon who completed the best charge of the day. 3rd went to Hermansen, folowed by Keller and Josh Feiber. This was the best performances of the year by both Hermansen and Keller proving that practice does make one go faster.

Fastech Racing TaG Light
The Lights race turned into a great race with some strong performances by the top 4 drivers. Terre Rothweiler took the pole over 4 time winner Taylor Robutz. Ray Trimble and Jaime Faulkner were 3rd and 4th, both putting in strong showings. Class contender Marc Green qualifed 5th, put his engine broke during the session and he was not able to make one lap in the PreFinal or Main and thus had to take a DNS and no points. In the PreFinal, Robutz took the lead early in the race and went on to a half second win over Rothweiler, followed by Trimble, Faulkner and Jon Mullins. In the Main, Robutz took the early lead but was hounded by Rothweiler lap after lap until Terre be was able to outbrake Taylor in the left hander after tic-tac-toe (or is it toe-tac-tic when running in the reverse direction). Terre went on to take a 1.5 second win, his first at Infineon in a couple of years. By taking second, Robutz clinches the championship in the Lights class. But there was still more action behind the top two. Trimble took 3rd for the first half of the race. Faulkner dropped a wheel and had to fall back. Amber Friedberg and Jon Mullins ran in a tight group with Trimble for most of the race with Mullins working his way past Trimble to take the 3rd place spot. Trimble finished 4th with Friedberg 5th. A great day for the top 4 drivers, best finishes of the year for Rothweiler, Mullins and Trimble, and locking up the Championship for Robutz.

KLS Racing Junior Puma
For only a 6 kart field, the Junior Puma was the most action packed Main events of the race day. Andrew Novich continued where he left off last month, fast and smooth. He took the pole ahead of two time winners Jordan Jadallah and Austin Root. In the PreFinal, the results were the same as qualify, Novich taking a very narrow win over Jadallah with Root third. But the fun started right from the green flag in the Main. Jadallah took the early lead with Novich right on his heals, but Jordan was having some carb problems and was on the needles early searching for some top end power. Eventually Austin Root got by both Novich and Jadallah to take the lead on lap 4. Jadallah held off Novich for several laps but just when it looked like Novich was going to get a run up the hill after tic-tac-toe, he hit Jadallah in the rear and spun out. Jadallah continued on with little effect, but now Jarrett Lile started reeling in Jordan. Jadallah and Lile traded positions for a couple of laps before Jarrett made a pass that stuck and he was able to get clear Jadallah. Then it was Ryan Sonntag’s turn to put pressure on Jadallah. This was Ryan’s best race of the year and he would like nothing better than to get into 3rd. But at the checkered flag, it was Austin Root taking his third win of the year followed by Lile, Jadallah, Sonntag, Andrew Novich and Andrew Wolocatiuk.

Fastech Racing TaG Heavy
Only six drivers took the green flag and at one time only 3 karts were running in the PreFinal, But in the end there was a good race that had lots of drama. Donald Durbin took the pole ahead of his customer Dean Sanders followed by Tim Cleland and Randy Wetmore. In the PreFinal, Dean Sanders took the lead at the green flag and went on to a narrow win over Durbin. In the mean time, Randy Wetmore pulled off on the first lap followed by Tim Cleland, then Steve Elo throw a chain to add to the DNF list. In the Main, all six karts were back to take the green and all finished the race. Dean Sanders took the lead from the start with Durbin right on his heals. Cleland and Wetmore got into 3rd and 4th, but were a ways back of the front duo. Then Cleland started reeling in the two front karts. As Cleland got closer, Durbin had no alternative but to put pressure on one of his customers and make the pass to assure a Cambrian win. Durbin made the pass, but now it was Sanders who had to hold off the hard charging Cleland. Tim pressed as hard as he could, but he never was able to get by, thus assuring Sanders yet another 2nd place finish, his 4th in a row. This was Dean’s best effort in which to get his first feature win, but it was not in the cards on this day. Randy Wetmore came in 4th just ahead of Steve Elo and Steve Landreville.

Another great weather day complete at the great Infineon track. The last race of the year will run on October 6th on the modified National track.

Despite the 51 entry turnout, the racing was outstanding on the Reverse Track layout.

9-4-07 NorcalKarters.com Introduces 2007 Region 11 Driver Rankings

As the season comes to a close, many drivers throughout the Region 11 area are focusing on the seasons championships. Throughout the clubs and the IKF regional series many drivers are battling in tight points battles whether its for the overall championship or top positions in the points.

To acknowledge the outstanding accomplishments and potential that many drivers have proven through the season, NorcalKarters.com has developed Driver rankings for five ranks. The ranks will acknowledge the populating Kid Kart ranks, Jr 1 division, Jr 2 division, Senior and Master ranks. The calculating of points will be done from an average finish among races through the club and regional events. The process to develop precise calculated points will be done as follows.

Drivers will receive points for their finishing positions. Each driver every race will receive the number of their finishing position (first will receive 1 point, second will get 2 points, third will receive 3 points etc...). The total amount of points will be added together, then divided by the number of races the driver has raced. Lowest number of points will have earned the best average finish. The winners will be announced at the 2007 IKF  Championship banquet.

To be eligible for the driver rankings the driver must have competed in atleast one IKF regional event. With two races remaining many drivers will have the chance to get their name recorded in the 2007 driver rankings. To speed up the process of calculating the points, feel free to send your name, division, and regional and clubs in which you have raced to info@norcalkarters.com.
